argc··on Japan maglev train breaks world speed record again
I've had to take my shoes off in many places in Europe and Asia. It's definitely not just a "US" thing.
argc··on French Senate Backs Bid To Force Google To Disclose Search Algorithm Workings
I think they would be better off taking all they money they would potentially spend on this stupid and putting it up as prize money for a French startup to create a viable Google competitor--encouraging them to view search in a new way. In the very least, it would be a positive message rather than a negative one and maybe an interesting company would come of it. I don't think this will have anything but a negative effect on Google (which does not mean there will magically be a french competitor to jump in a take its place). It also makes the French government look really dumb...
argc··on Elon Musk: Tesla cars will have “autopilot mode” by summer
If you think Musk hasn't done anything then you haven't been paying attention.
argc··on Petition Against Felony Charge for WiFi Prank
Good question. Who calls the FBI over something like that? Granted, I haven't heard his side of the story, but with the information I have now I don't ever want to be friends with Brian.
argc··on Dropwizard 0.8.0: Java framework for ops-friendly, high-performance web services
This looks really cool, thanks for sharing!
argc··on The shipping network that keeps the world running
I have such a sense of awe when looking at pictures of container ships. This article sums it up pretty well. Capitalism certainly has its downsides, but results in some pretty amazing things. Then again, the same could be said about totalitarianism. I guess you could generalize it to: modern powerful entities can do amazing things.
argc··on Yahoo Homepage – Now Featuring Extra-Scammy Scams
This makes me want to puke. Nice one, Yahoo.... makes you look GREAT.
argc··on HealthCare.gov Sends Personal Data to Dozens of Tracking Websites
I agree. On the surface, this looks ridiculous and I am very surprised. Hopefully there is a good explanation... but pregnancy status as a query parameter? I don't understand what that could be other than data mining.
argc··on Stack Exchange Raises $40M Led by A16Z to Boost Its Programmer Forums
Yeah I feel that they are overzealous in closing useful (to me) questions, but its hard to know what the site would be like if they let discussions go--perhaps it would make it a lot more difficult to find the answer you're looking for.
argc··on Stack Exchange Raises $40M Led by A16Z to Boost Its Programmer Forums
Doesn't surprise me considering how much I use Stack Overflow. I also have a lot of respect for Joel--I don't actually know much about him but from his blog posts he seems like a very decent guy.
argc··on Backstabbr: A modern web interface for the classic board game Diplomacy
I'm curious what languages/frameworks/platforms were used to create Backstabbr
argc··on Stalin: a global optimizing compiler for Scheme
Can't we just maintain our sense of humor about things like this and move on? The project is old, the dictator is dead... And its not like naming a project after Stalin is "endorsing" him. It's merely personifying the potentially boring nature of program by calling it "brutal" and "aggressive".

Now I have to think about whether I would be ok with other potentially offensive names... Boko Haram, the packet capturing tool. It even has the 'Islamic State' functionality that removes HTTP headers from their respective packet bodies. Hmm..

argc··on Please.js – Random Pleasing Colors
I like the colors it generated for me very much... But it should also have the ability to generate ugly colors. It's just not fair to favor the pleasing colors so heavily.
argc··on Show HN: Freeciv, HTML5 open source version
Pretty cool, but unplayable unless I was doing something wrong. I couldn't move the minimap unless I was careful where to click (dragging doesn't work) and everytime I tried to select a unit everything disappeared. Looking forward to playing when it works a little better!
argc··on Q&A With Mt. Gox’s Karpelès: What Went Wrong?
Seems likely, any references that support your theory? Many people on /r/bitcoin and such places seemed to think that he outright stole it, but could be pure speculation (I didn't follow the story, don't take my word for it).
argc··on Poll: Do you believe intelligence is fixed?
I think the most likely possibility is that it is fixed to some extant - i.e. your genetics give you a baseline. Then, of course, your environment effects how much you grow above your baseline.
argc··on Eigenmorality
Perhaps you have studied morality simulations in the past, whereas I have not. It was written simply. (In my opinion the occasional wordiness was a stylistic choice to mimic casual conversation rather than a strictly rigorous academic paper.. fitting for a blog post.) I found it a though-provoking read, and I have no qualms if his ideas were not "novel". Digesting old ideas and writing about them is not a crime. If anything, it is beneficial to those who did not read the original work (like me). As you said... to each his own.
argc··on The Board Game of the Alpha Nerds
But don't you miss the face to face interaction? Watching everything play out...
argc··on The Board Game of the Alpha Nerds
Seriously? Why do people take it so seriously...
argc··on The Board Game of the Alpha Nerds
I am always looking for people to play Diplomacy and none of my friends are interested. I think I need new friends.
argc··on The SSD Endurance Experiment: Casualties on the way to a petabyte
Samsung 840 Pro vs Corsair Neutron GTX? They both did well.. which would you buy?
argc··on Tailspotting: Identifying and profiting from CEO vacation trips
How do enthusiasts track the planes over the ocean? I saw a plane on flightradar24 that looked like it was 360mi+ away from the coast. (It was yellow, meaning ADS-B data.)
argc··on How do you make programming fun again?
Start with a healthy diet before you start taking vitamins. They are probably not necessary, unless you are already eating a perfectly healthy diet (which I doubt). I suppose it could be helpful if you refuse to eat healthier...

I completely agree with you on the sleep aspect. Sleep does wonders for concentration, creativity... I would also recommend a standing desk.

argc··on Brazilians welcome genetically-modified mosquito to help fight dengue fever
I am not afraid of GM stuff, but does anyone else think this idea is potentially really dumb? What about everything that relies on these mosquitoes as a food source? I am not an expert... but trying to just kill off an entire species sounds like a TERRIBLE idea...
argc··on How the backpropagation algorithm works
Or "Why I wish I was better at math."
argc··on Etcd – The Road to 1.0
Is there any benefit to using coreOS when you don't need a million machines? How much work is it to start with, for example, if you have no idea what your scaling needs will be in the future?
argc··on Use after free bug in OpenSSL
This is true. I would trust it more if a company with a lot of cash backed it (google, apple..) of course, leaving it open source. We don't want anything sneaky going on.

They might already make a lot of contributions that I don't know about.

argc··on Homeless Lose a Longtime Last Resort: Living in a Car
While I agree with you, I think it is also a matter of what the police force spends its resources on. There are so many stupid laws that could be enforced, but probably shouldn't. I'd rather the officers ignore the homeless for the most part and spend their efforts responding to 'real crime'. But yes... this definitely could be abused by any one corrupt officer.
argc··on We Built a Hacker News for Biotech
Well yes, but there is actually a huge intersection with computer science - bioinformatics. Since bioinformatics only requires data, which is much easier to get, and programming/statistics/data mining skills, the barrier to entry is lower than wet lab work. (When I say much easier to get, I'm talking about publicly available data, not creating your own data.)
argc··on The Newsweek Credibility Matrix
You're too smart for your own good. Prepare for extermination.
