anonunivgrad··on The Plague Year
Death counts don’t tell you much. If the main effect of the virus is ultimately to advance a bunch of older people’s deaths by a year or two, then it’s not a big deal. People live and people die, that’s life.
anonunivgrad··on The Plague Year
Making people think they are safe is not sufficient reason to force everyone to wear a mask. It’s only justified if we have good reason to think they work.
anonunivgrad··on The Plague Year
It became a point of civic religion to believe that the virus was catastrophically dangerous. Disagreement was not just mistaken but evil.
anonunivgrad··on Most of what you read on the internet is written by insane people (2018)
Not just insane people, but also people who in real life you would immediately dismiss as losers.
anonunivgrad··on Most of what you read on the internet is written by insane people (2018)
People aren’t psychologically equipped to handle this kind of dishonesty. We evolved to deal with small groups. People would either be forced into honesty by socialization or reputational fears, or they’d be exiled or executed.

Now, you just go on Twitter and virtue signal about some nonsense idpol stuff while robbing everyone blind, and the people will love you.

anonunivgrad··on UK formally leaves European Union after 48 years
Thatcher wasn’t perfect, but England was an economic basket case before her premiership. Visceral Thatcher hate is a meme for nonthinking people.

The great irony is that one of the most significant effects of the EU has been to replicate many of her reforms across the continent. But the europhiles still reflexively hate her.

And why should I or anyone else care about what a fiction author thinks?

anonunivgrad··on Linux Hardening Guide
This is meme security advice. Anti-systemd, anti-glibc, anti-openssl. This is security by internet fad.

As for the rest of the advice, it doesn't explain any of the tradeoffs, making it worthless. The kernel devs and distribution maintainers are not idiots. If you can't explain why it's on, then you don't understand it enough to turn it off.

anonunivgrad··on Linux Hardening Guide
Do you have a source for that?

anonunivgrad··on Developer and Power Users Tool List for Windows
Scoop tries to swim upstream and change the default install location. In my experience, this ultimately leads to problems and system fragility. Sure, it should work, but that's no comfort when it doesn't work right when you need it. Instead, you should install software to the default place and install it as admin. That's how it's tested by its developers and that's how it's tested for regression and compatibility within Microsoft.
anonunivgrad··on Architecture of the Game Boy Advance
Wow! Thank you. I don't think I can justify the purchase, already having bought a fairly small third-party dock and power adapter, but hopefully someone else sees this. The Genki is the obvious choice, assuming it works correctly.
anonunivgrad··on Architecture of the Game Boy Advance
Yes, compare the portability of https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JK9DFKH and https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07D64QLQ1 with having to lug around the official dock and adapter. If you want to take your Switch with you to plug into other people's TVs, it's night and day.
anonunivgrad··on Architecture of the Game Boy Advance
The Switch is great but you have to get a third-party dock and AC adapter for optimal portability[1]. I'm kind of perplexed by the bad design of the official dock.

[1] There were some issues with unofficial docks/adapters bricking consoles, but they seem to be sorted out in the current gen third-party accessories.

anonunivgrad··on Covid-19 Changes Our Sleep
By suggesting any negative effects of lockdowns, you have inadvertently challenged a tenet of the new national religion.
anonunivgrad··on Sony publishes an official Linux driver for Playstation 5 DualSense controllers
If you’re criticizing goto in kernel source, you don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s incredible how many people just regurgitate this anti-goto meme without any experience writing system C code. There are various highly structured uses of goto used for systems programming in C, most prominently for error handling but also for things like retry logic.
anonunivgrad··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
Plenty of young adult books, which is what Harry Potter was, especially after the first book, engage with difficult moral situations. Harry Potter instead tells you that you can have your cake and eat it too.
anonunivgrad··on Ask HN: What Lived Up to the Hype?
My biggest frustration with Harry Potter is that Harry never has to actually make tough decisions. All moral dilemmas are resolved by a deus ex. He never even has to murder the villain, just deflects his spell back at him. My eyes rolled straight to the back of my head.

The books deliver a fantastical, childish view of morality where the world will always save you from having to make difficult decisions.

Running ads on copyrighted content that you didn't pay for is pretty nasty. Is that your position, defending profiteering off of someone else's content?
anonunivgrad··on New coronavirus variant: What do we know?
The places with the strictest mask orders are having surges in cases just the same. E.g. California hospitalizations per capita are now far outpacing Florida. Masks work, kind of, I’m sure, under very particular conditions. But the net effect seems to be minimal.
anonunivgrad··on Show HN: Find the safest well lit walking route between two locations
Maybe I care more about not being mugged than doing racial justice in where I choose to walk. Certain neighborhoods being crime-infested hellholes is not my problem.
anonunivgrad··on New coronavirus variant: What do we know?
Doubtful. The victors write the history. The Church of “If It Saves Even One Life” and “Anti-Lockdown and Anti-Maskers are Murderers” are clearly the victors in this timeline. Your children and grandchildren will be taught about the backwards racists who were willing to sacrifice old people in the name of money, but how the fascist Donald Trump was finally defeated by the forces of democracy and justice and health was restored.
anonunivgrad··on Evidence of “modified gravity” in 150 galaxies bolsters dark matter alternative
I'm responding to a comment that pooh-poohs serious consideration of alternative theories because they are contrary to the "scientific consensus." No one is going to pursue alternative theories if people don't believe in them. Some of us go against the grain, and that's a good thing. But you appear intent in making any true belief in unpopular alternatives into a sin. God forbid someone have a fringe belief! Fringe is BAD and consensus is GOOD. No independent thought. No room for dreamers and speculators and hunch-havers in your world. At most they can coldly look at evidence for alternative theories but never believe them (and resist all cognitive biases with superhuman ability). Have you even considered that fringe belief, and obsession and cognitive bias in its favor, is essential for progress too?

And your talk about the process and malfunctions is frankly comical. These are human beings, not machines. The average person would rather tell a socially sanctioned lie that led to the death of a million people rather than risk his next promotion.

anonunivgrad··on Evidence of “modified gravity” in 150 galaxies bolsters dark matter alternative
Scientific consensus is often wrong. Science advances one funeral at a time. Most “scientists” are conformists looking for their next grant. Outside of the tenured professor elite, most of them are looking for the next job. And the tenured are just one step higher on the pyramid, motivated by prestige and admiration, not pure motives. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s called being human. But don’t put too much stock in consensus, because many of the great breakthroughs have been ignored and ridiculed before finally being accepted.

anonunivgrad··on Justin Amash Introduces Bill to End Civil Asset Forfeiture Nationwide
That's not true. The government must prove, by a prepondernace of the evidence, that the property is linked to crime.
anonunivgrad··on Mentions of the term “simp” across Twitch chat doubled following its ban
I share your sentiment in opposing such efforts, but I think they're actually highly effective. Right-wing populism would have done much better were it not for the extreme censorship deployed against it. Most people have never even heard the best arguments for right-wing positions because they are so actively suppressed.
anonunivgrad··on Justin Amash Introduces Bill to End Civil Asset Forfeiture Nationwide
Criminal prosecutions are for the condemnation of moral wrongdoing. Law serves many functions aside from that.
anonunivgrad··on Justin Amash Introduces Bill to End Civil Asset Forfeiture Nationwide
That's not what I mean. I mean the burden of proof and due process is the same as if I sued you for, e.g., injuring or stealing from me.
anonunivgrad··on Justin Amash Introduces Bill to End Civil Asset Forfeiture Nationwide
The government cannot keep civilly forfeited assets unless it wins a civil case in court, the same process by which anyone can sue and take everything to your name if they win. It also has a long pedigree, being in continuous use before, during, and after the founding era, making it unlikely that it would violate the 4th Amendment.
