arihant··on Google's new logos are bad
These icons are obviously designed for mobile apps, and they look fine on app icons. But they are plain awful on the pinned tabs. I'm not sure if only a small percentage of GSuite customers were using web apps for them to justify this.

Maybe they could have color coded these icons like Microsoft did for each product. I do like the shapes, I'm just having a hard time distinguishing them. So maybe they should have stuck with 100% red for mail and 100% green for google meet, and so on, with the new shapes. Or at least let the old color for the product be the dominant color of the icon.

arihant··on They're deleting my channel, but they don't know why? [video]
So I ventured into indie music production during lockdown and here's the thing -- covers are a notoriously vague area when it comes to copyright and licensing. It is easy and cheap ($10-15) to get a cover license. You are required to give out royalties. Most covers published on YouTube just end up losing monetization.

But, and here is where it gets weird, what defines cover is extremely limiting. For covers, the song must follow the exact general tone and pattern of the original. Anything else is considered derivative work and an infringement, even if the license was bought. So if a guitarist adds a simple vocal explaining how he played it -- it is not a cover. It's infringement.

Also, under DMCA, covers are not fair use. I also expect lesser music companies letting YouTube videos slide as we now have YT Music and these covers directly compete with the original. So they might just not be comfortable with getting your money, they also don't want a cover beating the original in playlists and charts.

arihant··on Getting Users Is Hard
This micro version of clique-only Facebook events is not bad. If someone builds a usable version of this that will eat into a significant portion of WhatsApp groups.

I believe if your app can just record my video, then transcribe my audio to figure out details of my plan (location, time, etc.) and then post an Instagram story with my video plus metadata in an elegant way with a poll widget, that is something I would use today.

Maybe later in product lifecycle you can add more useful features within your app. But I'd definitely start out by latching on to an existing social network.

arihant··on Facebook executives shut down efforts to make the site less divisive
Pay for Facebook then. 1.5% of total YouTube users subscribe for YT Premium. I love how the smartest minds will ignore the most primitive economics. Ads work. For everyone. Except deluded.
arihant··on Siri, What Time Is It in London?
I grew up in Lucknow, India (a tier 2 city with around 3MM people at the time) and had multiple assistants think I meant Lucknow, Ontario — a town with population of a 1000 people.
arihant··on India coronavirus: The 'mystery' of low Covid-19 death rates
This should not be a mystery at all. India locked down entire country (no state rights in Epidemics laws), despite federal structure. Very few things can be bought, even Amazon is only delivering "essentials."

But more importantly, India has been contact tracing like a greedy algorithm on steroids since case #1. There was a positive case in a condo nearby mine. The entire condominium building and adjacent locality is sealed. Not a lockdown, sealed. Nobody in, nobody out. The authorities spent over 9 hours interviewing all family members, neighbors, and friends of the infected for contact tracing. Every contact is being monitored, with police showing up randomly to make sure of no symptoms and adherence to home quarantine.

People are self policing mainly to avoid police, but they are self policing each other because nobody wants their buildings sealed. It really is working, I see people unwilling to hand over their credit cards in shops insisting to tap to avoid infections. In my state, there are only 85 active infections, only 2 are residents of my city, and even then I'm given gloves and sanitizer when I enter minimarts, with only 10 minute allowance to go and shop with maximum 4 shoppers allowed inside.

Edit: It becomes a big news when a positive case is found nearby. There is a distributed effort of volunteers to monitor infections (http://covid19india.org). There is no way government can lie about numbers.

arihant··on Huawei P30 Pro camera review
This company is facing trouble worldwide because of their likely involvement with Chinese spying. I don’t think this will find any takers among people who are privacy conscious.
arihant··on Apple introduces 8-core MacBook Pro
Honestly, with the new Pro laptops having so much issues, my next Mac setup will be an iMac with an Air. After using the 2018 model, I have a different level of respect for my 2015.

So much double typing on 2018, who designed that keyboard? It is not even a Pro laptop for authors anymore, who arguably need the least computing power.

arihant··on Apple iPhone SE Available on Apple Store Again
I have a 2015 with screengate issue. Basically the anti glare peeling off with regular use. Solved by removing the whole coating with Clorex cause can’t give in the laptop for 5 days.

Dangers of living on the edge.

arihant··on Apple iPhone SE Available on Apple Store Again
This is true. I bought the X in India but with assumption that I’ll use it for at least 3 years. Maybe more. This doesn’t sound hard to achieve given how long Apple continues to provide upgrades.
arihant··on Tell HN: Google removing Gmail access from IFTTT
I'm not sure how much user security will come out of the new Gmail policies. A lot of companies will just start asking for username/password for IMAP access. Now the user is more vulnerable than if the developer was allowed OAuth access. Unless they plan to break that somehow as well.
arihant··on Ask HN: Do you enjoy working in a coworking space?
Because coworking spaces are full of employees of other companies, while working cafes are usually solo people working in super focussed fashion. There's no foosball table. No startup kool-aid. It's the same with private members clubs. Usually it is the founders, investors, lawyers, reasonably successful people in whatever field they work in. The networking opportunity is immense, and it's usually a better atmosphere.

I'm sure a coworking space could maybe screen their candidates and employ a deep work culture. But so far they are focussed on free coffee, big TVs with Playstations, beer on tap and ping pong tables.

arihant··on Ask HN: Do you enjoy working in a coworking space?
I dislike coworking spaces. For a solo developer, they offer a lot of distraction. You're stuck in one place which defeats the purpose of getting out of the house for inspiration. For a team, it becomes very hard to create company culture. It feels like you're an empire without a fortress. I'd rent an apartment over a coworking any day for the team.

What I now tend to prefer are other cafes frequented by other designers and developers, or new private member clubs. These clubs offer a lot of stimulus for freelancers and you're surrounded by people of various different fields, which sparks interesting discussions.

arihant··on Tracking Blood Sugar
It is absurd that two (not one) doctor's scripts are needed to buy a sugar testing device. I've been trying to get this for my mother but it has been an awful experience in terms of their willingness to sell. I wish a company that actually wants to make money would soon offer an alternative.

They are opaque on pricing, do not answer questions about where to buy, do not clearly state what kind of prescription they need.

arihant··on Tell HN: I Hugely Regret Using Stripe Atlas
If you're in the US, you can just walk into a bank of your choice and open a account. Stripe doesn't care what you do with your SVB account. Just replace it with your new account number in Stripe payment settings and you're done. This is not an endorsement, but I've been hearing good things about First Republic Bank.

If you're not in the US, let me first point out that Azlo doesn't even support international transfers. They do not have login system for multiple founders. I'm very sure they don't work with ITIN and require SSN to open an account. Also, only one debit card. No checkbooks.

It appears that you somehow expect every step of the process to be smooth as butter. But nothing about running a startup will be like that. Transferring subscriptions from one Stripe account to another should be the least of your problems when porting an existing business with transactions to a c-corp. Talk to a lawyer and an accountant to understand what you got yourself into. Since you're trying to migrate transactions before the incorporation into the company account, you should talk to them earliest you can.

arihant··on Amazon DynamoDB On Demand
This would be beneficial for companies who have not yet figured out the math like you have. Also for companies who have 5-6X spikes in a non predictable fashion. Also, even for predictable spikes, there is a non-trivial lag for autoscaling.

Probably also useful for multi-tenant apps like web analytics. One cannot possibly predict the workload.

arihant··on Dear Spotify, please let me unlink my Facebook account
It's not reasonable at all. You're 1 instance of bad luck away from death. But that's hardly a reason to not leave home.
arihant··on How the founders of Brex built a billion-dollar business in less than 2 years
Different markets and products. Pleo is not in US yet. Pleo does not underwrite. Pleo requires balance in account for cards to work, hence it is a prepaid solution. Brex actually underwrites and works like usual corporate cards do.
arihant··on WhatsApp Cofounder Brian Acton on Why He Left $850M Behind
If they are occasional, standard international calls aren't that expensive anymore. Telegram has voice calls too, fwiw.
arihant··on Ask HN: Best alternative to Gmail?
For personal mail, Zoho is hard to beat. Free up to 5GB and $36/year for up to 30GB. They also communicate very well about any downtimes, disruption, which is extremely rare. Also, there is real customer support. I've accidentally deleted spam messages and they recovered it within hours after shooting one email.
arihant··on Qwant – An alternative to Google
But Google does. The first link on Google explains what they are.
arihant··on Qwant – An alternative to Google
Very primitive. Does not work with most high frequency n-grams, and I tried a bunch from the top 5K. "Best hacker fare website" does not highlight "fares" in titles, "hacker fare" is not detected as a phase, so I get basically gibberish.
arihant··on Apple's best product is now privacy
Two things:

1. There's really no space for it, if you look at teardowns. So something took its place.

2. It does give better water resistance. Google the water resistance tests between iPhones and others. The difference is night and day in real world performance.

arihant··on Google wants websites to adopt AMP as the default for building webpages
And quiet opposites as well. Baidu and Microsoft are major investors in Cloudflare. But this list has to grow, by a lot.
arihant··on India court legalises gay sex in landmark ruling
It’s a colonial era law that made LGBT “unnatural” in the country of Kamasutra. One of the many gifts the British left behind. Great we finally overcame it. Although we should have fixed it sooner.
arihant··on Apple Music now has 38M paid members
Amazon Prime Music is pretty good too, and is free with Prime membership, which is 3/4 the price you pay for Apple Music alone. I also liked Wynk app in India.

The only reason I'm not jumping ship to Amazon's offering is Apple's tight integration with my watch and Apple TV. This will only get stronger with HomePod.

arihant··on Since 1700, Wine Glasses Have Gotten 7 Times Bigger
This is quiet meaningless, almost an Onion article. Nobody serves a 449ml wine pour. Just because the glasses have gone larger, does not mean the serving size has too. The photo that says it was probably 14 servings back in the day, the glass is not even filled to a third of its capacity.
arihant··on Skype Vanishes from App Stores in China, Including Apple’s
This has nothing to do with centralisation. Every (even decentralised) shops need to comply with local laws. You can debate the laws, but not the compliance of shops. It's the same reason you can't just buy weed from 7-Eleven.

If you care to read the article, Microsoft says they are working with the government and the app will soon get reinstated.

arihant··on Ask HN: We didn't get a single person to pay for our SAAS – what could be wrong?
It seems to require my LinkedIn profile mandatorily. Don’t have one. Also, not putting my credit card in a Typeform.

Not a freelancer, but maybe this will help in some way. I’ve never signed up for a service asking for compulsory links to other social websites. Why not just put a sign in with LinkedIn button and take credit card using stripe pop up later?

arihant··on Radar reveals two moons orbiting asteroid Florence
If we go grab a moon sized ball of gold, gold will lose most of its value. It'll be the next Aluminium.
