aprdm··on Ask HN: Is every company's internal wiki just broken by default?
Yes. Use Glean. It's a very smart search across every knowledge base (Confluence, Slack, Google docs, Outlook etc)
aprdm··on Ask HN: What are some cool or underrated tech companies based in Canada?
So many great companies, thanks for starting this & people for sharing
aprdm··on Tell HN: I Lost Joy of Programming
Use it as someone you are working with / talking with. Not as auto complete. You need to reframe your work a bit to have best results interacting w/ llms
aprdm··on Ask HN: How did Soham Parekh get so many jobs?
> Easily top 1% or top 0.1% of candidates

How do you measure that ? It seems like he wasn't a good candidate after all. I hope y`all learn a lesson about hiring and moving away from things that aren't signal to a job.

aprdm··on Are we overfitting our code to trends instead of problems?
That's very true. Lots of Java, C++ in big companies / enterprise systems that "just work" for a long time
aprdm··on Ask HN: Tips for hiring? It has been difficult
It’s a good question but I don’t think so, short of requiring a cover letter with the application but I bet I would face a similar challenge there.

The candidates and CVs do look like what I’m looking for, until I interview them …

aprdm··on Ask HN: Tips for hiring? It has been difficult
It used to be that just quickly parsing through CV I could separate candidates that are worth interviewing.

Nowadays there seems to be way more CVs that are well written and crafted for the role. Some of the initial screening I did was clear the person didn’t have the experience in their CV

aprdm··on Ask HN: Tips for hiring? It has been difficult
Where did I say that ? I am replying to a post that mentioned it.

I definitely want to hire the best matches to the role I am offering tho, but practically will settle for the ones that seem good to work with and that can get the work done.

aprdm··on Ask HN: Tips for hiring? It has been difficult
How do you get the best 30%? 30% of 1k is still 300
aprdm··on Ask HN: Tips for hiring? It has been difficult
In principle I agree. I worked in a similar industry until recently and it was much easier. Also because the influx of CVs for an opening was much smaller, I could actually read them into detail and have conversations. Because they were 10s of applicants over a month instead of 1000s.

I do hire juniors and interns as well. And I have similar issues for those. On interns we had 1000s of people interested.

aprdm··on Ask HN: Tips for hiring? It has been difficult
Yeah I agree, but I feel then we become very bias towards referrals and people who recruiters already trust - many developers despise recruiters for whatever reason.

I haven't seen a better approach tho.

TLDR: Ci/cd for services on CSPs
aprdm··on Ask HN: How do I learn robotics in 2025?
Check out isaac sim from nvidia
aprdm··on Thoughts on thinking
That's a deeper question that only you can answer. I can only say that your thinking based on how you phrased it doesn't really lead to happiness in general
aprdm··on A Research Preview of Codex
She can try to reach out to possible mentors / people on Linkedin. A bit like cold calling. It works, people (usually) want to help and don't mind sharing their experiences / tips. I know I have helped many random linedin cold messages from recent grads/people in uni
aprdm··on Ask HN: What will tech employment look like in 10 years?
I got into CS because I liked games. I wouldn't know how to ping a host by year 2, in fact, I hated CS and only finished it because my father insisted.

Wasn't until I got my first internship by year 4 that I started to work/enjoy it, and have had a very successful career so far (20y in)

aprdm··on Ask HN: How do you store the knowledge gained in a day?
Yep. Agreed. I do keep notes on people & recurring meetings (as a leader) using Joplin which helps me to recap for the next meeting.

Very lightweight bullet-points. That's it.

aprdm··on Ask HN: What is the worst communications tool you've ever used?
If entire countries runs on Whataspp (including business) (e.g: Brazil) it surely adds a lot of value ?
aprdm··on Getting things “done” in large tech companies
Yeah I should go one step deeper, on big tech, it also depends a lot on the org inside the company sometimes.
aprdm··on Getting things “done” in large tech companies
This really depends on the company. There are many companies where eng has way more weight than PM. And that eng aren't so divorced from customers. Even big tech.
aprdm··on On loyalty to Your Employer
I feel this is a pretty cynical view. We can all be adults and understand it is a business relationship.

The "reward for loyalty" varies greatly per company, but I would like to see it defined. I have worked on 12 companies since I started my career, some of them would probably rank very high for your definition and others very low.

aprdm··on When so much knowledge is produced every day, how do you keep up?
Why do you feel like you need to keep it up ? The foundation of computing hasn't really changed too much in the last 20 years. Master the foundations and maybe read this site once a week ?
aprdm··on Ask HN: Why don't hiring managers provide feedback?
send them a personal email or linkedin msg
aprdm··on Stoop Coffee: A simple idea transformed my neighborhood
I love this. I will bookmark / see what I can do once it stops raining everyday in Vancouver
aprdm··on Career Development: What It Means to Be a Manager, Director, or VP (2015)
Can you share a bit more about Bezos email ?
aprdm··on Career Development: What It Means to Be a Manager, Director, or VP (2015)
Not true in my experience being on both sides of the equation
aprdm··on Ask HN: Why don't hiring managers provide feedback?
There are thousands of CVs per opening in some companies, how do you expect people who barely have time to read the CVs to also give individual feedback ?
aprdm··on Making Postgres scale
Why is it brute force and why is it bad ?
aprdm··on Making Postgres scale
99.9% of the companies in the world will never need more than 1 beefy box running postgres with a replica for a manual failover and/or reads.
aprdm··on Ask HN: Best way to simultaneously run multiple projects locally?
can use ansible (or ssh) and copy a tarball (or python package or pull docker container)
