anonu··on Optimizing My Hacker News Experience
I would just have 1 improvement for HN: add category tags to each post. The reasoning is that what typically piques my interest may not always be the most voted or most commented posts.

I also want this improvement via a Chrome Extension - so I don't need to remember a new site. (most of my HN experience is via Desktop)

anonu··on Trump announces 100% tariffs on movies ‘produced in foreign lands’
I think thats exactly the point though. There is a perception that "left wing ideals" are represented in art and media and that this must end. This explains the executive order to defund NPR and PBS last week.

You jest, but also I don't mind it for some reason. Maybe it's just me. But at least the overly helpful part in the last paragraph is actually helpful for follow on. They could even make these hyperlinks for faster follow up prompts.

I'm my town we also have strict rules on signage. Signs cannot be backlit or flashy. Generally they need to be setback from the street. This makes things harder to find but it's also easy on the eyes when you're just walking or driving around.

anonu··on Dow plunges 2,200 points, Nasdaq enters bear market
People's models for the world have been massively disrupted. What we knew "before" is sort of thrown out the window now. These tariffs, if they are sustained, will create massive shifts that we cannot fully comprehend. It's like a massive physics system that's just received a shock.
anonu··on How each pillar of the First Amendment is under attack
I would like to think: what doesn't kill us makes us stronger. There's an argument to be made that the US system of checks and balances will be stronger after all of this. We just haven't seen it in action, yet...

I think you had a bad experience. The center of activity isn't the street in the suburbs - its schools, churches, events, etc...

anonu··on The Shitthropocene
I maintain a 2-week supply of boxers, but do laundry every week. Over 10 years theres roughly 520 laundry cycles. I change my boxers at least once a day. Assume each boxer has equal probability of being selected, so it creates a 50% chance of being in that wash cycle. So its feasible that they've been through ~260 wash cycles.
anonu··on The Shitthropocene
(Maybe TMI) Last week my wife was admiring a pair of Patagonia boxers she gave me over 10 years ago. I did note they still looked great after probably a few 100 cycles of washing and drying. I commented that Patagonia made great stuff and actually cared about their materials. So this video is timely.

I'm reminded about what Scott Bessent, the new Treasury Secretary, said earlier this month: Cheap goods are not part of the American Dream [0]. In the US we love our big houses and we fill them up with crap. When the crap overflows it just gets stored in our big garages were we also put our oversized cars. [1]

How we got here today is just the result of the post-WW2 world-order. Global trade was designed to make cheap stuff. While labor rates skyrocketed. So you make more money but you can surround yourself with status symbols and things that supposedly make you more comfortable.

anonu··on Rippling sues Deel over spying
Off topic but since we're talking about deel: how terrible is it to deal with deel?

I've been on employer side of things and it seems like any exceptions to the rigid workflow breaks the entire process. Customer service is completely helpless in solving your problems. Bugs in the UI persist for years. Random emails asking you to complete tasks for long offboarded contractors.

What a load of junk.

But it goes to education! So it's a virtuous cycle.
anonu··on There Was a Texas Lottery Arbitrage
Manufactured spend is a common arb. My favorite was when the US Mint had a free shipping deal and let you buy coins with credit cards. Someone figured out how to buy many $100k coins, wheel them into the bank, payoff his card and get free airline tickets for many years.

Lookup r/churning.

anonu··on There Was a Texas Lottery Arbitrage
It's about expected value. The assumption is more people buy in at higher payouts causing the pot to split. Usually the EV is negative. The real insight here was that this state lottery was not so popular as evidenced by long spans of time between payouts.

Net EV=cost to buy in - probability of winning * (jackpot size / number of people you split it with)

If you have a 1% chance of winning $100 your EV is $1. If you pay $1 to play you breakeven. If the pot is $200 then your EV is $2. You would pay $1 all day for that. But again the risk is more people want to play. If 2 people win then your EV drops back to even.

anonu··on Gambling on papal conclaves
Would definitely vote for that guy if I could. On the other hand, buying "no" has a 6 cent return by end of year which is roughly 10 months away. Thats near 8% annualized if you hold to maturity: (1+(6/94))^(12/10)-1, better than a T-bill right now.
