anschwa··on Cog: Use pieces of Python code as generators in your source files
I'm not exactly sure I understand the use-case, but as far as the example used in the article, shell-command-on-region accomplishes the same kind of thing. Why not leave the "generation code" as a comment in your file the same way cog does?

Not to mention using "C-u M-|" (shell-command-on-region).
anschwa··on Awesome Dotfiles
I use magit as well. I don't end up editing my dotfiles very often anyway, so it's not a big deal to execute a couple git commands here and there. The convenience of not linking files all over the place or depending on other scripts is pretty great.
anschwa··on Awesome Dotfiles
The best way I've found to organize dotfiles is to simply use a bare git repo.

> git init --bare $HOME/.dotfiles`

> alias dot="git --git-dir=$HOME/.dotfiles/ --work-tree=$HOME"

> dot config --local status.showUntrackedFiles no

anschwa··on Show HN: TabNine, an autocompleter for all languages
This is extremely cool. Emacs has a similar, though less intelligent, language agnostic auto-complete function called hippie-expand[0], which has generally been good enough for my needs.

anschwa··on The 2018 MacBook Air is the iPhone X’s ASP strategy all over again
I use an ergodox at work with mx-clears, it’s the most comfortable keyboard I’ve ever had.

The 12” macbook is the greatest laptop I’ve ever had. In fact, I actually prefer the v2 “paper thin” keyboard to the traditional one.

anschwa··on Ask HN: What is the current state of web frameworks in Golang?
While I'd agree that net/http is very capable, it still comes with a variety of gotchas when doing timeouts, logging, routing, etc. I think gin[1] is a good bet for jumping into building something without having to dive into doing a lot of http.Server research.

anschwa··on Keep VS Code from Becoming an IDE
Emacs was designed with the mouse in mind, you can get pretty far just using the toolbar and menu items like you normally would. My understanding is that Emacs users don't typically work in a shell, they use the GUI application.
anschwa··on Eminent Philosophers Name the Most Important Philosophy Books from 1950-2000
> Solomon maintains that “nothing has been more harmful to philosophy than its ‘professionalization,’ which on the one hand has increased the abilities and techniques of its practitioners immensely, but on the other has rendered it an increasingly impersonal and technical discipline, cut off from and forbidding to everyone else.”

> As an addendum, Ho adds that “most of the works on the list are analytic philosophy,”...

Interesting that analytic philosophy is both seen as being the most harmful yet also most prestigious.

anschwa··on Ask HN: What is the biggest challenge you face as a developer?
Figuring out how to show and talk about what I’m working on with my friends and family. Other mediums such as ceramics and painting are much more accessible to a general audience. It would be nice to have a way of showcasing software in a similar way.
anschwa··on Ask HN: What are some of your favorite tech talks over the years?
My favorite talk of all time is “Y Not - Adventures in Functional Programming by Jim Weirich”.

anschwa··on The case for fake LaTeX [pdf]
This research paper is essentially a recommendation to use the Latin Modern Roman font in Microsoft Word in such a way as to “trick” someone into thinking the document was typeset in LaTeX at first glance. It seems like using pandoc or something similar would make a lot more sense for achieving what the author had in mind.
anschwa··on Show HN: Yopp – A very quick way to transfer a file from phone to computer
This would take care of that use case as well. It's a webapp that saves only a single file that can only be downloaded once. The idea is that the URL is only known to you. Pretty neat idea for personal file sharing.
anschwa··on Why the Best Doesn't Always Win (1996)
I learned to touch-type Dvorak about 5 years ago and it's been fantastic. It takes a moderate amount of commitment to become proficient, but immediately more comfortable and natural.
anschwa··on Fibers: Go-Like Concurrency for Guile Scheme
This showed up in the guile-user mailing list this week and looks pretty cool. The manual for the project is here: https://github.com/wingo/fibers/wiki/Manual
