antoviaque··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2020)
REMOTE (Worldwide) - Open Source Developer on Open edX - React, Python/Django, AWS/OpenStack (OpenCraft - Fully remote company)

Development specialized on the free software project Open edX, used by and in part developed by organizations like MIT, Harvard, McKinsey, and others, so you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to projects that are widely used and to be part of a thriving open source educational community. See edx.org, stanford.edu or fun-mooc.fr for examples of Open edX instances.

We are 27 senior developers, all working remotely from Europe, North & South America, Asia & Australia. The company is not affiliated with edX, but rather contributing and working with them on various projects. This is a full time position, where you would be able to work remotely from anywhere you want, as long as you have a good internet connection. : )

The Open edX platform is a large Python/Django codebase, with good code standards and architecture. You would work on different clients contracts using the platform. The clients list/references include Harvard, MIT, edX themselves, the French government, and various startups & universities currently running their own instances, or looking to create one. Tasks are very varied, from developing core platform features, custom exercises and tools for specific courses (XBlocks), customizing and deploying instances, working fullstack, operating our service infrastructure, improving our hosting platform, etc. You won't get bored here.

Most of your work is published as free software (Open edX is released under the AGPL license, which requires clients to release modifications under the same license), and you would also contribute to the free software project, pushing most of your developments upstream through pull requests, contributing features, documentation or help on mailing-lists.

We welcome applicants of all genders and ethnicities.

You can read more about how we work in our handbook, at https://handbook.opencraft.com/

Stack: Python/Django, Ansible, AWS/OpenStack, React, Debian/Ubuntu, MySQL, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, RabbitMQ, Redis, Elasticsearch, JS, HTML/CSS.

Nice to haves: Terraform, Vault, Packer, Prometheus, ELK, Docker, Android/iOS. We are building a modern infrastructure and having a strong DevOps presence on top of core software engineering skills is a big plus with us.

Interview process: a 30 minutes Hangout with a (simple) coding exercise.

To apply, fill this form: https://opencraft.com/jobs/open-source-developer/

antoviaque··on Ask HN: Best books you read in the past decade?
As a Game of Thrones fan who likes history, I've loved to read the Accursed Kings from Maurice Druon. I just couldn't let go of the book once I started - I wish schools taught history like that!

The series of books has largely inspired George R. R. Martin's novels, and you will recognize many character traits, as well as the trademark realistic scenario, where main characters also die a lot... Unlike A Song of Fire and Ice, it is based on actual European history, and is fairly accurate - so no nightwalkers or dragons, but it is every bit as epic a saga.

REMOTE (Worldwide) - Open Source DevOps & Developer on Open edX - OpenStack/AWS, Python, Django (OpenCraft - Fully remote company)

DevOps operations and development of related automation software on the free software project Open edX. The project is used by and in part developed by organizations like MIT, Harvard, McKinsey, and others, so you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to projects that are widely used and to be part of a thriving open source educational community. See edx.org, stanford.edu or fun-mooc.fr for examples of Open edX instances.

We are looking for experienced DevOps specialists, to help improve and scale our infrastructure. We host many instances of Open edX, and have developed open source automation software based on OpenStack and Python/Django to scale it, and allow users to spin their own instance by themselves. We are looking to refactor some of its components, including moving to Terraform and Packer, as well as supporting additional platforms such as AWS.

We are a team of twenty developers, all working remotely from Europe, North & South America, Asia & Australia. You would arrive at a critical moment, as we scale up to handle increasing demand from clients on the edX platform. The company is not affiliated with edX, but contributing and working with them on various projects. This is a full time position, were you would be able to work remotely from anywhere you want, as long as you have a good internet connexion. : )

The Open edX platform itself is a large Python/Django codebase, with good code standards and architecture. You would also work on different clients contracts using the platform, which can include both DevOps operations and fullstack Python/Django/JS development. The clients list/references include Harvard, MIT, edX themselves, the French government, and various startups & universities currently running their own instances, or looking to create one.

Most of your work is published as free software (Open edX is released under the AGPL license, which requires clients to release modifications under the same license), and you would also contribute to the free software project, pushing most of your developments upstream through pull requests, contributing features, documentation or help on mailing-lists.

antoviaque··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2019)
We sometimes take slightly more junior profiles, but it's usually very demanding on the person joining. The level of quality and efficiency required by the projects is high, so those who succeeded were the ones able to ramp up their skills quickly, and ready to invest the necessary effort. Generally, it might be an easier approach to gain experience on other projects first, and then join -- but if you are up for a challenge, you're still welcome to apply :)
antoviaque··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2019)
Here is a good place :) If you have any question I'll be happy to answer them publicly - this way it can also help others. If it's something private, you can write to me (xavier@opencraft.com).
antoviaque··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2019)
Yes if you have them, or equivalent URLs where we can see your contributions to projects - we review them when we look at your application.

Good to know, thanks for the note. I assumed this was fine because we do get candidates from both audiences - we hire for full time gigs, but a lot of the applicants are freelancers, and keep doing some other smaller gigs on the side. We don't have a clear separation between freelancers and full timers internally, given the remote & flexible schedule approach.
