archivator··on An Empirical Study of Cryptographic Misuse in Android Applications [pdf]
Excellent study! I know it's not exactly easy to do with their analysis framework but I'd be interested to know how many apps just ignore certificate errors. It's a depressingly common "solution" on Stack Overflow..

Re: list styling - you can make the whole list a different colour and also "extract" it with different borders. Consider indenting items more visibly - either more leading space or a more visual left border (e.g. something that looks like [ or { )

archivator··on English has been my pain for 15 years
While it might not be on the World Service, I'd like to point out that a wide range of content is internationally available in the form of podcasts, this is the Radio 4 link - http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/radio4 but do browse around. There's really an incredible amount of content on there (and there is a ton more across the pond at NPR).
archivator··on Non-English-based programming languages
As an aside, if you (the reader, not Avshalom) haven't read much Russian literature, Russian is the language where you take the first syllable of every word in a long phrase and you make a new word:

Министерство здравоохранения => Минздрав (Ministry of Health => Minheal)

Министерство юстиции => Минюст (Ministry of Justice => Minjust)

etc, etc. As a foreigner, I found that quite peculiar though it doesn't seem to be as common now as it was before but it's still noticeable in everyday life.

archivator··on Google Ventures Puts $258M Into Uber, Its Largest Deal Ever
I feel really cheap promoting this sort of stuff but try anycabs.co.uk - it's a bidding system and so prices are consistently quite low. Also, I've also gotten decent cars, never had any trouble with people not showing up (even when I've gone for the cheapest bid, expecting crap cars). I've been in brand new Priuses, new BMWs and decent cars altogether (different companies and YMMV obviously but it's cheap). I've also had drivers really impress me by not letting a fully closed-down M25 slow down my transfer to the airport.

As a price point, I've always managed to go Docklands to Luton for under £50.

archivator··on Red Pill, Blue Pill: Is the Universe Just a Giant Computer Simulation?
I think calling it a trick is unfair. It's not just P(C3), it's really P(C3 | !C1 && !C2), where C1 and C2 are really big events, so the fact they haven't occurred narrows the search space quite a bit.

Remember, he's not just talking about any conciousness simulations but a specific type - ancestor simulations, which allows him to pull more rabbits out of his hat than might normally be able to hide in there.

archivator··on Red Pill, Blue Pill: Is the Universe Just a Giant Computer Simulation?
As soon as I saw the title, I knew Nick Bostrom would be involved. And therein lies chaos.

First, to clarify something from the article - Bostrom's "posthuman" civilization is not strictly about the singularity but about almost unbounded capabilities. Building computers out of planets would be within reach for such a civilization. Think Culture, not Neuromancer.

The ratio of simulated people vs people in the actual universe was "addressed" in one of Bostrom's subsequent papers but in a completely ad hoc if-you-do-this-then-you-prove-my-point way. Here's some arguments against it - http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Simulation_argument#Calculating...

All in all, the SimArg is a nice thought but it's so easy to poke holes without first becoming a posthuman civilization that it loses what little stability it might have had.

archivator··on Windows 8 Benchmark Records No Longer Accepted
And so does my Fedora install (let's not blame Redmond unnecessarily).

My Android phone is even worse - it drifts by about 5-10s a day. Not a nightmare but it's still a lot more than my (probably unrealistic) expectations of 21st century hardware.

archivator··on Fast Android emulator using VirtualBox
Am I the exception here? I've always found the qemu x86 images fast enough (with kvm support in the kernel). Genymotion doesn't feel particularly faster than the standard x86 images.

Could this be a non-Linux phenomenon?

I think I'll benchmark it in the near future!

A. He published the email himself, in a comment on a public blog post.

B. Whatever the forum, this sort of astroturfing is undermining discourse. Yes, it's particularly out of place on SO but it'd be equally bad on XDA (where they don't even need it! Samsung have such a huge following over there that it's almost a religion!) To me, these people need to be called out on it. They need to understand that underhanded tactics will not be tolerated and I stand by every decision in this case so far (explicit or implied).

archivator··on Samsung agency is buying off StackOverflow users
Hi all. Delyan here.

I'm kinda bummed I didn't submit this myself. I would've loved to cash in on those most precious of internet points. Oh, well. :)

To address the question of discussing this publicly: I don't think I'm doing them any favours right now. I'd like to think that the developer crowd (especially the one at HN) is not as easily swayed by competitions, challenges and brands as to forget sleazy behaviour like this.

I'm calling them out publicly because our places of discussion are very rarely guarded by tall walls. Instead, they let everyone in (and that's what makes them great). The price is that every once in a while we all have to push some people out. That's what I'm trying to do by writing this post.

Also, I apologize for the spelling and grammar, I wrote it early in the morning and my brain was still complaining about sleep deprivation and whatnot. Stupid brain.

P.S. also, guys, can I ask a quick favour? If anyone notices the site is down, please drop me a line (my email is in my profile). It's shared hosting and I'm not sure how well it will cope with top-of-HN. Especially when PST wake up.

I'm a huge FOSS proponent but the Ribbon design blows the LibreOffice design out of the water in terms of UX. I'm seriously more productive with MS Office and I've been using OO/LO for 4 years now!
archivator··on Android vs. iOS: Comparing the Development Process of the GQueues Mobile Apps
Agreed. Unfortunately, that's a guarantee that Android's licensing model can't provide. Every manufacturer can do whatever they please, so fragmentation can't be regulated.
archivator··on Android vs. iOS: Comparing the Development Process of the GQueues Mobile Apps
AOSP is different from OEM builds. It's not an emulator problem, most of the time. The folks at Genymotion seem to be working on fixing that with preapproved builds and more powerful controls.

archivator··on DoorDash (YC S13) Delivers Food Quickly In South Bay, Hopes To Expand Beyond Food
Back in Bulgaria someone got the idea to use the taxi fleet for food delivery - the delivery charge is still fixed, it's just that the car is a taxi. I always thought this was very clever.
archivator··on Hidden “App Ops” Feature in Android 4.3 Lets You Disable Permissions From Apps
Uhm, yes, that, precisely. Most of Android is on a level playing field - core framework services get elevated permissions under the system group but they're still apps. If you let the user uninstall them, all hell will break loose. It's like removing the svchost.exe process in Windows. Or removing /bin/sh in Linux. The rest just doesn't work without it. Things like Contacts, Calendar storage, Bluetooth, Play Store, Google Backup, etc, etc, are all in /system/app, where manufacturers also put their apps.

If you ask me, manufacturers should be prohibited from adding to /system/app but that's not how the Android licensing works. So, we get un-uninstallable apps (vote with your wallet - buy only Nexus experience!).

archivator··on Understanding CPU Steal Time - when should you be worried?
Micro instances only provide "burst" CPU usage - if you keep above a certain threshold for long enough, it will throttle you by stealing CPU time (hence the 99%).

archivator··on What's new in Android 4.3
This can be done on older versions as well but the app has to declare itself as an Accessibility Service, which is a massive hack. Google are fixing that by mirroring that specific use case in a separate service.
