aprdm··on Ask HN: Is anyone else bearish on OpenAI?
Not really.. I think you don't know what you're talking about :)

It's a chat, she is talking about a subject, and then she can expand on a word, all very naturally, as she is talking with a human.

That's very different than having some subject you're reading about and then having to carry a dictionary which has no context about the subject, and doesn't talk back to you

Yep totally agreed. I have very junior developers doing complex tasks with the aid of it — for example sql queries , elasticsearch, ansible, react — all without having touched them before

I don't know, I've only used chatgtp 3.5, haven't tried other things. Out of your questions I would think only the last one would be a good fit.

The first one is open ended and I don't think M1 came before the "cut date of knowledge" in chatgtp. The 2nd one is too niche, likely not enough data to grab.

For the 3rd one, I don't know if the "date of knowledge cut" isn't recent enough - powershell became a thingy more recently and isn't wide adopted.. but I would expect to be a good fit

I think this speaks to the bubble you're in and how your kind of software development probably represents 0.1% of what's out there. I don't even know what WebGPU, Warren Abstract machine or "whatever is that you're trying to do" is.

I've been doing dev for ~20 years now, most of the work out there is essentially plumbing events/databases/REST APIs/regexes/JSON/configs/ web UIs in existing and well established frameworks/tools to solve business problems.

You likely work more R&D style environments, which again, probably represent a very low % of devs out there

Hm, my wife uses it daily for her classes which aren't tech related. She describes it as a very patient professor who meets her where she is at and doesn't judge. English isn't her first language too and sometimes she can ask what a term means in English.

> I am using Linux and trying to set up a systemd service that needs X to display a UI through VNC, how can I get the X authorization token in my systemd file

> I'm using python and my string may contain file paths inside, for example: (...) , For anything that looks like a filepath inside the string we should replace its full path, for example (..)

> Can you write me a python script to kill processes in Windows that no longer belong to a process named "gitlab"

> I want to write a test for it that mocks both sentry_sdk and LoggingIntegration so that I can give my own mocks during test

It should be able to be called from the command like, like below (example)

Write me the script

All real examples from last week that took me 1 minute to be solved instead of of googling or creating from scratch / thinking about it

Are you using 3.5 or 4? And what kind of things are you trying to do ? It's not like asking it, copy + pasting results + paste errors loop takes a long time to validate if it works or not. Even when it doesn't work it saves me time vs google-ing and also not solving my problem. Or gives me insights.
aprdm··on Ask HN: Is anyone else bearish on OpenAI?
Have you actually tried to use it ? I use it everyday and is absolutely amazing -- saves me a lot of time. We've also built automations around it and it saves our company a lot of time. It's already here and in use by many companies for use cases it makes sense...

> What also got in the way were the people themselves - all the smart people who could argue against anything but not for something, all the leaders who lacked the courage to speak the uncomfortable truth, and all the people that were hired without a clear project to work on, but must still be retained through promotion-worthy made-up work.

This is golden. I've seen this pattern in a couple of places I've worked unfortunately. Mainly people who love to argue against, but not for something.

aprdm··on Why aren't SW developers working on more important problems?
I think you're not seeing it through the same lens :) Look for example all machine learning, hardware, AI, LLM, etc.

None of that came to be used in the world due to University departments. Maybe some of the theory behind it, sure, but making it useful in the real world through engineering, no.

Microsoft "side project" innovation vs current Microsoft innovation (e.g: what goes into building something like Azure or ChatGTP backend) is also very different :)

aprdm··on Ask HN: Meta/FB layoffs a year later – where are you now?
Not true. There's a lot of exceptions to the rule. I was lucky enough to work on a couple on my 2 decades career so far.
aprdm··on Why aren't SW developers working on more important problems?
Nope, most of new ground comes from companies
aprdm··on Why aren't SW developers working on more important problems?
(1) pay is shit, (2) this problems aren't solvable by software alone or at all
aprdm··on Ask HN: Infra people in small companies, what does your infra look like?
yes this but with NGINX/Systemd! Haven't used caddy - will check
aprdm··on Ask HN: Infra people in small companies, what does your infra look like?
Lol, the amount of databases running real production heavy workloads for the biggest companies in the world that haven't been updated in 10y is probably very high :) at least the ones I've seen ..
aprdm··on Ask HN: Infra people in small companies, what does your infra look like?
One can easily set up prometheus/grafana or ELK or sentry when you're that small on another VM.
aprdm··on Ask HN: Infra people in small companies, what does your infra look like?
really ? Wow.. I've never had 120 VMs to manage in any org I was part of, and have worked on fortune 500 companies !

I have provided infrastructure-as-a-service for many many baremetal/VMS/containers, but then I wasn't managing them (e.g: it was many small team's infra, not a small team of 10 people using 20-120 VMs as per OP)

aprdm··on Ask HN: Infra people in small companies, what does your infra look like?
Digital ocean with NGINX in a VM, web app in another and Postgres in another... will take you very far, just take backups and deploy all with ansible
aprdm··on Reflections on quitting my job
shipping what business requires, and communicating with other humans
aprdm··on Ask HN: How's your job search going in this current economy?
I don't. I usually have ~100s of candidates per role. Is not practical
aprdm··on System Design 101
yeah I would say I'm fairly experienced and I absolute love their gifs and images. But I find the content very shallow overall and very oriented towards passing interviews - which I believe is their goal so :)

I appreciate the gifs !

I think you're underestimating how much write happens in SO, and overestimating how much writes happens on 99% of the SaaS that have very few paying customers..
aprdm··on Tell HN: Wise froze $40k+ in funds for 10 days and counting
Completely unrelated and will get flagged/downvoted - but x.com is such a weird domain, I don't know how people are still around on Twitter still ...
aprdm··on Ask HN: What tech stack are you using for MVPs, early products? (Q3 2023)
The same of 10y ago Django Postgres

if it needs more Redis RabbitMQ [even tho more Kafka nowadays] React

I believe all AAA companies work very closely together with the GPU vendors during all the cycle of dev.. it isn’t as if they aren’t aware or don’t want it
aprdm··on Ask HN: What software did you purchase that positively impacted your family life
1password , fastmail, joplin
aprdm··on Live near your friends
Yes totally. Join Tennis clubs, Soccer clubs, (other clubs).. have a coffee regularly w/ the ones you get along with.. it's incredible easy to make connections if you put the effort IMO.
aprdm··on Live near your friends
Yes that's also true. My core group of friends is no longer in my OG city as well for similar reason as me, as aren't most of my cousins. It's more uncles+grand+parents
aprdm··on Live near your friends
Very nice! I've thought about something similar. Of course that a challenge is when you marry someone from yet-another nationality. Our plan right now is to try to get key members of the family that want to be together to where we're at even if we help them financially to migrate/move, since we have very good financial situation and the people we're targetting are mostly empty nesters or work in similar field.
