aram··on How To Get Started Contributing To Open Source
This is pretty much Rails/Ruby related only, and I believe that even though there are points to be taken for other programming languages, people who still haven't contributed to OS and working with, say, PHP will not benefit much.

And have to mention:

> "2. IMPROVE AN EXISTING GEM TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE"

This is such a cliché ("[doing something] to make the world a better place"), misused everywhere from CVs, random blog posts like this and missions of companies.

Seeing this phrase just downgrades the opinion and value of the source for me.

I agree about the crowdfunding idea; very often I find myself saying/attributing "Kickstarter" when I really mean "crowdfunding" :)

Thanks for the Git-Annex link - didn't know he ran a campaign on his own after doing it on Kickstarter.

You forgot the close the </stupidity> tag, so it doesn't affect other members.

It's great to see how Kickstarter helped also "stabilize" the development of Open Source software (another example is Django Migrations project [0] which has been discussed here a couple of times already). It helped Ghost provide something on a much higher and usable level than most other Open Source projects did, which should have positive impact on the user/community adoption. I'm speaking here about collaboration with Digital Ocean, Rackspace and Envato, as well as the marketing campaign by Kickstarter before this release. DOcean, RackSpace and Envato alone will generate pretty high traffic and build up the community, especially if Envato (with Tutsplus/Nettuts) starts doing something similar as for Laravel [1][2][3], and provide free developer introduction to the platform.

Glad to see this, hope it will keep up the expectations.

aram··on A list of free programming books
It's interesting to see how git/Github as a platform replaces Wikipedia in certain cases for collecting information and enabling people to contribute.
aram··on Culture Shock: Programming for the Enterprise
Very good points; I'll be writing my Master thesis on the topic of Corporate Social Responsibility / Human Resources and Open Source involvement for IT companies, and these are exactly the things I want to target.

It took me a good amount of time to explain my supervisor who is teaching management courses what is Open Source and how things work there. Even after that, I still think it's not quite clear for her.

The things that managers/purely business people don't get along with the most are the free and collaboration parts, because they are a bit "out of the box" for usual business mindset.

Good read.

aram··on Stanford releases "BitStarter Leaderboard" - Bitcoin powered crowdfunder
This repository is related to the final project of Stanford's Startup Engineering class held on Coursera[1]. The course is over today and two days ago the repository has been published.

BitStarter Leaderboard is built on MEAN stack (Mongo - Express - Angular - Node) and is a great source for analysis and learning about each of those technologies + seeing how completed project should look like.

aram··on Do you have this kind of comments in your source code?
This one is my favorite from there:

    #define TRUE FALSE
    // Happy debugging suckers
One other I found here on HN: https://github.com/PlatinumSkink/MiniRPG/commit/595c77f35e45...

OT: no, I don't write such comments in the code but came across some funny ones here and then.

aram··on API for creating random users in your application
I don't think so; it's pretty trivial to decode the JSON and make it a native object/array/whatever in almost any programming language.

So far I always did a "user[count]" or "user[timestamp]" thing and it was time consuming, dull and most of all didn't do the best job at presenting the app to the clients.

It looks fine on my end; what browser/OS are you using?

I said that he built that editor on Ace. I'm using it and I know it's OS.
aram··on Practical AngularJS Examples
Sidenote: the code editor used to live-preview/edit how examples work is great; does anyone know of any similar OS projects?

Post author (Martin Angelov) said that he built it himself on Ace, however it doesn't seem to be OS.

aram··on Homeless Guy Accepts Programmer's Offer To Learn How To Code
Thanks a lot for detailed answer and writing about your projects. Both are very interesting and were something I had on mind to do someday; that is why I asked to read about them.

Regarding the methodology/steps to help the guy: I do understand your point now and agree with all what you said, except the last bit - I still believe it's better for him to have even that chance than nothing. Even though this experiment might not make him a programmer, he will have a "motivator" in front of him for some time, internet connection and a laptop. This could (and I hope it will) change something in him when the project is over, no matter the end result with JS.

I see outcomes from this project as far from linear; for example: he might use internet to learn about something else he tends to understand easily, discuss that with his "mentor" and possibly end up working in that sphere. He has more chances to do something with that guy, chromebook and JS books than with nothing.

Hope this makes sense.

aram··on Homeless Guy Accepts Programmer's Offer To Learn How To Code
What would you do as a hands-on approach but instead of learning him how to code?

Regarding your two projects - did you write about them online? I'd be interested in reading them.

This is completely crazy; all these giga-pixel panoramas stun me with the level of details.

Does anyone know any details about taking shots with such cameras? How much time do they actually need to capture photos with such quality?
