Oh this very nice, thanks for the heads up on this!
ardme··on Fed should pay every American, let hedge funds and billionaires ‘get wiped out’
He made the same mistake on the "Pomp" podcast the other day too. He was saying we send 50k to every person in the USA for the stimulus.

Well, no. 2 trillion divided by by 327 million is $6,116 dollars. So yeah maybe we should divide the 2 trillion up between the people but he got a decimal point wrong.

Personally it seems more effective to send most of the money to hospitals and medical organizations because people wouldn't necessarily be able to use stimulus money for anything now anyway.

Seems like it makes sense to prop up businesses since you can't build a business overnight and most people would not be able to start one easily.

I like some of his arguments but basically give them any real thought and this guy is just trying to get attention by saying shocking things.

Interesting to see, I am curious how this goes especially with the pricing model. Have you been doing this very long?

I would want to see a docs page and a React, Vue, Angular etc client library before I would realistically purchase this and spend time trying to consume it.

ardme··on Ask HN: I don't want to be a worker any more I want to be a professional
Haha, I think that might have been this article I wrote which briefly graced the front page a few months ago.

I collected all of the emails where recruiters started off with "I'm Impressed...". https://www.iteachrecruiters.com/blog/when-everyone-started-...

ardme··on Reviving a 19 Year Old Test to See If an Employer Is Worth Working For
Yeah, I can expand on that. What I meant is that when I have been on teams that are basically just writing services that we are exposing via an API, it has been sufficient to just have really great test coverage and monitoring.

When I have been on teams that are doing a whole vertical as part of a product that includes UI work, it has generally been nicer to have real dedicated testers on the team.

So because I think you can't really generally say what is going to be enough, I think you just need to ask people about their process and decide based on what the project is.

ardme··on When everyone suddenly started using “impressed” as an opener
The issue is that it is doing the opposite of what they want because everyone started doing it.
ardme··on When everyone suddenly started using “impressed” as an opener
Hey man, I'm sorry you feel that way. Yeah it's a sales pitch, but it is aimed at recruiters so please just ignore it. I figured this would be interesting to devs because it was interesting to me that all of these recruiters started using the same opening line on me like they all read it as advice somewhere.
ardme··on What are the most indispensable books for indie hackers?
Indie hackers is well known and these guys are legit they don't put out affiliates spam.
ardme··on Ask HN: How can I learn how to paint?
My SO went to RISD, is an excellent painter technically and that is what she does for a living. From what she has said the first year or two of art school was just a huge grind of doing lots of drawings 8-12 hours a day, ect trying to get as photo-realistically perfect as possible. Lot of drawing people ect. Then there are different styles of painting she would focus specifically on a given style and practice it. But she always starts with a sketch, then under layers, so drawing comes first.

She practices drawing all of the time. She goes to live figure drawing at the local art school every week. Basically what I am saying is that from what I understand to get to a high level of technical skill painting, you start with a high level of technical skill drawing. There may be other ways, but this seems to be the typical path.

ardme··on Seattle now decade’s fastest-growing big city in the U.S.
I disagree with this in spirit. The rustbelt is not losing population but it is stagnating compared to rest of the nation. I'm from Ohio and I noticed something startling looking at population stats - before 1970 population was increasing at double digit rates many decades. After 1970, very low single digits (some decades less than 1% growth). In 1970 the population was 10,652,017, while in 2017 it is estimated at only 11,658,609. The population is barely replacing itself.

If you look at other rust belt states you will see a similar trend, and I believe it is due to people moving away looking for work, starting in the 70s. The decline of the auto and manufacturing industries here is likely to blame. The same trends generally apply for Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky and Indiana. In Pennsylvania the trend started much earlier which maybe follows the steel industry decline. Anecdotally much more than half of the people I keep in contact with from high school and college in Ohio have moved away, myself included.

ardme··on Berkshire Hathaway 2017 Annual Letter [pdf]
Honestly it is just a little bit disappointing that Buffett spent so much time discussing his bet with Protege Partners and no mention of his IBM exit and some of his other holdings such as Apple, the various Airlines and Kraft-Heinz. I did find the insurance discussion interesting, however.
ardme··on You’re working in the wrong place if you’re working in an open office
It's OK, I balanced it out with an upvote for synthwave.
ardme··on The freakishly strong base
Wow, thanks this is exactly what I expecting in the comments here! I was expecting it to have some cool application but according to wikipedia there are no known uses for it yet.
ardme··on Ask HN: Is any senior dev reasonably happy with their job?
I would recommend slack-lining as well if you are looking to improve balance. I also think it is safer than skateboarding too in terms of joint health and all of that.
ardme··on Do Not Eat, Touch, or Even Inhale the Air Around the Manchineel Tree
I thought the mention of water hemlock near the end was interesting. Actually, common poison hemlock (which is related) grows all over the U.S. midwest like a weed and it is very deadly. You will see it growing in fields and at the side of many highways if you drive through Ohio. It is commonly mistaken for wild carrots (aka queen anne's lace). It famously was used to poison Socrates, and it kills a lot of livestock accidentally in modern times.
