appointment··on Pontevedra, Spain declares its entire urban area a "reduced traffic zone"
If there is no correlation between actual crime rates and perception of crime rates there is no reason to do anything about actual crime rates.
appointment··on Toyota is recycling old EV batteries to help power Mazda's production line
What does "imagined" mean? Nio has been doing automatic battery swaps on a mass scale for years.
appointment··on Will Smith's concert crowds are real, but AI is blurring the lines
The whole point is to make people believe in nothing. When all news is fake, no news matter.
appointment··on Swiss vs. UK approach to major tranport projects
But the WCML is at capacity, so it is not in fact adequate.

"There is no available capacity without significantly impacting performance and causing a reduction in timetable resilience due to the resulting requirement for successive services to run on minimum headway"

https://www.orr.gov.uk/sites/default/files/om/wcml-capacity-...

appointment··on A new poverty line shifted the World Bank's poverty data
Where are people living on $3/day getting fat?
appointment··on Return of wolves to Yellowstone has led to a surge in aspen trees
The problem across most of North America and Europe is that hunters do not kill enough, and the number of hunters is declining as rural communities shrink.
appointment··on Where's Firefox going next?
People have been raging about Mozilla copying Chrome's minimalist design for many, many years.
appointment··on Riding high in Germany on the world's oldest suspended railway
Here's the original 1902 footage as digitized by MoMA, without AI bullshit smeared over it:

appointment··on End of an Era: Landsat 7 Decommissioned After 25 Years of Earth Observation
The climate truths remain inconvenient.
appointment··on Whatever happened to cheap eReaders?
Put it in airplane mode?
appointment··on Firefox tab groups are here
Netscape always called the url bar the "location bar". "Address bar" is Internet Explorer's term. (At some point Netscape/Mozilla copied the ctrl+d shortcut for A_d_dress from IE as well.)
appointment··on Windows 2000 Server named peak Microsoft
You are confusing 2k with NT 3.1. Win2k was not happy with anything less than 128 MB RAM.

edit: changed to 128 MB. It was XP that needed 256 MB to be any good.

appointment··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
The massive tax cuts Trump is trying to extend or introduce are much larger than the spending cuts proposed so far.

edit: Also the USA is nowhere near a default, unless congress chooses to not raise the ridiculous debt ceiling policy.

appointment··on The Wright brothers invented the airplane, right? Not if you're in Brazil
Musk's actually successful rocket is not made from steel. It has yet to be demonstrated that Starship is rapidly reusable, let alone that steel is significantly superior than other materials for this purpose.
appointment··on Planes are having their GPS hacked. Could new clocks keep them safe?
Satellite guided approaches are used when there is no visibility, so I don't know how that would help. You could use terrain-matching radar for navigation, but that would require additional equipment on the airplane. Every plane already has GNSS receivers, so implementing RNAV is basically a software feature.
appointment··on Planes are having their GPS hacked. Could new clocks keep them safe?
That would be impressive because there isn't a standard format for NOTAMs. They are intended for humans, not machines. It's a major problem that safety critical information is often not available in machine readable format, so you can't have a plane's navigation system automatically give warnings if you program it to fly into restricted air space or to a navigation beacon or runway that is announced as offline for maintenance by NOTAM.
appointment··on Volkswagen reintroducing physical controls for vital functions
I don't think VW ever moved away from conventional stalks for wipers and indicators. The drive mode is also on a stalk in the ID.3.
appointment··on Why Vermont farmers are using urine on their crops
Why is that an issue? I don't think anyone is given mandatory tests for estrogen.
appointment··on Why Vermont farmers are using urine on their crops
The headline should specify _human_ urine. Spreading animal urine on crops is of course standard practice everywhere.
appointment··on TSMC expected to announce $100B investment in U.S.
"US patriots" have fealty to an imagined version of the constitution that lets the Republicans do whatever they want. There is no reason to think this will change if the Republicans get even more fascist.
appointment··on TSMC expected to announce $100B investment in U.S.
The idea that Brazil, South Africa and fucking India would support the PRC against the USA is absurd.
appointment··on Geothermal power is a climate moon shot beneath our feet
Estlink 2 (650MW, 450 kV) has been cut twice in a year, with months-long outages in both cases.
appointment··on Teslas monitor everything – including you [video] from WIRED
Driver attention monitoring is very normal and required for any car with significant Assisted Driving technology, which is likely to be all new cars soon. I expect safety scoring schemes like Euro NCAP continue to give AD systems higher and higher weights in their scores over time.
appointment··on US Space Force reveals first look at secretive X-37B space plane in orbit
This flight was launched with a Falcon Heavy, that is why it has more energy to reach high orbit than the previous launches with an Atlas V booster.

When you are in a highly eccentric orbit (meaning the point in the orbit farthest from Earth (apogee) is much higher than the lowest point (perigee)) like this one there are several maneuvers you can do to significantly change your orbit with relatively little energy. The article describes some of the things they are testing.

A small breaking burn at apogee will lower the perigee into the upper atmosphere and they can then do aerobreaking (use atmospheric drag to lose energy) to slow down enough to land.

appointment··on Sweden Seizes Ship Suspected of Baltic Sea 'Sabotage'
Do you have statistics for the Baltic Sea? The amount of shipping in that area is much lower than in the major international shipping lanes like the English Channel.
appointment··on Sweden Seizes Ship Suspected of Baltic Sea 'Sabotage'
In my opinion statements like that are mostly a sop to the French and other formerly Nazi-occupied peoples, who were not happy that the de-Nazification process was largely abandoned after only a few years and most war-time German military and civilian officials were given blanket amnesties and used to rapidly rebuild the new West German state and military.
appointment··on A popular but wrong way to convert a string to uppercase or lowercase
The key takeaway here is that you can't correctly process a string if you don't what language it's in. That includes variants of the same language with different rules, eg en-US and en-UK or es-MX and es-ES.

If you are handling multilingual text the locale is mandatory metadata.

appointment··on Why has nuclear power been a flop? (2021)
It is not going to happen. France's existing nuclear fleet will not replaced by new nukes when they reach end of life.

It is clear after three EPR projects have massively overrun in a row that Areva/EDF can't do it, and when faced by paying a foreign company to do it they will choose solar and wind instead.

appointment··on CSS Grid Areas
The very first thing you need to know about CSS is that it uses the language of print layout, not programming.

A lot of the problems programmers seem to have with CSS probably stem from this misapprehension.

appointment··on Nuclear SMR welding breakthrough
COVID has killed 7 million people since 2019. Airliner* crashes killed 80 people in 2023.

These risks are not of the same class.

* admittedly I'm exaggerating slightly by not considering private and military aviation, but I'm too lazy to find that total.
