[RocksDB](https://rocksdb.org/) isn’t a distributed storage system, fwiw. It’s an embedded KV engine similar to LevelDB, LMDB, or really sqlite (though that’s full SQL, not just KV)
apgwoz··on Candy – a minimalistic functional programming language
> Personally I prefer gradual type systems that need less up front wrestling so that the coding process is more productive, more time can be spent on tuning the design rather than “finally I made it work” acceptance of compiler driven design.

If your style is to hack hack hack until it’s right, yeah, types are challenging. If your style is to think first about types, you can also create guardrails in your code that naturally create the correct thing.

Static vs Dynamic vs Gradual… it’s really more a question of “how does my brain like to get to a solution and keep it functioning” and I find that fascinating.

apgwoz··on Tiny, tamper-proof ID tag can authenticate almost anything
That’s already happening. If companies want to be assholes, we should boycott the company and demand they change. Things are worse than printer ink. Soon, I’ll have to subscribe to turn the heat on in my car.

I still want an authentic pacemaker.

apgwoz··on Tiny, tamper-proof ID tag can authenticate almost anything
If this can help ensure that I have, say, an authentic pacemaker, and not a counterfeit, I’ll accept it.

eyeroll you got me
apgwoz··on Proposed Oklahoma skyscraper gets redesign to become USA's new tallest building
Highly doubt? We’re in the midst of the biggest cultural clash in the US since the civil war, where the midwest is flanked on both sides of the country by liberal states/cities.

There’s no question that developer isn’t doing this only out of spite—the need for space must be there, but imagine the board room scene in the movie…

Architect/Urban planning: “we’ve designed a unique promenade with a four building complex, one that is primarily housing, next to shopping and office. A true “never leave your block” lifestyle with urban green space…

Developer: “I’m gonna stop y’all right there. Let’s put up the tallest tower in the US to tell everyone watch out! OKC is back and ready for action! Just give the rest of those woke cities the biggest salute you can imagine!”

Come on. The story writes itself!

apgwoz··on Proposed Oklahoma skyscraper gets redesign to become USA's new tallest building
They should just make it look like a tornado, honestly. Then it makes more sense. “We’re constantly bombarded with tornados in OK, and this serves as a monument and reminder of the seriousness of that,” said developer, now actually making any sense.
apgwoz··on Proposed Oklahoma skyscraper gets redesign to become USA's new tallest building
Maybe it’s an intentional “middle finger” to the other US cities. Why else would you choose OKC for the tallest skyscraper? Literal dick measuring contest.
apgwoz··on OpenD, a D language fork that is open to your contributions
Looks like there’s an update https://dpldocs.info/this-week-in-d/Blog.Posted_2024_01_08.h... and they’ve gotten some interest.

Personally, I think it’d have been more fun if they named it ‘Died’ — you get the benefits of sweet taglines “It never Died,” a statement about it being a fork, and the permission to take the language in new directions if that makes sense in the future. OpenD implies full compatibility, etc..

(I have no skin in this game, though. Good luck!)

This is essentially Global Thermonuclear War, right?
apgwoz··on Show HN: YouTube banned adblockers so I built an extension to skip their ads
This. For some corporate training sites they do this, which makes watching at 2x useless since you just have wait silently… but if you’re me, you get distracted, go do something else and then come back a month later when the nag email tells you you need to do the training.
apgwoz··on Show HN: Tome, aka Tom's Editor – a new command-line text editor
It's pretty hard to find a name that isn't already _something else_. Not impossible, but hard. Your tome.app at least isn't an editor, so...
apgwoz··on Rockstar is selling cracked game copies on Steam
Oh, you "didn't" do this game, wink wink, nudge nudge. ;)
apgwoz··on Goodreads is terrible for books – why can’t we all quit it?
Has anyone tried https://thestorygraph.com/ as an alternative? I don’t read enough to want something like this, but I remember hearing about the story of this in the CoRecursive Podcast (https://corecursive.com/the-story-graph-with-nadia-odunayo/)
apgwoz··on Hydra: Column-Oriented Postgres
All of Citus is AGPL, so either MSFT bought it like that, or it made it like that. Either way, embracing the AGPL was not on my MSFT bingo card.
apgwoz··on Hydra: Column-Oriented Postgres
How far we’ve come for MSFT to have a project (Citus, which Hydra forks from) released under the AGPL.
apgwoz··on Show HN: My husband quit his job to build a new social audio app with Flutter
It took about 3 clicks of a play button to find a fem voiced person lacking a romantic / sexual connection with someone, and I have to imagine even with the best of intentions, at scale, this becomes "lead gen for cam folx".

What are the plans to prevent the "adult industry-ification" of an otherwise pretty interesting project?

apgwoz··on The 'eval' pattern for interpreting simple languages
You can definitely implement language features poorly and in hard to maintain, “against the grain” ways in most languages. Lots of languages support multiple ways, sometimes, of doing so!
apgwoz··on The 'eval' pattern for interpreting simple languages
We went in a circle. The article does this. The parent comment says “use sum types.” I said “most languages don’t have direct support” and now you’re repeating the article.

My favorite recent channel is called “Boring Sailing,” which the algorithm served up, but has very few subscribers. It’s actually—truly—been boring to watch, at times, but you have to root for him!

“Wilding sailing,” on the other hand, is a much more ambitious labor fest, with the boat owner restoring a catamaran he bought for 2k Euros. That’s been inspiring, entertaining, and really worth subscribing to.

apgwoz··on She Steals Surfboards by the Seashore. She’s a Sea Otter
Just what we need, more kooks on Wavestorms in the water!

(Explanation for non-surf adjacent folks: kook is a “n00b” and Wavestorm is a brand of foam boards that you used to be able to buy at Costco for $99 or whatever. Forget the fact that they are actually quite capable boards and many really good surfers will paddle out on them, it became a symbol of good surfers having a bad day dodging people who can’t surf. Note: I am most definitely a kook / horrible surfer who doesn’t anymore, but never actually owned a Wavestorm)

apgwoz··on InfluxDB Cloud shuts down in Belgium; some weren't notified before data deletion
> After that we make best efforts but if people can’t respond to vendors they pay money to, we’re really at a loss.

I can empathize with this, but also would expect a good product organization to consider failure modes here and work around them.

Did anyone consider that bob@company.com left months ago, but since autopay still works, no one considered potential problems?

Did anyone consider Bob in accounting is paying the bill but ignores email that doesn’t have “balance due” in it?

… and a million other scenarios that are quite likely and need consideration.

apgwoz··on I'm a paid user of Threads[.com] – No trademark?
Meta launched a twitter clone called Threads. An existing chat application (in the Slack vein) is called Threads. Meta’s Threads might infringe on the other Threads’ trademark in the US.
apgwoz··on Failing to draw lines between ‘script’ and ‘program’
I work with people who write “scripts” in Go. Pretty sure these terms were once important—a program was assembled. A script was a set of things you’d otherwise do by hand (eg run these 30 commands).

“Scripting languages” that created more abstraction power blurred the lines. But, I still think a script is something you’d lazily do, otherwise by hand, without the script

apgwoz··on Reddit is removing moderators that protest by taking their communities private
Hacker News is written in arc. The first reddit was written in Common Lisp. clisp, specifically, I believe.

Aaron convinced them to do it in his web.py and it was rewritten in a weekend (or so the story went). Later, it was written in Pylons and open sourced. No idea these days.
