antonioevans··on Amazon moves into Mapping
I was at their NYTM Preso, shocked they are selling for so low. We're in the local market and every article of maps company acquisitions I read, I always assumed it would be them.
antonioevans··on To Elon Musk and the Model S: Congratulations
Can't wait to do a test drive of the car.
antonioevans··on Facebook To Let Advertisers Bid on Your Browser Data
I think people in hacker community are always way too afraid of where privacy is going. We should all understand, it's gone already. Facebook's remarketing is same as Google + Bing. Notice all those Tigerdirect ads. Personally I like ads on sites. They tend to be related content and helps site owners monetize. I think the conversation shouldn't be best way to stop cookie tracking but how to control what you want out there in a single place. It's really crappy to have to worry about privacy settings on hundreds of websites. I don't want to use the web on privacy mode.
antonioevans··on Reddit bans The Atlantic, Businessweek, others in major anti-spam move
I tend to post to reddit from my website once every few weeks when the article is specifically good and "redditable". I would hope that is not a potential ban target.

What probably is happening is that theatlantic / businessweek had a group of up voters that they paid (staff) that would constantly manipulate the voting.

antonioevans··on US and Israel created Stuxnet, lost control of it
No one has said how they fully downed that supposed Stealth Drone.
antonioevans··on US and Israel created Stuxnet, lost control of it
Iran (and a few other countries we know) is historically known for fighting war by proxy. Suicide bomber here, assassination there, dollars flowing to multiple heavily armed anti-Israel groups.

Also on top of this what would be Russia + China's reaction be to a physical attack on one of their allies. Heck what would be the price of oil? $150 a barrel?

antonioevans··on What does it feel like to be the CEO of a start-up?
As a founder of a self funded start-up this piece felt a bit like ESP.
antonioevans··on US and Israel created Stuxnet, lost control of it
If Israel had physically bombed the Iranian plant would that not started another major war in the Middle East? I am not saying this is an elegant solution to cross border conflict but war was avoided.

Everyone in the hacker community knows this was coming. This is going to get much worst before it gets better. Power outages in Brazil, China/Google event last year, and stuxnet.

As the article says: "Stuxnet is old news by now. Even the newly discovered "Flame" malware was developed some time ago. While details about these two targeted attack packages are finally emerging, the next generation of attack tools has no doubt been developed and likely deployed."

antonioevans··on The great Verizon FiOS ripoff
With wireless speeds approaching the speeds of most wired carriers this makes sense. Build for the future vs putting a huge investment into a plant that isn't really scalable.
antonioevans··on Ask HN: It's 2012, what database solution do you now pick for a Web 2.0 site?
I think patio11 give great advice. Pick one that your founding team is comfortable with but I have a few suggestions.

If you are going to bring in off shore guys/gals it will be hard to find them proficient in some of the newer dbs. So the learning curve and cost inefficiencies maybe create a lost of momentum (time) for you. If I were to build my framework from scratch I would probably still use MySQL for certain thing but definitely move to a NoSQL (mongodb/dynamodb).

antonioevans··on Google's Self-Driving Car Gets Mixed Reviews
I live in NYC and the best use-case for this is taxis. Taxi do not take the same route twice. Traffic is a nightmare during different seasonal, temporal, or accident events. So like a Garmin device it should be able to "remap" the trip.

In our lifetimes this will be possible but maybe not in next 1-3 years. (I hope I am wrong)

antonioevans··on Hedge Funder Who Bet $100 Million On Facebook IPO Is Furious
To plenty of us in the tech field a successful Facebook IPO would have opened up a path for other tech business to IPO in the near term. On top of that a successful IPO would have opened up some funding in our hacker space (Paypal Mafia/Google Mafia..etc). We want them to be successful.
