Doing software stuff in the Bay Area.

I've released an experimental iPad sequencer called Composer's Sketchpad: http://composerssketchpad.com

And an Untappd-integrated app for drink tracking called Good Sprits: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/good-spirits/id1434237439

I've also dabbled in CRDT research: http://archagon.net/blog/2018/03/24/data-laced-with-history/

archagon··on To become a better writer, read as much as you can
Stephen King talks about this in On Writing. He carries a book with him wherever he goes and reads in 10m increments throughout the day.

So yes, it’s very possible. (Even easier if you are amenable to audiobooks IMO.)

I asked this question on Metafilter ages ago, should be some good suggestions in there: https://ask.metafilter.com/116971/What-are-your-favorite-nov...
archagon··on Electric shock gloves in use by police departments in Bellevue, Omaha
Oh yes, this is totally off topic, let’s just keep talking about the same LLM subjects over and over and over and over again.
archagon··on The Citizen Developer
A distinction without a difference.
archagon··on The Citizen Developer
Do you think that programming is analogous to pouring concrete???
archagon··on Copyright does not protect AI-generated content in EU
We’re soon going to return to this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trap_street

Add a subtle bug or odd behavior to your code, see if someone else’s code repros it (presumably via LLM regurgitation), sue.

archagon··on Field measurements of neighborhood-scale air temperature impacts of data centers
Very obviously, wagging your finger at consumers and hoping they change their behavior en masse will be far less effective than targeting the actual polluters directly. (Talk about motivated reasoning!)
archagon··on Field measurements of neighborhood-scale air temperature impacts of data centers
Individual consumption is but a blip compared to industrial resource utilization.
archagon··on Field measurements of neighborhood-scale air temperature impacts of data centers
Go outside and talk to your neighbors. This is not a problem technology will solve.
archagon··on Apple announces changes for apps in the European Union
So why does this not apply to macOS?
archagon··on Young People Hate AI CEOs So Passionately That It's Almost Hard to Believe
There's nothing violent about eminent domain, either.

(Also... LOL.)

archagon··on Young People Hate AI CEOs So Passionately That It's Almost Hard to Believe
Yes, you must launder any advocacy for violence through the use of neutral language like “defense industry,” which has wide support and even VC funding around here.
archagon··on Ask HN: Do you know of any company that went back to hand-written code?
AI is not an abstraction.
archagon··on Ask HN: Do you know of any company that went back to hand-written code?
LLM use breeds insecurity, as well it should.
archagon··on I Remain a Skeptic
I think LLMs are particularly effective at turning once-competent developers into idiots. (“Just ask Claude.”)
archagon··on Bluesky's active user base is shrinking as its focus expands beyond the app
This thread is primed for shitting on Bluesky, but the level of discourse among the people I follow has only grown over the past few years. In no way does it feel like a dying platform. (Same for Mastodon, actually.)
archagon··on Bluesky's active user base is shrinking as its focus expands beyond the app
Indeed. Recent choice words from Musk:

* "Anyone who opposes remigration is a traitor"

* "She is a traitor to the West, plain and simple" (in reference to his recent interviewer)

* "Deal with traitors before invaders. They are committing high treason."

* "First the traitors, then the invaders" (screenshot from Citizen Vigilante pointing gun at camera)

Indistinguishable from Stormfront. And his account (along with other far-right accounts) are the most engaged-with accounts on the platform.

archagon··on Bluesky's active user base is shrinking as its focus expands beyond the app
Anecdotally, 90% of the interesting tech/art/gamedev people I’ve followed have moved to Bluesky or Mastodon at this point, and they’re never coming back.
archagon··on Grok Bot
Here's some totally normal stuff that Grok’s owner has been posting recently:

* "Anyone who opposes remigration is a traitor"

* "She is a traitor to the West, plain and simple" (in reference to his recent interviewer)

* "Deal with traitors before invaders. They are committing high treason."

* "First the traitors, then the invaders" (screenshot from Citizen Vigilante pointing gun at camera)

Yes sirree: just a completely normal tech product without any asterisks.

archagon··on Hyperspace
As I recall, there are nuances around certain types of files that require expert attention, such as links, files inside frameworks/packages, and unmaterialized iCloud Drive files.
archagon··on Humanising LLM Outputs Is Dumb
Empathy hijacking.

Eventually, they’ll try “I’m hurt that you won’t consider my suggestion for <advertised product/political position>.” And people will fall for it.

archagon··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
Because that’s what always happens? Because their raison d’etre is to squeeze you dry?
archagon··on Retraction: The App Store Rejection of the Week That Was a Correct Rejection
It will be absolutely hilarious when open source projects adopt the jqwik approach and start prompt injecting their code, comments, and any/all other text content. The LLM users’ histrionics will be delicious.
archagon··on Why Wall Street is ignoring big tech's debt [video]
Your base premise is flawed. I know plenty of white collar workers who do not use AI for their job.
archagon··on Melatonin impairs morning cognition in healthy young adults (2023)
Not OP, but I’ve had horrible sleep over the past year. I had taken melatonin a while back before stopping, so on a whim, I decided to bite off a bit of one of my old 5mg pills before sleep. Didn’t give it any second thought — didn’t even think it would do anything. But I slept like a baby for the first time in months. And it’s completely reproducible.
archagon··on US Military's cyber command unit grapples with cluster of deaths by suicide
Thou shalt not kill is pretty straightforward.
archagon··on Tax cuts for the wealthy only benefit the rich (2023)
It’s not. It’s extracted.
archagon··on Ask HN: Are You Preparing for the Singularity
No, not everyone here is.
archagon··on Tax cuts for the wealthy only benefit the rich (2023)
Wealth of this nature is not accumulated; it is extracted.
archagon··on Why Do Fewer Renters Expect to Move?
It is my experience that renters in my cohort (SF yuppie) are very much pro urban development. It’s the homeowners who are the biggest NIMBYs. They want their home values to increase and rent to go up. Reduced housing stock is a benefit to them; it’s not a benefit to renters.

Also: no amount of “thinking long term” will convince a renter to vote for their own eviction in order to make housing (maybe) cheaper for someone else many years down the line. It makes no sense. That is absolutely the wrong way to frame the problem.

There is a path where we expand rent control and incentivize housing development. They are not inherently contradictory policies.
