aranw··on Synology reverses policy banning third-party HDDs
Yeah UNAS is one option I'm exploring. But the only thing I'm wanting on top of all that is something like Plex or Jellyfin and I don't know how well it will play with a UNAS if running on a external server
aranw··on Synology reverses policy banning third-party HDDs
I don't think anything about this was innovating. I think it was purely a money grab attempt
aranw··on Synology reverses policy banning third-party HDDs
I believe they were basically saying a set list of approved hard drives
aranw··on Product Hunt is dead
This gave me one of those surreal "huh" moments I've had in awhile. I've seen loads of apps boasting about being "#1 on Product Hunt" or whatever and I just realised that I've never actually gone to Product Hunt looking for a product to use. Does make you wonder who Product Hunts audience really is and who is doing all the upvoting?
aranw··on YAML document from hell (2023)
> It's because other config formats aren't as expressive.

Oh yeah it is literally the best of a bad bunch in my opinion

I'm hopeful of languages like CUE https://cuelang.org/

aranw··on YAML document from hell (2023)
I find it remarkable that YAML has become our goto for configuration when it is riddled with parsing traps and inconsistent behaviour that catches out even experienced developers
aranw··on UK government advises deleting emails to save water
Knowing the UK government it wouldn't surprise me if we start getting regular emails or text messages reminding us to regularly delete our old emails and text messages to save water
aranw··on Ask HN: What alternatives to GitHub are you using?
I'm really liking tangled.sh but I don't think it supports private repos seen as it's built on top of atproto
aranw··on Outside of the top stocks, S&P 500 forward profits haven't grown in 3 years
> Seeing lots of commenters say they dumped their entire position in SP500. That is probably not the best move

Fair point about dumping entire positions not being ideal. I got lucky with the timing since the market dropped shortly after I sold. Definitely got lucky on timing that

Long term, I'll likely reinvest in the S&P 500, but as a much smaller slice of my portfolio alongside other indices, bonds, individual stocks, etc. The plan is to avoid that level of concentration going forward regardless of how well it might perform

aranw··on Outside of the top stocks, S&P 500 forward profits haven't grown in 3 years
Even total market indices are not truly diversified though. For example the HSBC FTSE All World Index (which I do hold some of) still has a 58% US concentration and 27% in technology sectors (14% software services + 13% technology). For something marketed as global, there's still a massive concentration in the US and technology sectors
aranw··on Outside of the top stocks, S&P 500 forward profits haven't grown in 3 years
I sold all my S&P 500 holdings and the majority of my US stocks a while back to diversify internationally. Being so heavily concentrated in US markets felt too risky at the time, so I pivoted to investing in funds, companies, and markets around the world instead
aranw··on Building Bluesky comments for my blog
I have a static site. Self hosted would mean I’d need a database and I think right now I want to keep the static generation. Happy to try self hosted in future and write my own solution but right now I got plenty of side projects
aranw··on Building Bluesky comments for my blog
> Even better, only show comments that your account has favourited.

Yeah I like this solution. Might try explore this approach

aranw··on Building Bluesky comments for my blog
Only thing I’m wondering about with this is how do you moderate the comments? Delete spam or rude comments?
aranw··on Replacing tmux in my dev workflow
I’ve tried tmux several times over the years and it has just never worked for me I’ve always struggled to remember all the keyboard shortcuts necessary for tmux or nvim or similar apps. I really like the look of shpool though cause I’d love to be able to log into a server and get back to where I left off
aranw··on The FIPS 140-3 Go Cryptographic Module
Did this make Go a less attractive option compared to other languages then? I’m interested in understanding how this will help Go and the community
aranw··on The FIPS 140-3 Go Cryptographic Module
> This also now makes Go a very convenient language to write US Gov software in.

This is something I wondered. Will we now see even more adoption of Go? Will Go be a more attractive option compared to language X/Yv

aranw··on The FIPS 140-3 Go Cryptographic Module
Ahh okay I didn’t realise it is just a package. I wondered if it was more than that and included stuff with the compiler or something
aranw··on The FIPS 140-3 Go Cryptographic Module
I’m curious to understand what implications this will have on Go and where it is used? How does this differ to other languages as well? I don’t fully understand what it will mean for Go and its community
aranw··on Generic interfaces
> if it's more _easily_ comprehended (faster, with less effort, with fewer mistakes in comprehension) with the highlighting

But this is completely relevant to the person reading. It may be for you easier with highlighting but someone else it may not be

aranw··on What would a Kubernetes 2.0 look like
YAML and Helm are my two biggest pain points with k8s and I would love to see them replaced with something else. CUE for YAML would be really nice. As for replacing Helm, I'm not too sure really. Perhaps with YAML being replaced by CUE maybe something more powerful and easy to understand could evolve from using CUE?
aranw··on Fang, the CLI Starter Kit
It's probably more accurate to say it's a Go Cobra CLI Starter Kit rather just a generic CLI Starter kit. I personally find Cobra bit OTT and bloated and try to avoid it where I can but this could be a nice starter point for my own similar library to suit my needs
aranw··on BuyMeACoffee silently dropped support for many countries, and nobody cares
Think Stripe already support this out of the box https://docs.stripe.com/payments/3d-secure. I think this is also a legal (maybe not legal but financial regulator or whatever there called) requirement in the UK so most if not all payments use it?
aranw··on Bloom Filters
Sam Rose has also written a great article on Bloom Filters and has some great animations to help illustrate it too. Definitely worth checking out https://samwho.dev/bloom-filters/
aranw··on A single line of code cost $8000
I have Screen Studio and I don't leave it open but all I wish for now is that you disable the auto updater. Provide an option for it to be disabled and allow for manual update checking. Checking for an update every 5 minutes is total overkill and downloading the update automatically is just bad. What if I was on mobile internet and had limited bandwidth and usage. The last thing I want is an app downloading it's own update without my consent and knowledge.
aranw··on Ironwood: The first Google TPU for the age of inference
I wonder if these chips might contribute towards advancements for the Coral TPU chips?
aranw··on Claude's Max Plan
I currently pay for Claude and I still find it best for coding but it's definitely bit unreliable at times and I find it rate limited or responses limited and also unresponsive at times. I wouldn't be upgrading to a $100/$200 packages unless the reliability improved on the $20 offering first
aranw··on Moscow-based global news network has infected Western AI tools
I was actually wondering whether this was going to be possible. I don't know enough about training AI's but surely if enough content like this is read into the system this will lead to biases in an AI's response?
aranw··on Tailscale is pretty useful
I've been using Tailscale for awhile now and even developed a few internal apps using tsnet as well but I had no idea about golink and it's awesome. Thanks for sharing that!
aranw··on Making o1, o3, and Sonnet 3.7 hallucinate for everyone
I wonder how easy it would be to influence super LLMs if a particular group of people created enough articles that were clear to any human reader that it's a load of garbage and rubbish and should ignore it but if a LLM was to parse it wouldn't realise and then ruin it's reasoning and code generation abilities?
