Geometry. Rigidity. It's POTENTIALLY legit. Here is a pretty science based primer on some of the things going on in the cable world.

https://www.gcaudio.com/tips-tricks/why-power-cords-are-impo...

One thing to understand about this niche high end cable market is that intellectual property just isn't a thing. There isn't enough money to fight lawsuits and wage war against copycats. Everyone loses throwing money away.

The end result is that only large companies like AudioQuest can afford to "give away" the science behind their products by patenting them. Other companies have to talk around and obscure what ACTUALLY makes their cable sound good. This is a pretty raw deal for consumers who are left exposed and vulnerable to bad designers, fraudsters, and tricking themselves into thinking something sounds better when it's not. And that's not even getting into value judgements about what a cable is worth based on how much closer to perfection it gets the user!

The system does seem to be working as intended by small niche cable makers who spend lifetimes accumulating arcane knowledge and handbuilding quality cables while keeping the bar for entry to the market high.

Another neat tidbit about cables is that the product lines and price points are not linear. They just can't be in reality from a design perspective. The people that say a cable is a cable are half correct. It's impossible to have a cable lineup of 7 levels and improve on the induction, capacitance and resistance all at the same time in each level. So there are tradeoffs, and occasionally a cheaper cable from the same company will sound better than a more expensive cable because one or two of the parameters were improved while another got worse. Depending on the interactions between the connected equipment and their deviation from perfect, if the parameter that took a step backwards in a more premium cable happens to be the weak point of the equipment as well, then an objectively better and more expensive cable can sound the same or worse.

Hahaha! I can't imagine discussing the finer points of optimization on here.

"the electromagnetic signal of course rides half outside the wire in a world increasingly filled with RF/EMF noise. Be sure to keep your cables off the floor or there WILL be impedence changes. Also, the Frequency Response is largely not relevant as 95+% of audiophiles don't have effective bass traps or ways to remove excess energy from the room. Intelligibility is the better metric, and no one uses it because it requires bass trapping and that's just to ugly and expensive."

Are you ready to rip my head off yet for all these largely unknown but completely true scientific facts? :)

aquarium87··on Germany tells Musk it expects Twitter to fight disinformation
Then let the German government define what is information, misinformation, and disinformation.

Good luck. Governments want private companies to do their dirty work. But in this case, simply refuse and they have to back down or create the rules themselves. Don't think they are going to take on full censorship responsibilities.

aquarium87··on Everything You Never Wanted to Know About Hemorrhoids
Just two weekends ago, I had a conversation with a good friend, about his bloody hemhroids. He said it's surgery if it gets too bad. Now I learn we could have just rubber banded his hemhroid off? That's pretty high quality information to have for next time.
aquarium87··on Ask HN: What's your secret diet tip you can share?
I'm sure some of these have been said. But fat is satiating. Carbs are not.

So fill up on fatty meat, not fries and pasta.

Salt salt salt! It's not health advice, but just season to taste, and slightly over if you are preparing meals at home, not out of a can. In fact, forget the canned food.

Meat grinder, large cuts of beef, free scrap fat from butcher. Boil large cut and fat for 1 minute to kill surface bacteria. Grind. Cook medium rare. It's a real nice and satisfying meal. Forget cooking to 165.

No. I am NOT describing vigilantism. I am describing enforcement of rights, at the time they are violated.

The distinction being that vigilantism happens after the fact, or by people who were not witnesses.

As an example, if someone steals from a business and returns later, its too late to arrest or hold them. But if you perform a citizens arrest at the time of the theft that is legal.

Another classic example is a use of force altercation. All participants should be present from start to finish to avoid legal jeopardy if they wish to intervene. Someone that sees a fight after it started has no idea whose side it is legally permissible to take. Even so, it's very risky to intervene because it's hard to know what's going on in the heat of the moment.

This is why rights must be enforced in the here and now, by those that have standing to do so.

Otherwise, as you say, it's vigilantism.

aquarium87··on Police say member of Elon Musk's security team is a suspect in his stalker claim
I do think a careful and deliberate parsing of what he said is necessary. The rage machine likes to distort.

"Last night, car carrying lil X in LA was followed by crazy stalker (thinking it was me), who later blocked car from moving & climbed onto hood.

Legal action is being taken against Sweeney & organizations who supported harm to my family."

So for the scorecard:

Stalker: yes

Has to do with Musk: yes, it's his family

Didn't have anything to do with tracking his plane: Never made that claim. " legal action.... Taken against.... Who supported harm to my family" (I would add he could have used the words "supported potential harm)

Didn't happen in the way that musk described: he didn't describe how it happened. (unless from another source)

I think this is a good example of how going to original sources, not letting others prime opinions, and careful parsing of words is necessary in this world so as to not become a pawn in the game of outrage.

aquarium87··on Tesla ‘full self-driving’ triggered an eight-car crash, a driver tells police
I stand corrected. 30% more than average.

I believe that must have been a value judgement then.

Would need the average car price as well to get a true understanding, but at best that's going to make it middle of the pack.

aquarium87··on Tesla ‘full self-driving’ triggered an eight-car crash, a driver tells police
My uncle works for an insurance company, and a tesla is one of the absolute cheapest vehicle to insure.

I hear all these "tesla hit pieces", but my understanding is that they are much safer than human drivers, and insurance reflects that.

I don't see the issue as autopilot killing people, I see the issue as its saving lives, but the insurance aspect and AI aspect and responsibility need to be sorted out.

aquarium87··on Supreme Court likely to 'dismantle' student loan forgiveness after it hears case
Debt forgiveness is a necessity for a healthy society. When, how, how much, and for whom are the real questions to be asked.

In this case, it's the HOW that is problematic. In a sane world, all scorn would be heaped on the person that promised debt forgiveness knowing they didn't have the power to do so, for personal political gain, and willing to attempt to set a very dangerous precedent of limitless spending with the stroke of a pen by any president.

aquarium87··on Zero-Covid to zero deaths: China alters coronavirus counts
This is a BIG BIG story, specifically the exit from covid zero.

This article doesn't even attempt to capture the magnitude of what's about to happen to death numbers, case numbers, Chinese productivity, worldwide recession, further global supply chain issues and worldwide inflation.

Other sources are talking about a billion infections and 1-2 million deaths by spring.

The only allusion to that in this article is that deaths are expected to peak by January 31.

I'm doing back of the napkin math based on that and even if the number of infection so far has been covered up, it's not unrealistic to expect 500,000,000 infections in the next roughly 90 days. 6 million infections per day average, with peak seeing 20+ million infections.

I'm not a doomsdayist. And I don't even find these numbers scary. The other news article I read has the IFR at 0.1-0.2% ( 1-2 million dead out of 1 billion infections.

But for the world economy? Going to be a hell of a 2023, regardless of how many deaths the CCP decides to count.

aquarium87··on Police say member of Elon Musk's security team is a suspect in his stalker claim
There may be a disconnect between HOW the stalker found the vehicle, but it's pretty hard to claim he isn't a stalker, and the stalking didn't precipitate the twitter changes.

From the Washington Post (which hates elon and self admittedly didn't publish all the stalkers crazy claims):

"The car’s renter, Brandon Collado, confirmed in interviews with The Post that he was the person shown in the video. He also provided The Post with videos he shot of Musk’s security guard that matched the one Musk had posted to Twitter.

In his conversations with The Post, Collado acknowledged he has an interest in Musk and the mother of two of Musk’s children, the musician known as Grimes, whose real name is Claire Elise Boucher. Boucher lives in a house near the gas station.

In his communications with The Post, Collado, who said he was a driver for Uber Eats, also made several bizarre and unsupported claims, including that he believed Boucher was sending him coded messages through her Instagram posts; that Musk was monitoring his real-time location; and that Musk could control Uber Eats to block him from receiving delivery orders. He said he was in Boucher’s neighborhood to work for Uber Eats." [1]

aquarium87··on Police provide first official details of Elon Musk’s alleged stalker incident
To address the police report, it is meaningless at this point and media reporting is better to go off of. The police only take reports and investigate, but don't comment until charges are filed or the case is dropped. At this stage, regardless of what happened, the police took a report from a self-identified victim. I can report anyone for assault tomorrow, baselessly, and your answer would be to give no credence to the media who talked to the people involved, but rather accept as fact for now that I am a victim because I abused the machinations of power to my benefit.

As for the assault, which I have no doubt happened, we are arguing over the legality of it: People deserve to be assaulted all the time. The person that initiates violence, or otherwise legitimately violates or seriously threatens the physical security of another person deserves to be taught a quick lesson so they can ruminate about personal sovereignty and rights while they heal.

As a general rule, society calls on the strong to protect the weak. Violent people will seek to exploit weaker people. When a violent person errs and unknowingly seeks to exploit a stronger person, it is my opinion that it is the duty of the stronger person in a strong legal and moral position to take the opportunity to perform justice.

Said person doesn't need to know the crimes and transgressions of the aggressor in the past. That the person is now aggressing and violating others rights is enough. If it is the offenders first time, the lesson should hopefully suffice to make it the last. If the aggressor regularly violates the rights of others, it is karmedic justice at a minimum, and true justice if other victims hear about what happened.

TL:DR; it is a moral imperitive to dispense instant karma within the law for those who could not in the past, and cannot in the future.

aquarium87··on No, the FBI Is Not ‘Paying Twitter to Censor’
Straw man.

The FBI is not "paying" twitter to censor.

The FBI is reimbursing twitter for the costs associated with censoring on their behalf.

aquarium87··on Police provide first official details of Elon Musk’s alleged stalker incident
It's connected. But maybe not in the way you are strawmanning. The guy is clearly a deranged lunatic and a stalker that followed and intercepted Elons child near its mother's house.

As a driver, with a child of a famous rich person on board, getting out of the vehicle for an altercation is sheer madness. Not saying the guy deserves to get run over, but it's a pretty good outcome considering. I would bet that from a legal perspective blocking a vehicle with a body doesn't give consent to be run over, but that stalking and targeting someone AND detaining that persons vehicle with a body gives full license for bodily harm to escape. Probably not up to and including death without direct threats, a weapon, and threatening action, but certainly assault.

"The man said he was a delivery driver for UberEats, the Washington Post reported, and “made several bizarre and unsupported claims, including that he believed [Grimes] was sending him coded messages through her Instagram posts; that Musk was monitoring his real-time location; and that Musk could control Uber Eats to block him from receiving a delivery order.”

Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher, lives in a house near the gas station where the altercation occurred, the Post reported."

The study seems small. Really small. 125ish nights worth of data?. The results came back very comparable from all devices.

It's almost like when someone falls asleep it's pretty obvious.

I wish this study did a few things, like get more into depth on the sleep cycle. I own an oura 2. I perused the study, but didn't read it word for word start to finish, so I missed whether it was an oura 1, 2 or 3.

How accurate can these devices tell what stage of sleep the body is in? That's a more relevant question for 2023

aquarium87··on New device can make hydrogen when dunked in salt water
Seems very "micro" in its outputs, relying on water evaporation on one side of a membrane. But the future is very bright with many of these micro-engineered solutions on the rise. Won't save us from global warming or any of that, but the personal benefits of things like low energy Bluetooth powered by button presses, micro voltages generated from brownian motion, meta-materials controlling sound, etc etc.

Very cool addition to the future tool kit.
