aphantastic··on Half-Life 2: 20th Anniversary Update
783 keys, rather. $500. Volume looms pretty low though…

Any idea how much earbuds are worth nowadays? I got the originals for being a first-day mac player, then traded them for some absolute nonsense… rip.

The length of the contents of the tape of any halting TM will be less than or equal to the number of steps it takes to run. Quite trivially: you can’t consume tape without taking a step. For BB(5), 4098 1’s are written to the tape (this is referred to as Σ(5)). As for the length of the contents, I’m not sure, but again you can’t so sume tape without a step, and anecdotally the BBs are generally “back and forth”, at least the Collatz-like ones (which BB(5) is).

Now introducing a brand new, declarative framework built for interoperability and ease of use. Forget bundling, transpiring, packaging, dependency management – and don’t even think about worrying about CJS vs ESM vs AMD vs UMD vs SystemJS vs …, just include this one <script> and reference $ to your heart’s content.

BB(5) is known to be 47,176,870, or 10110011111101110010100110 in base 2.

aphantastic··on Mozilla is eliminating its advocacy division
Go for it. But based on reaction to my prior comment it looks like everyone wants someone to drop everything and dedicate their life to a web browser, but nobody wants to do it themselves.

Trick is to start some sort of commune in Colombia and attract talent with the local amenities. Nice private community full of 10-15 software engineers, private chefs, security, etc would be less than $1-2k/month per person. Maybe turn it into a vacation spot: “tired of your work? Take 6 month sabbatical to come party in LATAM while making meaningful software. Work hard/play hard - apply by linking to the most meaningful PR you have contributed to an FOSS project.”

Honestly not a bad plan.

aphantastic··on The US Navy Put Cameras on Dolphins and the Results Were Wild
Dolphins swimming into bays is actually somewhat common. If you spend a few hours every day on the water, you’re likely to see a few dolphins every year.
aphantastic··on Weird Lexical Syntax
> Is it even possible to support generalized string interpolation within a strictly regular lexical grammar?

Almost certainly not, a fun exercise is to attempt to devise a Pumping tactic for your proposed language. If it doesn’t exist, it’s not regular.

aphantastic··on Cooking with black plastic is particularly crucial to avoid
Care to elaborate? I don’t see any connection between the two.
aphantastic··on Cooking with black plastic is particularly crucial to avoid
There’s a spectrum of insensitivity, all the way from “I’ll die” (celiac), to “I get migraines/etc.” (classically insensitive), to “if I have a lot I feel real bad” (perhaps more folks than they realize).

Pancake batter is characterized by lots of flour and baking soda, if it’s not one it’s likely the other.

There exist truly exceptional gluten free waffle recipes^, might be worth a shot at least.

The bone broth waffle here would be a good search root (you’ll pardon the colorful menu, I hope): https://coffeedose.cafe/pages/flagship-menu

^ I’m not even gluten free typically

aphantastic··on How to get the whole planet to send abuse complaints to your best friends
This is almost certainly it. There’s a lot of head-sand-burying around here about just how easily an attacker with access to logs of a not-even-that-large segment of the nodes can gain visibility into individuals’ service access patterns.

aphantastic··on New iMac with M4
My parents have had an iMac in their living room sitting quietly doing stuff (web apps, mainly) for 9 years now. Still works fine for all their use cases and the 5k screen remains a delight to behold.
aphantastic··on How 'Factorio' seduced Silicon Valley and me
Mindusry scratches the same itch, but in perhaps a slightly more appealing way for me at least. Rather than the entire game being dedicated to creating one massive monolith dedicated to the one goal of rocket building or whatever, there are many different levels each where you’re just playing classic tower defense and using the layout of the map to your advantage to extract resources and kill bad guys. It’s casual and FOSS.

Yes, some luxury products are little lore than a brand icon tiled to cover the entirety of a poorly made hand bag. I agree.

But that’s not what we’re talking about here. We’re talking about the preeminent fabric/leather/composite composing studio in the world with a long history of creating military, sporting, racing, and yes: fashion goods. They have a fully in house production pipeline and complete control over every step of the process, something unique to them across all of the boutiques. They additionally have a long history of creating new and unique patterns for their prices, and are arguably the most knowledgeable folks on the plant when it comes to designing cuts for optimal 3D shape, flexibility, and long term performance.

But don’t just take my word for it, consider what an actual astronaut who has spent 1,200+ hours in space and used suits like this for life support while floating hundreds of miles above the earth’s surface performing critical repairs to Hubble and many other scientific instruments says:

> Prada has considerable experience with various types of composite fabrics and may actually be able to make some real technical contributions to the outer layers of the new space suit

I’ll take that over 100+ year old ramblings from a time when folks thought artisans hand stitching every garment was the baseline.

You missed the last sentence where I explicitly stated that other companies could produce similar products, but it’d very likely be more expensive and less functional?

I’m sure we could spin up some other custom suit production facility, but it wouldn’t save us money vs using the existing fully in-house pipelines already battle-tested by the industry leaders.

I was about to say the same. At a time when the plurality of kids want to be YouTubers when they grow up^, I can’t help but feel that more investment into the “cool factor” of STEM would not be misplaced. What kind of impact would kids across the nation seeing astronauts decked out in head to toe custom Prada have on the future of our domestic research&development efforts? It’s hard to quantify, but I imagine it has to be more than whatever the minuscule additional cost a bit of flair on the space suits might add to the program.

Novel pattern work and top of the line quality in manufacturing? Probably your local Prada boutique would be a good start. Or prada.com barring that.
aphantastic··on Artemis moon suit designed by Axiom Space and Prada revealed in Milan
Lot of people here talking trash on this probably don’t know the history or even current status of Prada. In short they are absolute top of the line when it comes to everything from the pattern work to the actual nuts and bolts of manufacturing this sort of thing. Any other company would very likely take more time and money to produce and inferior product.
aphantastic··on Blocking code is a leaky abstraction
Doesn’t change the core issue, which is that if you want to do multiple operations simultaneously that take time to execute, you’re going to need to write stuff to handle that which you wouldn’t otherwise. Whether it’s channel piping or async awaiting is semantics.
aphantastic··on Express v5
That could work. Probably it’d be a very easy bit of middleware/express extension to write, it’s basically just wrapping the existing writeHeader, write, end, in the hot new syntax. Probably you’d get some benefits in composability, and lose some performance in the extreme.
aphantastic··on New Mersenne Prime discovered (probably)
My favorite “Practical POW” remains komoglorav complexity computation. The reward would likely scale with the runtime needed to verify a complexity, but there’s plenty of room for subtleties in the implementation. (for instance what happens when you prove a prior established complexity wrong?)
aphantastic··on Express v5
Not that perfectly. You still have the question of how to represent the one-time header data.
