apersona··on Amazon is stuffing its search results pages with ads
How would you solve the counterfeit goods and preventing people from gaming the review system problems?

It seems like a hard problem - eBay suffered from this too for their goods,Yelp with reviews. I doubt it's just a "I don't care" kind of thing.

apersona··on Tesla Accounting Chief, HR Head Resign on the Same Day; Stock Plunges
> "Disinformation"; that's laughable. Tesla and Musk are being sued and investigated for stock manipulation, but you're crying about Reuters being off on their prediction. Who is showing bias? Where is the outrage?

I never understand how this is a legit argument.

Just because one party shows disinformation doesn't make another party's disinformation right.

apersona··on Consider applying for grad school
You do know that most group supervisors have graduate degrees right? (At least at JPL, not sure about other NASA centers). Seniority tends to be based on your highest level of education (obviously there are exceptions - but exceptions are exceptions because they're rare, not the norm).

There's no "single PhDless engineer" who engineers a whole spacecraft.

apersona··on Apple and Google Face Growing Revolt Over App Store ‘Tax’
That's an interesting idea. It might even encourage developers to work on higher quality apps, or to not devalue their own software.
apersona··on Apple and Google Face Growing Revolt Over App Store ‘Tax’
What? They're complaining about Valve too.

Bethesda, for example, recently announced that they're launching Fallout 76 on their own personal launcher (https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2018/08/fallout-76s-pc-versio...).

I've noticed this trend in the game industry. Any game company that is large enough will work on their own launcher (look at Blizzard, Epic Games, EA, etc.)

What other work have you done though?

From my experience, it seems like a lot of web dev people struggle with OS/Compilers/Embedded/Robotics work, but people who don't struggle with OS/Compilers/Embedded/Robotics work tend to handle web dev just fine.

Why is that? The only explanation I can think of is because the work is easier (easier, not trivial).

(Note: I don't think a web developer (or anyone) should be considered a "lower class" of coder, but saying web dev is the hardest and most intimidating dev work feels untrue).

apersona··on Sex Scandal Toppled a Silicon Valley Chief. Investors Say, So What?
I think if there's a difference in power, the person on the lower end should have a way to say no to his/her boss's advances. I think the culture today where you can talk to the media about it is a valid option and the boss should be punished for it.

But I think banning all relationships between a boss and subordinate is stupid. Someone close to me got into a relationship with their boss a few years ago. The problems my friend was facing wasn't that they felt forced into it, instead, what my friend talks about is how it was everyone OUTSIDE of their relationship that's making them uncomfortable. Some of my friend's coworkers think that they didn't get into a relationship because of romantic reasons, but because of financial reasons (but in a more blunt and straight up insulting way). It's frustrating how people are so judgmental (even in different ways) just because of the position the two have.

apersona··on Sex Scandal Toppled a Silicon Valley Chief. Investors Say, So What?
I don't think putting constraints on when and where sexual propositioning is the right way.

The root of the problem is the fear of losing one's job. I think what should happen is that anyone can say "no" to an advance without fear of repercussions, not forming moral laws for where you can/can't form romantic relationships.

What did I just read?

This feels like a "that happened" post:

> He looked at me as if I’d just shot Santa Claus in the face.

> “No, man! You’re wrong!” He was sweating now, and the dozen or so musicians who’d gathered around us began heckling him. He shouted, “Spotify is our product! You don’t get it at all!” He stormed off.

apersona··on The tech sector might be evil
You can't deny that lots of innovations came from defense research. APARNET came from the DoD. I personally wouldn't want to work in defense, but I wouldn't disrepect people working in there either.
apersona··on The tech sector might be evil
What's wrong with unnecessary innovations? There were lots of inventions/discoveries that didn't solve any existing problem during their time of discovery.
apersona··on The tech sector might be evil
very much this. I think the how people view companies as a whole as "evil" is alarming. Technology is neutral, and companies make the world better and worse.

apersona··on Germany, in a First, Shuts Down Left-Wing Extremist Website
Yes, all violence. Just because I don't support left-wing violence doesn't mean that I support whatever the left-wing is fighting against.

That's what I hate about politics nowadays - it's either you're agree with us on everything or we immediately assume that you disagree with us on everything.

apersona··on Why I’m Frustrated with Go
I don't see why it's surprising to see a game programming library binding for Rust. I was drawn to it because it was advertised as a "systems programming" language. From a graphics perspective, this means that it's trying to be fast and gives me good control over low level stuff.

apersona··on MIT Gets $140M Pledge from Anonymous Donor
> But one of the claims for this argument that a huge donation suddenly doesn't turn a bad school into a good one is a strawman argument. Things don't have to be so extreme. There are plenty of middle tier schools specially state schools

Yeah, but it sounds like you're also making the assumption that state schools don't get endowments either. I'm from a state school and the last campaign we had raised ~$20M. Admittedly, it's not even close to the pledge, but it's not like state schools are getting absolutely no funding either.

apersona··on MIT Gets $140M Pledge from Anonymous Donor
But...it's not the degree, it's the knowledge that's important.

MIT, Stanford, and a decent amount of other institutions have made their lectures available for free online. Almost anyone can go online now and watch the lectures and do the projects that the students do.

How would testing centers and degrees make them better scientists in anyway?

apersona··on Secretive Billionaire Makes The Cheese For Pizza Hut, Domino's And Papa John's
Leprino not giving his chief engineer/scientist any equity at all is definitely not a small fault. I can see why ShabbosGoy might say Leprino is worthy of scorn.

"I would tell people,'Lester is the man that made me rich,' " Leprino says. Notably, though, Leprino never gave Kielsmeier any equity. While Leprino got rich, Kielsmeier — who came to work every day right until his death at 95 in 2012--would have to content himself with being very well paid."

apersona··on My Kid Will Never Hack Linux
I don't think it's about suffering yesterday's problems to understand today's. Learning to program in C made me a better programmer because I had to watch out for memory, etc. I think a better analogy would be how even with modern animation software, great animators still recommend being able to draw well with pencil and paper ("lower level", slower) to develop a sense for the nuances of animation.

Bullshit. What about the site (voat something?) that tried to be an alternative to reddit when there was some scandal there but couldn't keep users because they kept crashing?
