archsurface··on Alien Dreams: An Emerging Art Scene
"intention-less" - agreed. Lacking in connection with anything human. It feels like a glorified /dev/urandom. I feel empty looking at these. I once wrote a program that iterated over every combination of colours of pixels to create every possible image for the specified size - similarly empty.
archsurface··on An Elixir adoption success story
Concurrency vs performance, not concurrency is performance.
archsurface··on An Elixir adoption success story
I can't say I fully agree. Maybe for scripting languages. Some projects require knowing the intimate details of a language and its sharp edges, and that knowledge can take years to accrue.
archsurface··on Pfizer and Moderna vaccines may produce lasting immunity
Clearly not healthy.
archsurface··on New LinkedIn Data Leak Leaves 700M Users Exposed
But you're fine because you didn't give them much personal data. Because by now you're perfectly aware of this scenario. So you take your privacy seriously.
archsurface··on Pfizer and Moderna vaccines may produce lasting immunity
Like my immune system.
archsurface··on Parse, Don't Validate (2019)
"It's weird how long it's taking for people to rediscover why strong static types were a good idea." It sounds like you're projecting your limited experience eg you've dismissed all Ms dev. Many people have been using strong static for decades. The benefits have never been out of sight. Many use dynamic, but many have always used strong static.
archsurface··on Linus Torvalds: Get vaccinated. Stop believing the anti-vax lies
Seriously? Linus's opinion on covid? Pull up your socks, people.
archsurface··on Neural networks emulate any guitar pedal for $120
I bet not the miku.
archsurface··on You Don't Need to Rebuild Your Development Docker Image on Every Code Change
A star fruit is also known as a carambola.
archsurface··on San Francisco’s Shoplifting Surge
Crikey. I see audacious shoplifting in London, but not like that.
archsurface··on Woke at Work: Why tech firms are trying to run away from politics and failing
I have no tolerance for politics at work. As far as woke at work goes, not too long ago someone in my office commented on slack "I don't approve of unnecessarily gendered emoji" - I can't even begin to imagine what sort of mind produces such thoughts. First world problems? No idea.
archsurface··on There have been 7M-13M excess deaths worldwide during the pandemic
What rubbish. In the UK the figures have been blatantly inflated. The entire UK media has turned into a bought and paid for government propaganda machine; the only journalists left are the independents. The whole thing has been such farce that I now struggle to acknowledge anything more than the presence of a virus. I still, after a year, don't know anyone who knows anyone who's died from this catastrophic, sky is falling, disaster pandemic. Condolences to anyone has been affected, but this whole think stinks with deceit.
archsurface··on Green gold: Avocado farming on the rise in Africa
Ok, thanks. I was in sub-Saharan Africa, so zero exposure to the Mexican aspects, and I don't recall anyone ever giving a damn about fat content in anything. We also had banana, pawpaw, and guava trees - avos were just one of the standard fruits.
archsurface··on Green gold: Avocado farming on the rise in Africa
I don't understand this avocado obsession of recent years. What's the sudden interest? "Avocado on toast" - what's that about? Some sort of dig? Or people genuinely think this is exciting? I grew up with a couple of avocado trees in my garden from '80-ish, but it's not like it was a rare earth mine. This makes as much sense to me as people getting excited about oranges; genuinely confused.
archsurface··on First Flight of the Ingenuity Mars Helicopter [video]
There's no chance of me hugging the people I work with. None. Ever. I would only go for drinks with a few of them, but not often. Places vary, and in previous places I've had good drinking buddies, but hugging work people has never happened and never will. I'd hug the helicopter.
archsurface··on How Developers Choose Names
Naming gets far worse than that. I've worked on code where the naming was not just unhelpful, it was outright misleading. One of the worst I remember was a project which unsurprisingly was named after a game of thrones character. As I never watched game of thrones it took me about two weeks before I could even remember the stupid name, during which time I was also dumbfounded as to how the program worked until I realised the naming in the code was equally bad, completely misleading. Then there's the place where the stg1 environment was actually the dev0 environment...
archsurface··on Ask HN: How can a unhireable person get a job?
You're simply aiming way too high. Those companies are all world renowned; most companies are not. Nice to have ambition, but it has to match reality, and evidently it doesn't. Apply to companies that aren't known beyond the city; work your way up from there.
archsurface··on Surface Laptop 4
I'm running Arch on mine, 2.5 years old, everything works fine, and I love it. I get dells at work, and also have a mbp, but no contest - surface laptop 3 is the bar for me.
archsurface··on The UK Is Trying to Stop Facebook's End-to-End Encryption
Vote libertarian. Governments will do what they can to make their jobs easier, to show off success. I know left leaning people are going to dislike that, but it's a double edged sword - if you want eg a national health system, you're going to end up with the government telling you to eat your five vegetables each day.
archsurface··on Go Developer Survey 2020 Results
Strangely, sometime last year I commented on HN about a contribution fiasco, and a bunch of "community" jumped on me, downvoted every response to their refusals to believe it. I've mostly abandoned Go at this point, partly due to the language, very much due to the "community". (Posted from a different account - to save you the time of looking).
archsurface··on Switzerland votes against electronic ID system provided by private companies
Only for people who moved there, knowing full well that they were moving into a different culture, and that as a minority they would have to adapt to local norms. I've lived in a number of countries on various continents, and I have never expected the locals to adopt my way of doing things - I think that would be utterly bizarre. If you go there without a degree of humility and willingness to adapt you're a colonist.
archsurface··on Switzerland votes against electronic ID system provided by private companies
I would no more like minarets in very country than i like starbucks and mcdonalds in every country. It seems to me the anti-xenphobia people are in fact killing off cultures as they create a single global mishmash culture. The excitement and adventure of travel is on its way to dead.
archsurface··on Beej's Guide to Network Programming (1994-2020)

archsurface··on The Road to Utopia: A manifesto for reclaiming a humanist future (2020)
Utopia the goal, dystopia the result. It's a trap.
archsurface··on Perl.com Taken over by Domain Squatters
Accurate observation, and useful response. /s
archsurface··on Toyota's game-changing solid-state battery en route for 2021 debut
I don't know that I'd go so far as to say Tesla is screwed, but certainly massively over valued. I am baffled at how valuations seem to think all other manufacturers are just going to shrink away without any fight. I agree with the increasingly zealous misuse of downvoting; I had an account on another device which had every single comment downvoted; presumably I said something someone didn't like, but with no associated comment who knows.
archsurface··on Twitter locks account of China's US embassy over its defence of Xinjiang policy
Back when cyberspace was a separate world, not just a digital representation of this one. I feel the same about the industry regarding work - the work place and ways of working have changed, and I no longer enjoy it. Where is the new off-world to escape to?
