antisemiotic··on DeepFaceLab: A tool that utilizes ML to replace faces in videos
Porn.
antisemiotic··on Ask HN: are pwd managers more secure?
You can use a local password manager like pwsafe, that way someone would have to hack into your computers first, and then break pwsafe's encryption (which is of course impossible, since it was written by Bruce Schneier).

It's more of a pain to use than web password managers, but less than a piece of paper. I'd still recommend writing down the master password, since if you lose it you're screwed.

antisemiotic··on More UFOs Than Ever Before
Humans have a history of occasionally choosing bad fitness functions that predates computers, for example look at the awful things we've done to persian cats or chihuahua dogs.
antisemiotic··on The growing science of memory manipulation
Plot twist: you're actually a moderator for Facebook looking at child porn and beheadings all day. Further plot twist: that FB gig was another fake memory to cover up your involvement in a secret government project involving lots of enhanced interrogation, to provide plausible cause for the psychological damage that wasn't entirely fixed by memory replacement.
antisemiotic··on Generating natural-sounding synthetic speech using brain activity
Surely that won't be the only option, and you'll be able to run, say, Arch Linux on your implant. Just be sure to read the news before a full system upgrade, lest you end up in a coma and need a hard reboot with a live usb image.
antisemiotic··on Ask HN: Why is Google in love with purposely-impaired languages like Go, Dart?
>Coming to Go after Python was not only a joy, but I was able to easily implement concurrency and improve the performance of my game of life simulation side project by something like 25x.

Python is notoriously bad at both these things though, so it's not a very high bar. I think a more meaningful comparison would be to languages like Clojure, Erlang/Elixir, Rust, or any other that has concurrency as one of the top priories, but makes different tradeoffs.

antisemiotic··on Arabic and Islamic Themes in Frank Herbert's “Dune” (2004-2017)
On a tangential note, your post reminded me that I should go read "How to talk about books you haven't read", at least for the peace of mind, if not anything else.
antisemiotic··on Depression, anxiety rising among U.S. college students
I think Zerzan was on to something with his claim that things took a nosedive after the invention of symbolic language.
antisemiotic··on Our Quest for Faster Boot Times and Offline Support
I don't buy it. Slack is, supposedly, a product for professionals (I think the non-professional lunch was eaten by Discord already). Professionals communicating at work would benefit from RAM and CPU being left alone much more than from animations and other fluff.
antisemiotic··on Our Quest for Faster Boot Times and Offline Support
>rapid growth, is/was the first priority above all else, including "technical excellence"

That's the modus operandi of many unpleasant things like bacteria or cancer cells, why should it be commendable on its own?

antisemiotic··on exFAT in the Linux kernel
Being awful is Skype's killer feature. You can't carpet-bomb with pings, you can't comfortably copy and paste code or logs into it, half of devs who use linux don't bother running it on a VM and instead use flaky third-party clients, it eats messages randomly, so long story short - people generally avoid it except for trivial shit. And on the odd day when they don't, I get a copy on Outlook anyway.

I've read some horror stories about Slack, and I shudder to think what would happen if my company moved to it.

antisemiotic··on exFAT in the Linux kernel
To each his own, in my opinion consumer market for laptops being a trash fire doesn't excuse putting malware on them.
antisemiotic··on exFAT in the Linux kernel
"We are a totally trustworthy company, we screw only some of our customers."
antisemiotic··on BMW unveils “blackest black” car sprayed with Vantablack
their headlights.
antisemiotic··on Ask HN: What problems do you see worth solving in 2019-2020?
Whether P=NP.
antisemiotic··on WTF – A personal information dashboard for your terminal
You mean it's shameful to receive money directly from the users, and respectable people must have an intermediary for it?
antisemiotic··on A mobile phone that respects your freedom [video]
Looks like a ritual to protect against nasal demons.
antisemiotic··on The Provocations of Camille Paglia
Humans and cats, actually.
antisemiotic··on North American versus European distribution systems (2011)
I'm not from UK, but having seen the UK plug, I think that the most common injuries it causes would be blunt trauma and possibly stabbings.
antisemiotic··on Dyson Tree
Just remember to remove any baobabs you see, these can get nasty real quick.
antisemiotic··on Complex quantum teleportation achieved for the first time
This is exactly what "quantum teleportation" means and it has never meant anything else. "Beam me up" is pure fantasy.
antisemiotic··on Burnout – All-in-one workspace for startups
I'm not sure if I'm not responding seriously to satire, but are you aware of what "burnout" means?

From https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/burnout :

"Definition of burnout

1 : the cessation of operation usually of a jet or rocket engine also : the point at which burnout occurs

2a : exhaustion of physical or emotional strength or motivation usually as a result of prolonged stress or frustration

b : a person suffering from burnout

3 : a person showing the effects of drug abuse"

I mean, by the looks of the landing page, I guess (3) could fit somewhat?

If you think satire layers cancel out, you clearly haven't spent enough time on the internet.
antisemiotic··on Productivity and the Workweek (2000)
Finally I can ditch the portable black hole I was using for work hour dilatation.
antisemiotic··on The body is the missing link for truly intelligent machines (2017)
>What I find somewhat ironic is this: the author mentions working with Stephen Hawking, an amazing man who produced incredible intellectual work and enriched our understanding of reality while being almost incapable of any physicality.

Not from birth though. I wouldn't dismiss the impact of being able to interact with the world during childhood so easily.

antisemiotic··on Researcher banned on Valve's bug bounty program publishes second Steam 0-day
If Microsoft considered privilege escalation to be serious, they wouldn't have Windows setup a single privileged account on a fresh install. Or at the very least, they wouldn't make it necessary to jump through two hidden hoops to make a separate admin account without (a) a Microsoft profile and (b) without "secure questions" misfeature.
antisemiotic··on Bringing Serverless to a Web Page Near You with Hugo and Kubernetes
What do you think about "fabless" semiconductor companies, then?
antisemiotic··on Rendering on the Web
Sorry then, I guess I have no idea what this discussion was about in the first place. Why would anyone care about the build tools of someone else's site if it doesn't affect the user?
antisemiotic··on Rendering on the Web
Wouldn't it be easier to just use a static site generator for a simple site like this, though?
antisemiotic··on Rendering on the Web
It seems to work fine under umatrix set to "kill everything but first-party images and css".
