Doing software stuff in the Bay Area.

I've released an experimental iPad sequencer called Composer's Sketchpad: http://composerssketchpad.com

And an Untappd-integrated app for drink tracking called Good Sprits: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/good-spirits/id1434237439

I've also dabbled in CRDT research: http://archagon.net/blog/2018/03/24/data-laced-with-history/

archagon··on Control the Ideas, Not the Code
People who do this are no longer engineers in any real sense. They’ve switched careers to technical management.

Thank you! Putting it on the watchlist.
archagon··on Ask HN: Add flag for AI-generated articles
Personally, I've never seen a dead comment come back to life. I'm not sure using the vouch button does anything. (It does for submissions, though.)
archagon··on Ask HN: Add flag for AI-generated articles
I beg to differ. It's a far cry from where it was a decade ago.
archagon··on Ask HN: Add flag for AI-generated articles
They only have to slip up once. And they will, because LLM users are lazy, and LLM content naturally regresses towards the mean.
archagon··on Ask HN: Add flag for AI-generated articles
Fine. Looking at today's /active, it's more than half just based on the titles. (Likely 2/3 or more in practice, but I did not delve into each post.) And this does not feel particularly unusual.
archagon··on Ask HN: Add flag for AI-generated articles
Reputation. If it’s not a one-off, they will eventually get discovered and lose their audience.
archagon··on Ask HN: Add flag for AI-generated articles
Pretty trivial for a writer to say “no AI used on this blog.”
archagon··on Ask HN: Add flag for AI-generated articles
A good link aggregator should strive to select the <1% of articles that are actually high quality. Who cares what “everyone” is doing?
archagon··on Ask HN: Add flag for AI-generated articles
I am exclusively interested in the remaining 5% that is not AI slop, so yes, I always want to see that information.
archagon··on Ask HN: Add flag for AI-generated articles
As opposed to wonderful old HN, where about 95% of the front page is now AI, AI-related, or AI-generated.

Not Brazil — Mexico — but the movie Roma does an amazing job at dissecting this sort of dynamic.
archagon··on Don't you mean extinct?
Designing good tests requires the most intelligence. Sometimes even more than writing the code itself. You have to fully understand the code, its uses, and its various edge cases.

Automating this away feels like massive folly.

archagon··on Don't you mean extinct?
People, generally, do not like to die. They will do various things to avoid doing so.

The Luddites were a small group; AI has the chance to turn a majority of society into loom-smashers, which will be very fun to watch.

archagon··on Don't you mean extinct?
AI is not an abstraction. None of those tools are stochastic decision makers.
archagon··on Don't you mean extinct?
> My hobby AI projects feature wise match existing company offerings in about a week of turn around.

Another thing that LLMs are particularly good at is instilling their users with a false sense of confidence.

archagon··on SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
Just as a reminder, Musk's actions lead directly to the deaths of (likely hundreds of) thousands of people in the third world: https://archive.ph/20250629012329/https://www.nytimes.com/20..., https://www.propublica.org/article/kenya-trump-usaid-world-f...

Enjoy your marginally improved connectivity!

archagon··on SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
It's inevitable that at some point, a hostile nation will, ah, "disagree" with this laissez faire approach and start launching junk satellites at the Starlink constellation. That should be fun.
archagon··on I think I have LLM burnout
Maybe it's a good thing to only do those things you can find (or make) the time for.

When the rug gets pulled, what are you going to do with this giant pile of unfinished and unmaintained projects?

archagon··on Suspecting AI cheating, Ivy League prof ordered in-person final; scores fell 50%
Cynical? The press release for the latest Grok version is sitting at the top of the front page. And half the people on this site don't see the problem with that. They'll welcome their roman-saluting overlords with open arms.
archagon··on Suspecting AI cheating, Ivy League prof ordered in-person final; scores fell 50%
Fascism is the more likely outcome.
archagon··on Grok 4.5
Here you go, so that you can become familiar with that story: https://apnews.com/article/elon-musk-grok-ai-south-africa-54...

Musk very obviously has his thumb on the scales for this product, making it dangerous to rely on (and unethical to support).

archagon··on Grok 4.5
Did they explain why the model started pumping out garbage about white genocide in South Africa?
archagon··on Microsoft fire idTech team at Id software
I don't understand. Why can't you just... change your mind and push for unionization now? Don't wallow; act.
archagon··on Learning to code is still worthwhile
LLMs are as much an "abstraction" as outsourcing your app to a bunch of contractors: a silly dilution of the word to the point of meaninglessness.
archagon··on Fable turned reMarkable into Tom Riddle's diary from Harry Potter
It’s like calling a journaling framework anne-frank. Surface level pattern matching without a single thought given to the subtext.

This is why programmers desperately need liberal arts education.

archagon··on Fable turned reMarkable into Tom Riddle's diary from Harry Potter
I'm not sure there is much of a "you" here.
archagon··on Fable turned reMarkable into Tom Riddle's diary from Harry Potter
Seems pretty evil to pretend that safeguards around this product are even possible. They're not.
archagon··on Fable turned reMarkable into Tom Riddle's diary from Harry Potter

archagon··on Fable turned reMarkable into Tom Riddle's diary from Harry Potter
I had to do a double take. They’re framing this comparison as a positive thing?!?

(On second thought, the LLM probably made up this analogy on its own, which... in a way, is even worse.)
