anonzzzies··on Your 'app' could have been a webpage (so I fixed it for you)
I love hosting and I will never stop doing it. I keep buying servers (second hand; almost no one actually needs the latest) and hosting 1000s of companies.
anonzzzies··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026)
I like but for many of my regular destinations you are still 2-3x more expensive than what I can trivially find myself, especially longer visiting times and more data.
anonzzzies··on Show HN: Learn by rebuilding Redis, Git, a database from scratch
Thanks!
anonzzzies··on Postgres rewritten in Rust, now passing 100% of the Postgres regression tests
but can you? You cannot do a Postgres clone yourself and the Postgres arch makes it rather impossible to just rip out stuff and replace it. So how would I do this. Even with SQLite and me being a very experienced (40 years) c embedded coder; having AI rewrite it to the architecture I would want it to be and then changing things for fun is a better tutor than whatever I could have done with the original in a shorter time.

I do not care that much but all this user's comments sound like they are unprofessional / 10 years old. Careless commenting to everything while trying to promote a product that's already rather broken.
anonzzzies··on SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
I am also in rural EU and have 1 house that has fiber, and another, 10 minute drive away has nothing, not even cell signal and it won't get anything any time soon. Starlink is basically the only option.
anonzzzies··on EU Parliament greenlights Chat Control 1.0
Is it not comparable in this case? Two western rich nations being undemocratic. At least in the EU there is voting (pointless in this case, but often effective); the US dude just does whatever he wants while the people are against it (ratings and wars which were promised would not happen etc).

It's not just a rewrite ; it has improvements. I did the same thing for fun for the same reason; I wanted to see if I can improvements on some of the legacy design stuff and, especially, the stuff PG people have told us that it cannot be done differently. It can. I would not put it in production, but it thought me a lot about the internals of databases. To keep my brain happy in the age of LLMs, I implement database things on our (also old but many times refactored/rewritten) production db without an LLM. I'm sweating through Flexible Paxos now; probably we will just keep using raft as it's old and stable and simple but it's interesting anyway.

The alternatives are also not to be trusted: if the EU falls we will have war between EU countries and hitlers and francos back in their seats but now with mass AI; Hello Frank, we detected in your email sent 21 years ago that you made fun of Mr Klein, his son, our glorious leader, has auto signed the documents for you to be sent to NeoWitz where you will spend the short remainder of your life.

The issues here are the same as they have been forever in every country; Spanish people simply are not going to do the jobs the immigrants are doing. This is the same in every country I lived in or visited, including the US. In Spain, most my uneducated neighbours feel too high to even work in bars, let alone pick fruit, shovel shit, pick up garbage etc. So who is going to do that besides immigrants who are eager to do it; a few generations later, they will vote right and complain about immigrants and will say they are too good to shovel shit, of course.
anonzzzies··on EU Parliament greenlights Chat Control 1.0
Do they? What I read now and in the past is mostly Americans being proud somehow (with Trump doing whatever he feels like to fill his family's pockets).

These chips are not the latest nvidia etc: false like this are relatively easy to set up compared to fabs that make the chips you seem to be thinking about.

Apparent? Unless Russia attacks there will be no war, it is not the US who willy nilly attacks others.
anonzzzies··on We're extending access to Fable 5 on all paid plans through July 12
I would try it but it goes to opus 4.8 for all we do and so we stopped trying. Our work is not focused on security but obviously, as everything has to, it needs to be audit security. And that will have it change the model.
anonzzzies··on We charge $10k a week to delete AI-generated code
We have been doing this for years now: it is great. We build our products faster and better and we get more money for fixing products vibecoded by others. More money in every way.
anonzzzies··on Europe's company websites are mostly served by US vendors
There are a LOT of processors/acquirers, just most don't want to work with small companies and somehow developers are so really not developers that stripe won because 'better api' even though you get overcharged for everything.
anonzzzies··on Europe's company websites are mostly served by US vendors
That's why I meet with them. I have the mobile number of the ceo of Mollie and can call him in the weekend; compared to the US, we are DEFINITELY not big. But haven't had issues since using them since 2006.
anonzzzies··on Europe's company websites are mostly served by US vendors
Stripe is stupidly expensive ; I have Mollie and Ingenico with tailored deals which make Stripe seems like the dumbest thing you can do. I don't know what their defaults are, but I tried to reason with Stripe and they said i'm too small; no problem with these two. And I can drive to their HQ and ask what's up if anything is up, which I would prefer even at higher fees.
anonzzzies··on Vibe Coded X11 Server Written in Rust Adds Xinerama, FreeBSD Support
We are in a bubble and it's not overrated. Many people just have issues using it correctly it seems. Weird as after 30 years managing 1000s of programmers over that time, this feels the same, yet with many times more and often better output.

Yep, it's pretty bad.
anonzzzies··on Android Developer Verification: Threat masquerading as protection
We need all countries and the EU govs to mandate companies to provide the same vital access via a Web page that works on the 4 major browsers (not an issue anymore) as via the app. All my banks have it; I need an otp device but thats fine; it works well. I wish EU would mandate that plus an EU made hardware device on which all seeds can be stored and otps generated. That can be the size of an USB stick you can put on your keyring. Add NFC/qr so you don't have to type the otp and there we go.
anonzzzies··on Opening up 'Zero-Knowledge Proof' technology to promote privacy in age assurance
We do that here; heavy tax sigarettes (and booze): both dropped like a lead balloon. So yes, tax it for everyone. Kids cannot pay for sigarettes and most adults don't want to (most vapers I know do it because it costs far less; that should be taxed more too imho). If browsing insta/tiktok costs an euro per hour, let's see how many still do it; I'd say they go bankrupt in a few months. Apparently it was never that interesting.

Many uncles of friends (or fathers, who knows) had stacks of porn mags we knew where they were as 70s kids. When very young they were icky and after that we took them home. Who cares.
anonzzzies··on Global review confirms mRNA vaccines are safe, effective and full of promise
I lost friends during covid who turned into morons like that; so much so that I started to think maybe it is a side effect of the virus. One of them recently moved to the other side of the world 'because Trump is going to nuke us' (he lived in the EU). It is fine to dismiss, ignore and berate morons; they won't change their mind and must have been always like that; just before covid everyone would've laughed in your face so you would not have said any of this out loud. Now I meet a few too many people who point at vapour trails and tell me how their gov is blocking the sun and is poisoning us to keep us dumb. Dismiss and hope they won't procreate.

He can't though. Guy looks older than me while almost 20 years younger. Under 50 most people feel immortal. Wait until he is 70. If he makes that.
anonzzzies··on Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5
Maybe OP meant switching in a coding harness way? Not an application using AI? I had similar issues like you in the latter case, but in the former it's trivial.
anonzzzies··on Claude Sonnet 5
Sure, that is why you need to be early. I fully believe my company won't make it another 30 years (or 10), so we prepare for that. Also, I will be dead by then, but that is unrelated.

For now everyone is still sufficiently crap at using AI to need help. We had enough clients trying to build something themselves and then come crying to us.

anonzzzies··on Claude Sonnet 5
Sure about Dario (and all billionaire) weirdness, but no gains if you are a skilled senior is well, very far out in our experience (our company is 30 years old with mostly the original employees and founders): what we deliver now at the speed and quality we deliver it would have been impossible 10 years ago with our team size of skilled seniors. We replaced all the commercial products our clients and ourselves used with our own, giving us millions more revenue and profit with the upselling and efficiency benefits. We work for regulated clients: our code is reviewed, pentested and audited regularly by us and 3rd parties so its not slop either. You are definitely leaving money on the table. We do mostly use chinese models on our own hardware (we colocate cages of racks) so this is not about Anthropic but about AI in general.

Skill athrophy is a real thing though; we try to prevent this by have hackethons (for lack of a better word) without AI where I pick something extremely non trivial and we implement it for fun and profit without AI (with would not matter much as they are currently bad at these things); last one was flex paxos for our in house db with obvious metrics for the endresult: data integrity (duh) under failure and performance better or at least the same as our raft production version.

anonzzzies··on EU commissioners shut down air conditioning for employees, leave theirs on
Agreed, the EU is not that small and Southern countries had to go before northern but now I feel it is pretty normal. Might be my circle of course. Or in a shorter way; YMMV. I know zero people without aircon and one couple live fulltime in a yurt.
anonzzzies··on EU commissioners shut down air conditioning for employees, leave theirs on
Air conditioning weirdness around the EU: I live in the EU and everyone I know, including not too well off people on benefits and pensions, have aircon. I have multiple houses and dozens of aircons, but many friends in small apartments have them too, mostly since covid. In one house I have them running summer and winter 247 and the electric bill is still below 100E, way lower than people with swimming pools.
