0 utility? I've bought plenty of stuff with it and have had very, very cheap file storage...
anotherrandom··on U.S. Treasury sanctions virtual currency mixer Tornado Cash
TornadoCash is a smart contract, so there is not really a way to enforce the sanction.

Plus, there is not really a way to tell who creates a smart contract if you cover your tracks well enough.

This sanctions stuff is smoke and mirrors for the government to try and convince themselves they are capable of doing something.

The most realistic approach is for major chains to go POS and the major validators and other important pieces of the puzzle to need a lot of resources to the point where they become businesses and are on the governments radar (and by extension they would need to comply with regulations).

But because everyone knows that is a natural consequence of POS, it is exactly why no reasonable person would be on board with a transition to it.

TornadoCash is left because it's still usable despite the sanctions?

This has zero impact on peoples' ability to use the service. Just chain hop a few times with privacy coins if you want to cash out on a cex

If I use Tornado Cash, I'm not funding North Korea -- I'm simply using their service. I have no knowledge of who is receiving my stuff and no intent to fund North Korea, therefore I am not funding North Korea. If it happens by accident then oh well, there's no realistic way to tell it happened anyway and there's certainly no way for me to tell it did

Ban cars because they can be used for robbery getaways
anotherrandom··on U.S. Treasury sanctions virtual currency mixer Tornado Cash
The issue here is that essentially nobody who has used/uses Tornado Cash is technologically inept enough to not know how to use something spun up as an onion service or eepsite (would help lessen the severity of the reduced anonymity issue), if the tornado cash folks don't just use IPFS to host.

Regardless, the website is merely a GUI to make things easier and not necessary for functionality in this case... or is it somehow necessary?

Depends on the company. At BigCorp Inc., that sounds like a great way to get on management's bad side

If he does a good job and is always willing to help, that sounds like a net positive to me. It just might be that there are a lot of toxic team members

Sounds like federation might be making a comeback eventually

Biking is the ideal solution. There is one significant downside, though: the practicality of biking is limited by region and time of year+day. In most places in the Southern portion of the US (regardless of coast), biking any significant distance between the hours of 8am to 9 pm is basically saying "I want heatstroke" for nearly 1/2 of the year

The very fact that we are saying we need to "believe in" science illustrates our society's problem perfectly

There needs to be a J# project lmao

Well, you could always look for when the Russians or Chinese come out with their own and hope the NSA doesn't know those backdoors.

Russia didn't develop Kuznyechik for nothing

And to think a registry of people is a good idea for any reason. Great way to violate the right to privacy of thousands, or millions on a large scale in one stroke of incompetence, bad luck, or both
anotherrandom··on The fall of Reddit: Why it’s quickly declining into chaos
Reddit is largely garbage. Some bits of it are alright, but it has definitely gone downhill since Swartz passed.

At this point the only good forums I am aware of are this one and Bogleheads, apart from a few still-decent parts of reddit that aren't completely astroturfed by corporations or packed full of lower-level midwits (i.e. any subreddit with a subscriber count close to or over 500k).

Anyone else know of good places to read online?

anotherrandom··on Tell HN: Coinbase now requires physical address of recipient in crypto transfers
The government has had practically zero control over cash transactions, historically speaking. The only real power governments have over their money supplies are the power to create and destroy money with impunity, that is all.
anotherrandom··on Tell HN: Coinbase now requires physical address of recipient in crypto transfers
Censorship-resistance == law-resistance. Rules for censoring are imposed by state entities or by private entities enforcing state-defined rules

So what I'm getting from this is buy a bunch of stuff now and get it off the platform before it's too late?
anotherrandom··on A Random Distribution of Wealth (2017)
There is only artificial scarcity in some places. Ensuring a plentiful food (and other resource supplies) in many, many places of the world would require a great many invasions and occupations to root out corruption and snuff out local warlords, abusive military juntas, etc.

It isn't as simple as "just send other places more food" when the local power-tripping dictator will just seize the foreign aid

anotherrandom··on Online Minecraft Bans Will Be Able to Block You from Private Servers
Well, there's always MineTest I guess (edit: a high-quality free and open-source and nearly identical alternative to Minecraft). Microsoft infects everything it touches. I am reluctant to use .NET Core stuff over JVM stuff solely because of things like this and [insert latest .NET Core proprietary code fiasco here].
