anticodon··on Django: what’s new in 6.0
Django had ORM from the very beginning. I've been using Django since 0.95 at it had ORM even back then. It was primitive but I hadn't to resort to raw SQL until much later.
anticodon··on CATL expects oceanic electric ships in three years
Wouldn't it be much easier than to put micro reactors on a ship directly? Like on Russian icebreakers that can function on one load of fuel for 3 or 5 years, don't remember exactly but at least 3 years for sure.
anticodon··on Jakarta is now the biggest city in the world
Infrastructure is not only cars/buses. It is also: roads (paved roads), electricity lines, water pipes, bus stops, traffic lights (you won't find many traffic lights in SEA countries), train stations, railroads, etc.

It's evident if you live for several months in almost any SEA city, that they lack even basic infrastructure. I'm sure it's not only matter of negligence, they simply cannot afford many things that people in developed countries see as granted.

anticodon··on Jakarta is now the biggest city in the world
Infrastructure is expensive. It costs lots of resources and human labor and intricate planning (most SE Asia cities are not looking like anything there was planned).

Most countries on the planet simply cannot afford good infrastructure. I'm almost sure there's not even enough resources like energy and metals to create a good infrastructure in every country on Earth.

anticodon··on Async and Finaliser Deadlocks
Yep, a __del__ in the redis client code caused almost random deadlocks at my job for several years. Manual intervention was required to restart stuck Celery jobs. Took me about 2-3 weeks to find the culprit (had to deploy python interpreter compiled with debug info into production, wait for deadlock to happen again, attach with gdb and find where it happens). One of the most difficult production issues I had to solve in my life (because it happened randomly and it was impossible to even remotely guess what is causing it).
anticodon··on Yt-dlp: External JavaScript runtime now required for full YouTube support
I routinely review my pics and vigorously delete all duplicates or poor quality images. It helps if you do this for 10-15 minutes every day. At least I'm able to find most of the pictures I remember I took, and I don't have to scroll through 1000 snaps of some particular sunset to do that.
anticodon··on US nuclear weapons testing can forever scar a nation.Just ask Marshall Island
It seems young Japanese doesn't even know who bombed their country. US controls most of the world media: they can highlight or hide any fact, or inculcate whatever interpretation.
anticodon··on From VS Code to Helix
> Commands like a for appending text are unchanged from the teletype era

I don't find these commands a historical baggage. They're quite useful even today. Also commands like A, I, P, O in vim are super-useful when recording macros (macros are easier to record and more robust because they less depend on the context where they would be run).

anticodon··on Mysterious Intrigue Around an x86 "Corporate Entity Other Than Intel/AMD"
It seems there's only software emulation of x86 on Elbrus.
anticodon··on Mysterious Intrigue Around an x86 "Corporate Entity Other Than Intel/AMD"
There's only Russian (Soviet) clone of 8086. There was some finished work on cloning 286 but they were never produced in series, since USSR collapsed.
anticodon··on DOJ seizes $15B in Bitcoin from 'pig butchering' scam based in Cambodia
Those are democratic bombs bringing freedom. Can't be a bad thing.
anticodon··on DOJ seizes $15B in Bitcoin from 'pig butchering' scam based in Cambodia
Cambodia is a small country with no natural resources of any kind. Even to grow rice you need diesel for tractors and fertilizers that are produced from natural gas using energy (which Cambodia lacks).

There's very few opportunities for a small country without resources.

anticodon··on Scaling request logging with ClickHouse, Kafka, and Vector
Or vice versa: make ClickHouse ingest batches directly from Kafka. Messages are already buffered in Kafka, I don't get why Vector is necessary here.
anticodon··on Django: One ORM to rule all databases
But why? Although I have way more experience with Django ORM, I find that SQLAlchemy is closer to SQL and I have to think less how to express complex queries. With Django ORM changing a few characters can change resulting query from LEFT JOIN to INNER JOIN, for example. I find it more difficult to write complex queries in Django ORM.
anticodon··on Ask HN: Abandoned/dead projects you think died before their time and why?
Plone CMS. When it appeared in 2001, there was nothing comparable. I'm not sure there still is. It was very flexible, allowed to build complex websites from components. Many ideas were pretty novel, at least I've never seen them in any web framework/CMS before. It still exists but nowhere as popular as it was in 2000-2010s.
anticodon··on I still love PHP and JavaScript (2022)
I don't understand. The point of my comment was that from my experience PHP code always has worse quality than code written in other programming languages. It's a broad assumption and I have no proofs. But it is my experience, I've never seen exceptions. Any PHP codebase I've looked at, had lots of issues with code readability, maintainability, robustness, security.

I think it was a huge mistake to allow mixing code and HTML. On the other hand, without this feature, PHP probably wouldn't become popular at all.

anticodon··on I still love PHP and JavaScript (2022)
Last time I touched PHP in 2018. It was a website my company bought from a french developer. After many unsuccessful attempts to add even basic functionality to the site, I announced my employer that they paid for the domain and the audience, but the code has to be rewritten from scratch.

It was typical PHP mix of HTML and PHP code in one file, an unreadable sequence of several crazy long HTML lines, then several lines of PHP code, then again HTML.

Lots of copy paste.

SQL statements were created by concatenation of user input with the text of the query. In 2018.

Back then I promised I'll never ever touch any PHP code. Live pretty much happily since then. I know there's some typing added to the language and other modern features. Still pretty sure, that if I open any random PHP file from any random PHP project, I'll still find the same mess as ever before.

anticodon··on Formatting code should be unnecessary
Yes. In Python, black formatter consistently breaks SQLAlchemy queries in an unreadable way (e.g. splitting conditions over multiple lines when it's not really necessary and makes reading harder).
anticodon··on The world has a running Rational R1000/400 computer again (2019)
ClearCase is the worst VCS software that I ever used in my life. Maybe in the beginning of 90s it was better than existing alternatives, but I was using it well in 2000s, and it was horrible experience compared to already existing Git, Mercurial and even Subversion.

And if you add the cost (around $5000 per workplace), it becomes even less understandable.

It also required a designated CC admin or several admins.

anticodon··on Grok Code Fast 1
The fact is that China is one of the largest foreign USA debt holders makes it actually scarier than nuclear warheads.

If China would decide to sell US treasuries, it will be more devastating to the US economy than effect of 10 nuclear strikes.

anticodon··on Bookmarks.txt is a concept of keeping URLs in plain text files
I use buku: https://github.com/jarun/buku And Syncthing to sync with all my devices.
anticodon··on Copilot broke audit logs, but Microsoft won't tell customers
I'm pretty sure there're thousands of blog posts and books describing creation of a complete flashcards application in all popular programming languages and on all popular frameworks.
anticodon··on Who got arrested in the raid on the XSS crime forum?
LOL. Have you ever read what Ukrainians said in the last 35 years? Not some pretty recital from CNN, ABC, BBC, DW, but actual words said and written by actual Ukrainians?

Or, for that matter, have you ever read Reddit? I'm 100% sure that if I open any subreddit like /r/politics, in the first 10 posts there will be something like "burn all Russians", "we must nuke Russia", "Russian are subhumans and they must be eliminated from Earth". Such phrases are so pervading there that I stopped visiting reddit even for reading technical subreddits. BTW, Reddit moderators never ban users for calling to kill Russians (also, in 2022 Meta openly said it is ok to say such things openly, just to note that nazism is welcome in the West, or to be precise, it never went away and it wasn't an invention of Hitler).

anticodon··on Who got arrested in the raid on the XSS crime forum?
Can you tell a Russian from Ukrainian? Can you even tell an Ukrainian name from Russian name?
anticodon··on Jujutsu for busy devs
Agree, probably could be done in any other VCS as well, including CVS. But only possible if you actually use VCS and use it properly.
anticodon··on What will become of the CIA?
It's good for the US, where it will have absolute hegemony. Bad for all the other countries that will be too small to defend their own interests. Also this scheme will inevitably start hundreds of new wars all around the world. Again, good for US, bad for everyone else.
anticodon··on Jujutsu for busy devs
I used bisect once in my life but it was extremely helpful. Without it I'd spend weeks trying to find regression. With bisect I found and fixed it in under 1 hour.

It's a command that is needed rarely but there's no replacement for it in some situations.

anticodon··on What will become of the CIA?
That's what US is openly planning against all other countries in the world. Divide every country into dozens tiny "independent" countries with puppet "democratic" governments obliging every decision from USA.

There are maps of this new world regularly published by US think tanks.

anticodon··on How Stablecoins Became the Digital Gold Standard
> Nothing appoints the dollar a reserve currency, it's use makes master.

Hundreds of US military bases around the world makes sure that no "stupid" leader of some nation makes a decision to switch from US dollar for international trade.

Those who dared to attempt to give up USD for trade, died horrible death like Muammar Gaddafi. It's a direct message to the remaining leaders: "Don't even think about it"

anticodon··on Huawei releases an open weight model trained on Huawei Ascend GPUs
Most of the sanctions are whac-a-mole game played by the West (mostly by USA): as soon as one of the peripheral countries starts developing its economy, gains more wealth, starts to produce something the competes with products of Western companies, or attempts to avoid use of USD (because it allows immense enrichment of USA simply by printing it in whatever quantities), soon there starts:

- firstly, media attack ("they're dictatorship!", "they're genociding someone", etc), preparing population for stricter measures

- secondly, color revolution, which, if successful, puts puppet malleable government in power, and makes the country ultra-poor (most of the countries, where color revolutions staged by US/West succeeded, became significantly poorer)

- if color revolution didn't work, there's always an option to just bomb the country, because it's always ignored if all the international treaties and laws are ignored if USA or Israel bomb any other nation.
