aratno··on Flex
I appreciate the demos for each of these applications, but the descriptions could be more specific. I'm interested in what Trainee _does_ but it's hard to understand. There are many questions left unanswered by this page, such as: How are problems with unknown variables displayed? How are more sophisticated games displayed, such as two-player games (Connect 4), imperfect information games (Minesweeper), etc?
aratno··on Ask HN: How do you evaluate a job offer and the company offering it?
In most industries, this is not a red flag at all. Nobody doing anything serious would let normal applicants look openly at their codebase.
aratno··on Mathify – Simple Text Equation to LaTeX
Some equations are invalid LaTeX, such as `x_{1+x}_2`, but show up with translations regardless.
aratno··on πfs – A data-free filesystem
You mean, if there was an oracle for instant pi-index lookup? All finite-length strings can be expressed as natural numbers, so the pi-index is just a mapping from that number to another, pi: N -> N, with no guarantee of any more efficiency. Over the set of all finite-length strings, I do not think this would provide an advantage. But it might be fun.
aratno··on How to never complete anything
At least in tech, the equipment is free.
aratno··on Txt.fyi
Some markdown features aren't working, like code blocks and newlines (by ending a line in double-spaces). Also, unknown routes don't 404 nicely; they just hit the Apache default.
aratno··on Pijul – A free and open source distributed version control system
Would love to see more explanation (with diagrams) of their patching model. Right now I'm not convinced it has any intuitive advantage.
aratno··on The Linux Credit Card
Why would they donate money for corporate sponsorship ranks if they're already donating so much code? Honest question. I thought they were the second largest contributor to the kernel code base after Intel.
aratno··on Show HN: Gomix the easiest way to build apps and bots
Like a fiddle on steroids, yeah.
aratno··on OpenAI Universe
I just hope no self-driving vehicle is applying anything learned in GTA.
aratno··on Show HN: NetIn – Shorten job interviews by answering the questions only once
This needs to add screenshots before I'm convinced.
aratno··on Turning off syntax highlighting
I'm arguing that dimming them makes them easier to see. Code and comments are interspersed, and are each harder to see when they're the same color.
aratno··on Turning off syntax highlighting
I totally agree with this, and use `:syntax off`, but comments really mess with visual clarity. For dimmed comments, I sometimes switch to nofrils.

aratno··on Design legend Milton Glaser: “Design has nothing to do with art”
I love that this article thinks the oracle has spoken, even though qualified designers disagree with Glaser.

From Design as Art by Bruno Munari:

> The designer of today re-establishes the long-lost contact between art and the public, between living people and art as a living things. Instead of pictures for the drawing-room, electric gadgets for the kitchen. There should be no such thing as art divorced from life, with beautiful things to look at and hideous things to use.

Even Glaser's own office on 32nd street says "Art is Work" above the door! I thought he was a "Graphic design legend"?

aratno··on Image unshredding using a TSP solver
I wonder how well this would work with some image pre-processing. Wouldn't something like supersampling improve the speed per-pixel? Of course, it would require more pixels to be sorted, so I doubt it's any more optimal.
aratno··on Show HN: A Chrome extension to remind you why you opened Facebook
I was considering doing this too, but it would have taken way too long so I never got around to it.

Instead, I used Adblock and blocked the entire div! Now if I want to see my newsfeed, I can just log in on incognito, which I hardly ever do. Works great.

aratno··on The Math I Learned After I Thought Had Already Learned Math
For me, this has been about proving that mathematics is about more than just numbers. The world is made up of quantities, relationships, nodes, probabilities, and much more.

If students are expected to use math to make better decisions and understand the mechanisms of the world, a breadth of math needs to be taught earlier on.
