arandomhuman··on Show HN: A Language Server Implementation for SystemD Unit Files
thanks, not familiar with this in all entirety, will keep this in mind and always welcome for contributions expanding functionality :)
arandomhuman··on Anthropic cut up millions of used books, and downloaded 7M pirated ones – judge
Yeah, people have gone to jail for a few copies of content. Taking that large of a corpus and getting off without penalty would be a farce of the justice system.
arandomhuman··on Anthropic cut up millions of used books, and downloaded 7M pirated ones – judge
No but he coincidentally passed away after he was accused of it.
arandomhuman··on Show HN: A Language Server Implementation for SystemD Unit Files
it's that bad these days? Yikes :( I will not be redeeming.
arandomhuman··on Show HN: A Language Server Implementation for SystemD Unit Files
I think a user of _not_ neovim they'd have to implement their own js client. I honestly can't say much but with INI style formatting it's been mostly based on contstants rather than abstract syntax tree parsing which is unique and a bit of a problem in its own right. I haven't implemented a language server before so this was a learning experience, but I was very pleasantly surprised how adding it to my neovim configuration was. I am hoping at some point it's added to "mason" so it's even easier.

I would create a vscode client, but I am not really very familiar with that ecosystem. Welcoming anyone to implement this in any other editors. This is just the language server implementation with no assumption regarding clients.

arandomhuman··on Show HN: Modernized file manager and program manager from Windows 3.x
yikes
arandomhuman··on Show HN: A Language Server Implementation for SystemD Unit Files
That’s very interesting, but systemd is pretty pervasive I really don’t think it’s going anywhere anytime soon for better or for worse. Language servers aren't just adopted in vscode, other editors use them in fact. I am not a VS Code user myself, but I appreciate their implementation of the language server protocol, they did a fantastic job with that.
arandomhuman··on Show HN: A Language Server Implementation for SystemD Unit Files
Thanks for the positive feedback! The documentation needs a bit of revision, but I agree there's a lot of configuration file formats that should be supported with language servers that might not necessarily have rich AST parsing as part of their contents.
arandomhuman··on Show HN: I built a website to summarize Tech Twitter each day
Not to be that guy, tech twitter is already so reductionist in terms of actually quality content. Getting the most popular posts from there is going to be really "fluffy" in terms technical details. For instance how is Elon Musk declaring he's forming a new political party technology related news?
arandomhuman··on Stop Killing Games
Open source the server infrastructure or describe the protocol in sufficient detail to easily be reverse engineered.
arandomhuman··on Stop Killing Games
I think this initiative sounds great, it's curious to me in a legal sense why this would strictly pertain to gaming software and not one-time bought software licensing models as a whole. This issue is pretty prevalent in software in general. Software vendors should have some accountability for EoLing these things in a graceful manner.
arandomhuman··on OpenAI dropped the price of o3 by 80%
I think this is less caused by ChatGPT/LLMs and more of a phenomenon in social media circles where people flock to "the thing" and have poor social skills and mental health generally speaking.
arandomhuman··on AI code is legacy code?
I can’t tell if this is satire or not please help me
arandomhuman··on We identified a North Korean hacker who tried to get a job at Kraken
One time pads, enigma machines, Caesar ciphers :p
arandomhuman··on O3 beats a master-level GeoGuessr player, even with fake EXIF data
But then they couldn't make a click bait title for the article.
arandomhuman··on Oracle engineers caused five days software outage at U.S. hospitals
Yeah database backups are just too hard for a multi billion dollar corporation to handle.
arandomhuman··on The Burnout Machine
It’s actually upsetting how lazy this is and it still made front page.
arandomhuman··on Ask HN: Where do seasoned devs look for short-term work?
>Use LLM to write a post every other day (!). Within a month, you have 15 posts, which people will find useful as they search.

I don't think anyone will find this useful.

arandomhuman··on Ask HN: Recommend resources that helped your game dev journey?
This is really great feedback and not even trying to sell you on a marketing book or something.
arandomhuman··on AWS S3 SDK breaks its compatible services
Amazon, after making its pretty barebones fork, lobbed it off to the Linux Foundation. It ultimately feels lazy and self-serving in a way only a select few companies can pull off.
arandomhuman··on Has LLM killed traditional NLP?
>The fact that you can replace programmers with prompts

this is how you end up with 1000s of lines of slop that you have no idea how it functions.

arandomhuman··on The best darn grid shader yet (2023)
This is really awesome. to ask a dumb question, what’s a good way to get acclimated with running and building shaders? Just going straight to OpenGL tooling and extrapolating from there?
arandomhuman··on Visual Studio Code is designed to fracture (2022)
yeah I agree I think most devs that has used one of these distributions would be hard pressed to go back to vscode if they care about their IDE/text editor being open source - not to mention it can be a lot of fun extending them in ways that are personal to your workflow. Complaining about a massive corporate entity being self serving is kind of missing the hills for the trees.
arandomhuman··on Visual Studio Code is designed to fracture (2022)
If you don’t like it don’t use it, vim/nvm and eMacs exist and are very capable editors without compromising on ecosystem.
arandomhuman··on Ask HN: How to store and share passwords in a company?
Hashicorp Vault generally linked up to IDp or One Time Secret (or some service with expiring limited use links).

It’s pretty extendable and can integrate with other engineering use cases, shame about hashicorp license change though. Openbao looks great though as a replacement. These are open source so look no further if that’s what you’re looking for if you want password management, ssh auth, cert issuance, authentication and secret retrieval with k8s for example.

arandomhuman··on Dasel: Select, put and delete data from JSON, TOML, YAML, XML and CSV
Shameless plug but if you’re a fan of jq style querying rather than sql for some reason you can also use qq[0] for these and a few other formats.

arandomhuman··on An AI bot-war destroyed the online job market
That is fair I didn’t really consider that view point.
arandomhuman··on Our audit of Homebrew
If macs supported PKGBUILDs like Pacman with a similar level of performance and there were correctly maintained packages for core programs I'd feel like using a mac would have a lot less compromises for convenience.

Homebrew is great and the formulae are maintained really well but the simplicity of PKGBUILDS, the fast syncing, and lack of cognitive burden of recalling multiple arguments/flags for package managers make me wish pacman just worked on macs.

arandomhuman··on An AI bot-war destroyed the online job market
Automated job posting is apparently an “AI bot war” who’d have thought! sure it’s annoying but so is click bait.
arandomhuman··on Space Age release date
iirc the developer doesn’t do sales? idk it was never a fiasco, just bad if you like sales I guess.
