archb··on The Mullvad Browser
This is super interesting. From Leta FAQ[0]:

Did you make your own search engine from scratch?

We did not, we made a front end to the Google Search API.

Our search engine performs the searches on behalf of our users. This means that rather than using Google Search directly, our Leta server makes the requests.

Searching by proxy in other words.

I thought it'd be possible by simply turning off "Always use private browsing mode" setting, but it doesn't seem to work. Sessions are still cleared upon browser exit.

In my case, I had to turn off that setting because without it, 1Password wouldn't work.

archb··on The Mullvad Browser
I decided to test it out on a website[0] and it does seem that the useragent goes by the Firefox name:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; rv:102.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/102.0

On my Firefox:

Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:109.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/110.0

It's interesting to note that the Mullvad browser seems to be based off on Firefox 102.0, which came way back on June 28, 2022:

I'd especially be interested in seeing how they implement on iOS, with Apple considering opening up options beyond WebKit:

It's based on Firefox, and I am able to install Firefox extensions. With 1Password on it now, I think I am going to try this browser for a while.

archb··on A fake job offer gone wrong
Two of my friends got the same email upon applying: offer to interview, PDF interview, offered job position, asked to sign offer letter, and offer to send a check.

It easily stood out as a scam, as I have read tons of similar stories on reddit.

What stood out to me is that they had applied on Indeed via LinkedIn, yet gotten into this scam loop. As Indeed a reputable place, curious, I applied to the same position but was rejected in a day, and my rejection letter came from official AutoNation address.

archb··on MagicDNS is generally available
Yes, is possible using the free tier: https://fly.io/blog/stuff-your-pi-hole-from-anywhere/
archb··on MagicDNS is generally available
I have the same setup! Very happy with the Fly pihole + Tailscale combo, but I recently tried the Tailscale + NextDNS combo and I might move to it altogether. Only problem is that NextDNS seems blocked at my university and I am not sure how to solve that yet. Using pihole on Fly with Tailscale works fine.
archb··on Ask HN: Twitter results not showing up in DDG
Seems okay at my end.
archb··on DuckDuckGo email protection beta now open
I have read the FAQs page but I am not seeing an answer to a question just yet: can one lock the 0.99 USD limited time discount forever?
archb··on DuckDuckGo email protection beta now open
Same, it is not available on Safari though.
archb··on Ask HN: Why do you use a VPN?
Could you tell me a bit more about that setup? How exactly does a VPN fit into that flow, instead of just sharing the social media account passwords?
archb··on Show HN: Prose.sh – A Blog Platform for Hackers
I have sent an email to hello@prose.sh. Happy to continue to conversation there.
archb··on Show HN: Prose.sh – A Blog Platform for Hackers
Look forward to custom stylesheets! I am trying to push an update but it's failing at the moment:

``` blog scp ./*.md prose.sh:/ _readme.md 0% 0 0.0KB/s --:-- ETAlost connection Connection to prose.sh closed by remote host. ```
What can cause this? `ssh name@prose.sh` works though.
archb··on Show HN: Prose.sh – A Blog Platform for Hackers
This looks great! I have been recently using 1Password as my ssh-agent, which means my SSH keypair will always be available on all devices where I am logged into 1Password and can blog on prose.
Questions after having used the product for 5 minutes:
1. Do you have plans to allow for customization? For, I want to get rid of italics on the date and be able to add menu items.
2. What happens if I `scp ~/blog/file.md prosh.sh:/`? Will the previously-uploaded content remain online? Perhaps more of a scp question? This is my first time using the command.
archb··on Reddit is down globally
Same here. In my experience, "Unable to reach CDN" message is a bit common, and occurs at random times. I could I see it at least once every week.
Seems to be fine at my end. Logged out homepage and search queries.
archb··on Ask HN: Has GitHub email notifications stopped for anyone else?
It has been over an hour since I received my last email notification from GitHub. The systems status page does not indicate any outage: https://www.githubstatus.com/
archb··on Ask HN: Help me help my deaf teammate
I don't think that person asked the OP to reach out on their behalf. OP is just trying to learn how they can be respectful/supportive of the deaf person's condition and help.
Hard of hearing as well. Personally, I have found Zoom's live captions to be decent to make sense of what's happening. There are some words that are misinterpreted, but the overall context is understood.
My only complaint is that these accessibility features should be available to everyone, not gated to free users. At the start of COVID in 2020, Zoom allowed free users to request captions as well and it took a few followups for my account to be enabled. Not sure if they are still offering it.
I am 26. I have been off of social media for about 5 years now. Friends that I want to stay in touch with are on Signal. Don't regret it one bit. Pretty happy.
