archimedespi··on Ask HN: Is it common to run anti-malware on production linux boxes?
> [forgive me if I misunderstood the topic]

You didn't misunderstand at all! When I stated that, I mean two different things:

- Kernel hardening

Kernel hardening is when you take the kernel and add patches/configure it to be more secure, like grsecurity.

- Userland hardening This is when you do exactly what you're talking about: you restrict what the userland can do and configure userland programs to be more secure (ie turning off insecure Apache options). This could also mean jailing or containerizing them.

archimedespi··on Ask HN: Is it common to run anti-malware on production linux boxes?
Having done some sysadmin for unix/linux, I haven't run into too many anti-malware programs for unix/linux or actual uses for them.

Kernel/userland hardening is a thing, however, and is arguably more effective.

archimedespi··on Ask HN: What Keyboard do you use?
A shitty laptop keyboard way too often (hp dv7) and, when I have space to get it set up, a Apple Extended Keyboard II with a ADB converter that I built.

I'm currently looking at the Das Keyboard or the CODE keyboard.

archimedespi··on What's your favorite distro, and why? Nov-2015
I'm using Xubuntu 15.04 (going to upgrade to 15.10, but holding off for compat testing for a week or two). I've gone through a ton of distros and I've liked this one the best.

I ran Arch awhile ago, got tired of things breaking, then switched to, in series, Linux Mint, Kubuntu, Ubuntu, and then finally Xubuntu, which I actually like the look of. I'm considering switching to NixOS with AwesomeWM at some point, but everything's working pretty well for me under Xubuntu right now.

archimedespi··on A new look for repositories
SSH is blocked on some corporate firewalls, they've said before that they've implemented HTTPS support to get around this.
archimedespi··on A new look for repositories
Ha, they're going back to the way repo tab navigation used to work a long time ago, with the tabs on the top, like [1] and [2].

Arguably it's a nicer look with some UX benefits.

archimedespi··on Wizards and warriors, part five
Nice approach; this is a common sort of dilemma for API design.
archimedespi··on Ask HN: What determines lifespan of a post on HN homepage?
There's an analysis at http://www.righto.com/2013/11/how-hacker-news-ranking-really..., also I know 'pg posted the Arc code that powers the ranking in a HN post several years ago.
archimedespi··on Linus meltdown on a Git pull
This is just Linus being Linus - he's like this quite a bit. He's... very opinionated.
archimedespi··on Mimic – abusing Unicode to create tragedy
Can anybody provide an audio snippet for those of us who use Linux?

archimedespi··on The Hard Math of the Cinderella Story
I noticed it as well. LVDS laptop LCD, Firefox/Xubuntu 15.04.
archimedespi··on The Dynamic Def – abusing Ruby's def statement
Ha! An IRB-based interactive adventure is actually really, really cool and clever. It never fails to amaze me how much Rubyists abuse metaprogramming and langauge quirks.

Somebody now shall goeth forth and implement Zork...

archimedespi··on How is NSA breaking so much crypto?
It is possible for sets of very few people to communicate in ways the NSA could never break. Examples: DH/RSA with ~2^14bit keypairs, OTP, etc. It's much harder on a large scale, but in the end, I think it's doable.

The NSA can build a giant supercomputer/ASIC system/FPGA grid, but they're not going to factor a 2^14bit prime unless they have working quantum.

The only problem then is, unfortunately, having correct, secure, and non-tampered-with implementations of all the requisite libraries.

archimedespi··on Ask HN: How can you tell if you are insane?
Reading books is an incredibly awesome way to get away from anxiety or paranoia, especially if you're one of those people who can really "get into" a book.
archimedespi··on Piston – A modular game engine written in Rust
I had massive problems getting 3d up and running. I'm not really inclined to try again, unfortunately - because it's actually a pretty cool library.
archimedespi··on Show HN: Download any song without knowing its name
Nice! Added to my dotfiles :)
archimedespi··on Show HN: Clone all of your GitHub repos at once
Good solution! You can use this for orgs as well, just curl

  https://api.github.com/orgs/[orgname]/repos
instead.
archimedespi··on How I could hack internet bank accounts of Danish largest bank in a few minutes
I think the point is that the debug is leaking sessionid cookies, which could be transplanted into your browser to fake a session.
archimedespi··on Show HN: I made a site that shows Bitcoin news, except with burritos
Oh my god this is hilarious. It reminds me of the Cloud To Butt thing.
archimedespi··on Users Have Been Betrayed in the Final TPP Deal
I was saying that a particular technique was more effective than the originally posted one to which I responded.
archimedespi··on Users Have Been Betrayed in the Final TPP Deal
The point of plausible deniability is that you have an entire fake partition, with operating system and innocuous data, which looks like it's the only one on the hard drive.
archimedespi··on Ask HN: What happened to the monthly “Best Laptop" threads
It stopped when every reply was either about macbooks or thinkpads.
archimedespi··on Users Have Been Betrayed in the Final TPP Deal
But there's always plausible deniability :)
archimedespi··on The Wretched Table: How Dinner in America Became an Ordeal
Not really. I'm actually talking about upper middle class families in my comment, and it's more about how good food/eating education isn't available to lots of children because their parents have no idea about it, regardless of class.
archimedespi··on The Wretched Table: How Dinner in America Became an Ordeal
> It's hard to read this and come away from it feeling that the problem is anything more than willfully ignorant parents (healthy eating information isn't hard to come by), indolently wallowing in their lack of self-awareness and inconsistencies.

> In other words, normal people.

As much as this looks like a rude thing to say, (and it kind of is), it's really quite true and I've experienced similar things with various parents I've seen (thankfully not mine).

archimedespi··on Show HN: Clone all of your GitHub repos at once
It's nice! I'm setting up a new Linux install on my workstation, and I found this really useful.
archimedespi··on Ask HN: What are you working on this week?
Ooh, I might check that out! Unfortunately any miners I'd attach wouldn't be anything permanent, or even good as far as hashes/sec.
archimedespi··on Ask HN: What are you working on this week?
School! And robotics team stuff.

I'm currently polishing a Slack chatbot for engineering-notebook-chatops, working on some boards in Eagle for a universal, multicell NiMH charger, and also hacking on my fork of ReplicatorG (I'm trying to clean the code up, it's a bit WTF-y right now).

archimedespi··on Apparatus: graphics editor and programming environment for interactive diagrams
Inkscape is awesome. Unfortunately one of the things its used for _a lot_ is designing for a laser cutter which is _not_ it's strong point: it can't really do precise stuff like you can in Solidworks with dimensioning and relations. I'd love an OSS solution for vector drawing that has dimensioning and relations, if anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them.
