aprdm··on Ask HN: Where Are All the Jobs At?
No, service and retail still like when people show in person
aprdm··on Cisco Acquires Splunk
Similar to hashicorp vault IMO
aprdm··on Ask HN: Do I need AWS? Or am I thinking this wrong?
Or maybe you never worked in certain domains of problems ? Not everything is a web app
aprdm··on Ask HN: Why Python relative import is so fundamentally broken?
That's opinion, not a fact
aprdm··on Ask HN: How many Slack messages do you send/receive outside working hours?
Hmmm sometimes I send/read, but I have notifications off and have zero expectation of replies or replying.. just when I'm bored.
aprdm··on Ask HN: What's the biggest red flag you've encountered during a hiring process?
Nvidia, like many other tech companies, has many people/teams/departments/division. Is very hard to get a clear view of the world from a single point.

Who knows, maybe if you joined you would have hated it too, or loved it ! The story you shared is likely shared by many other companies that went through hyper-growth

TLDR: Stuff is hard!

aprdm··on Ask HN: Can bad code kill a product?
Absolutely it can. But it's rarer than you think.
aprdm··on Software Engineering at Google (2020)
mid-size with thousands of engineers? Wow, mid-size for me is around 100-200 people :)
aprdm··on Why Is Rust Programming Language Becoming So Popular?
Vocal minority is a good thing to keep in mind when reading about Rust
aprdm··on Ask HN: How do you use Obsidian.md for note taking?
Yep I need windows and Linux access too tho
aprdm··on Ask HN: How do you use Obsidian.md for note taking?
I don't ! I've been using Joplin, much simpler and has what I need + the sync story seems better/less expensive..

I just need a folder-like structure for markdowns and some labels (which I barely use) to sync w/ encryption between devices. I thought Obsidian gave way too many knobs that I didn't use, and the sync was expensive.

Note taking is more about taking the notes than the fuss around, at least for me :)

aprdm··on Kubernetes Exposed: One YAML Away from Disaster
Yes, same with cloud and giving devs full access to AWS/Azure/You-name-it. Disaster waiting to happen
aprdm··on In California, Car Buyers Are Choosing Electric over Gasoline in Record Numbers
Yes I rented a Tesla recently in Ontario and I didn’t realize it takes 6h for a full charge, I also didn’t had a charger in the hotel neither did I have a nearby.

Basically had to Uber while charging…

aprdm··on Meta blocking news links in Canada
Why should the government of Canada be on Facebook's team instead of the Canadian Telecom's team?
aprdm··on Ask HN: I think most SaaS can work well SQLite. Prove me wrong
Probably ! I use SQLIte for most of my web services, I have yet to hit a point where I need to scale them out
aprdm··on Ask HN: What's your secret for making pretty website designs?
buy a theme from bootstrap, is like 50 bucks
aprdm··on Apple Vision Pro developer kit
People use game engines for more than just gaming too
aprdm··on Stay or Leave: Manager Admitted I am on PIP because quota
I think it's a last resort for someone who isn't listening to a specific feedback well, it requires the manager (IME) to be crystal clear on what's not working well, and how they can improve it. And to follow up on in some cadence (every 3 days) with notes, laser focused. Giving an amount of time for the person to show they can and want to change.

In one of the cases the person who got pip'd got promoted to Staff Eng from Senior within a year, it was mostly about his attitude, not about his technical skills, and he changed completely. I think that person was just not self aware how people didn't enjoy working with him, even if the manager gave feedback, he thought it was funny or something like that.

It was a real "Am I the bad one" moment when the PIP process started. Another one was about how they always went too deep into rabbit holes and never delivered any value, to change the way they approach problems, etc.

I feel feedback from managers is extra challenging in remote environments OR in places where a person has been for too long and is too used to the status quo, and PIPs can help there.

I count myself luck that I haven't worked in companies where PIPs were used as a tool to layoff or fire people, but I also take some of those reports with a grain of salt.

aprdm··on Stay or Leave: Manager Admitted I am on PIP because quota
In my experience, having PIP'd people, that's hasn't ever been the case. It's never fun for the manager or the person or the company. In 3/4 of the cases they passed with flying colours and both sides were glad we went through it.
aprdm··on Diablo
yes I totally agree.
aprdm··on Become Ungoogleable

aprdm··on The office is a theatre for work (2019)
What a crazy thing to read, makes absolute no sense in any level
aprdm··on The office is a theatre for work (2019)
Not every startup is like that. There's plenty of 9-5 out there. Look for startups with older people who have kids..
aprdm··on The office is a theatre for work (2019)
100% ! Doesn't take any of it too seriously, try your best to be part of the act and have a positive impact on it, don't get upset if it isn't working out for whatever reason or if it simply isn't your kind of theatre ! There are many theatres out there..
aprdm··on Ask HN: I have 10 yrs of Exp. Failed 4 takehome projects. What am I doing wrong?
Why do you think random people on hackernews are going to take the effort to read your code ?
aprdm··on Ask HN: What tech newsletters are you currently subscribing to?
They stay in my inbox, whenever I have time I read one and archive.. I do not read them often.

I have also unsubscribed to a bunch as they have too much for me to casually consume. Pragmatic engineer one is great that it has a single topic and goes deep into it. Level up one is great as it has some great insight in the introduction and then it's more of a pointers to articles that I might click or not.

aprdm··on Ask HN: What tech newsletters are you currently subscribing to?
pragmatic engineer and levelup from Pat are the ones I read the most. The first one I'm not paying for, as I don't have the bandwidth to consume more than the free edition as it stands. I probably read one article per month from both of them, I prefer Pat's and maybe is a bit more unknown.
aprdm··on Ask HN: Stuck as a developer for 15 years. How to become a manager?
Not true in tech companies , eng usually has an equivalent career ladder up to VP level with same pay bands
aprdm··on How to 1.5x your salary through negotiation
Stay in a company for long enough time to get the experience required :)

There's a lot of books on it, "Staff Engineer: Leadership beyond .." is a good one (more towards Staff rather than Mgr/Director).

I rarely see people being hired at those levels, it's usually people from within the org that gets promoted with time.

aprdm··on How to 1.5x your salary through negotiation
that's wrong in so many levels, once you're director+ or staff+ it's very unlikely that you will make more money moving rather than going deeper
