aristofun··on I'm 60 years old. Claude Code killed a passion
> I have always enjoyed the journey

Don't take it personally, but those are the worst kind of engineers in any real world business context. I watched those type of people ruining projects, companies by overengineering them to death.

On the bright side, such traits can make a positive impact in academic or research context.

aristofun··on Toolpack SDK, an Open Source TypeScript SDK for Building AI-Powered Applications
what are main competitors and key advantages over them ?

How can I know it’s not gonna be abandoned in a year?

aristofun··on Tell HN: Vertical tabs has arrived (behind a flag) in Chrome stable
Wow. Finally someone in the corporation of good paid some attention to mere users’ problems. Really wow.

I hope it’s not the fluke and the person is not going to be laid off for lack of “impact”.

If that person(s) is reading this - god bless you and may everything good in life be with you!

aristofun··on New farm bill would condemn pigs to a lifetime in gestation crates
> they don't have the concept

And yet those people claim they have the concept of suffering (not physical pain).

Don’t you see inconsistency here?

aristofun··on New farm bill would condemn pigs to a lifetime in gestation crates
How it can be more miserable than it already is - being animal slave from birth to guaranteed death (don’t tell me animals can’t feel it from adjacent room/building)?
aristofun··on New farm bill would condemn pigs to a lifetime in gestation crates
I can understand and respect no meat people’s position (vegans etc), because it is consistent. Even if I disagree generally.

But how can I comprehend people who eat meat and okay with killing animals, but get outraged by so and so practices of growing them? Isn’t it a textbook definition of inconsistency and hypocrisy?

aristofun··on Tell HN: I'm 60 years old. Claude Code has re-ignited a passion
Based on your comment you’re probably not a very good principal engineer ;)

Hence, you are back in the group of those who should benefit from LLMs. Following your own logic :)

Ps: please don’t take it seriously

aristofun··on Cancel ChatGPT AI boycott surges after OpenAI pentagon military deal
> The crowd is right a HUGE majority of the time

Even if that's the case, how do you know it's right this particular time?

Also, one can say, crowd huge majority of time makes mediocre decisions at best. Or: crowd can be easily manipulated with intentional propaganda.

We can do all sorts of generalizations that would be generally true. But I got your point, thank you.

Politics with a sprinkles of hypocrisy, got it.
aristofun··on Cancel ChatGPT AI boycott surges after OpenAI pentagon military deal
Genuine question - what’s wrong with military leveraging modern technologies? They have been doing it for ages. And thanks to this process for example we have now internet.

Or what’s inherently wrong with catering to military customer?

What’s going on here?

aristofun··on Nobody gets promoted for simplicity
That is very true. For whatever reasons - the bigger the company, the more unjustified complexity it cripples itself with without being aware about it.

Also survivorship bias is a very real thing (problem prevented is ignored, while problem solved is appreciated regardless of who and why caused it).

aristofun··on I lost my ability to learn anything new because of AI and I need your opinions
Ive lost my ability to do basic and advanced arithmetic calculations or algebraic calculations in school.

That didn’t stop me from getting a phd.

If you think it’s all there’s to programming that llm spits out, then the problem is in you somewhere, not in llms.

aristofun··on Israel Is Attacking Iran
When insane immoral peole get guns roaming on streets cops put them to jail, kill, or lock in assylum.

Why it should be any different on government scale?

Whether current iran government qualifies as insane lunatics it is a different argument.

But within the given context it’s the only right thing to do unfortunately.

aristofun··on A Nationwide Book Ban Bill Has Been Introduced in the House of Representatives
Finally, some politicians had some sense.

Unfortunately, some of them is going to abuse that.

But that what politics is - only trade-offs, no perfect decisions. Only brain ded radicals of all sides think there are simple solutions.

aristofun··on 36yo: Career at home vs. Simple life abroad?
Because as a foreigner you start from scratch, no social network, no connections, no understanding of culture, mentality etc. You know, basic stuff, obviously.
aristofun··on 36yo: Career at home vs. Simple life abroad?
It’s wiser to invest in independence of any external circumstances. To get some valuable skill, for example. To be flexible enough to relocate.

Also you don’t go to another country for a “better living standards”.

You go there to get out of your comfort zone, to grind, to prove yourself, to learn etc. unless you’re already rich you’re going to struggle in one way or another for a while. Only your kids born there will be able truly and fully enjoy all the “standards”. That’s the brutal truth.

aristofun··on Ask HN: Who has seen productivity increases from AI
I didn’t understand half of your comment and guess what - I don’t care.

As long as it is not a privacy sensitive, high stakes or human factor related matter, I choose LLM any time of day.

All the bullshit lawyers made up to protect their own job I deeply can not care less about.

aristofun··on What podcasts are you listening to?
Podcasts are mostly a time waste by design. Id rather focus on what Im doing or get high quality content like books if I have time.
aristofun··on Ask HN: Who has seen productivity increases from AI
I got same results in few minutes and cents that I got from a lawyer in few days and thousand dollars.
aristofun··on 1Password pricing increasing up to 33% in March
Fortunately 1P6 with one time purchase still works. I don't care about this company since then.
aristofun··on Would you choose the Microsoft stack today if starting greenfield?
The only good thing left of microsoft is Typescript language. That’s it.
aristofun··on Ask HN: How do you overcome imposter syndrome?
You just do what you are supposed to do, learn, grow.

There’s nothing you can or should explicitly do about imposter syndrome feeling per se.

But what you describe doesn’t sound like this. So it’s a good move to first identify the problem correctly with help of others.

aristofun··on Tell HN: We analyzed our dev time.80% is still infrastructure'setup',notfeatures
Unfortunately only Ruby on Rails world seems to systematically care about devx and infra friction. Others just got used to throwing more money and people on it.
aristofun··on Ask HN: Is AI the final nail in the coffin for solo developers?
> unless you are good at marketing.

Sorry to (not)disappoint, but it was _always_ like this.

If you analyze closely, every single solopreneurial success is based first and foremost on a successful marketing/sales. Whether by luck, hard work or being in the right place at the right time. The dev part and the product is never a main dish.

aristofun··on A Programmer's Loss of Identity
> They tend to want small, efficient code that is easy to understand and debu

In my experience it’s quite opposite. Majority of both hobbyists and professionals have strong tendency to engineer as the main mode and a goal of itself vs shipping the value.

aristofun··on A Programmer's Loss of Identity
> This seems like an analogy in bad faith. How would plumbing as a hobby even make sense?

Exactly!

> Compare to jobs like writers, scientists, carpenters, mechanics, etc that are much closer to programmers in spirit and do have a lot of people doing them in their free time.

This is your bias of equating programming to an art form. And that's the core of the problem.
