anonu··on Roomba maker goes bankrupt, Chinese owner emerges
will be replaced by humanoid robots soon
anonu··on Apple has locked my Apple ID, and I have no recourse. A plea for help
This type of stuff makes me want to buy gold and guns.
anonu··on Dollar-stores overcharge customers while promising low prices
They overcharge also via providing low quality products that seem comparable to name brands. Like the loosely wrapped toilet paper roles that have a fraction of what a normal roll has.
anonu··on Hunting for North Korean Fiber Optic Cables
> this document from 2007

Interesting document - confirming "everyone spies on everyone". Is this from some sort of corporate NSA chat room?

anonu··on Most technical problems are people problems
> Most Technical Problems Are Really People Problems

The irony is that this is a classic engineer's take on the root cause of technical debt. Engineers are happy to be heads-down building. But when you get to a team size >1, you actually need to communicate - and ideally not just through a kanban board.

anonu··on Microsoft drops AI sales targets in half after salespeople miss their quotas
Have you ever seen a sales target that was achievable? They are always aspirational.
anonu··on All it takes is for one to work out
The corollary to this is "keep walking"... As my mom always tells me.
anonu··on Tell HN: Happy Thanksgiving
12 years for me... young by comparison. But I was on slashdot in the late 90s if that counts.
anonu··on Show HN: A game where you invest into startups from history
nice game - but you need a UX designer. Almost abandoned it since I thought it was broken... I just didnt know what I was waiting for or didnt know where to click.
anonu··on I Am Mark Zuckerberg
Reminds me of this prank where you call two people with the same name and you conference them together and have them figure it out.
anonu··on Two billion email addresses were exposed
> we run on Azure SQL Hyperscale, which we maxed out at 80 cores for almost two weeks

the data challenge is interesting here. there's clearly a lot of data - but really its just emails and passwords you need to keep track of. SQL feels like overkill that will be too slow and cost you too much. are there better solutions?

15 billion records of email+password, assume ~40bytes thats roughly 600GB

should be searchable with a an off-the-shelf server.

of course, im oversimplifying the problem. but I'm not clear why any solution to insert new records would take 2 weeks...

anonu··on The Basic Laws of Human Stupidity (1987) [pdf]
> One is stupid in the same way one is red-haired; one belongs to the stupid set as one belongs to a blood group.

But we also have self-awareness. Stupid can be de-stupefied through learning. Whereas you can't really change your race or blood type.

anonu··on GLP-1 therapeutics: Their emerging role in alcohol and substance use disorders
have you lost weight?
anonu··on Using AI to negotiate a $195k hospital bill down to $33k
The problem is the insurance+hospital industrial complex. The insurance companies will negotiate this down on your behalf. They basically operate on fear of walking into a hospital and getting a 6-figure bill.

My SO had to take a medevac helicopter once: we got a $65k bill just for the 20-minute helicopter ride which suddenly became under $4k with insurance. The discount made me feel like I was getting a deal, so I gladly paid.

anonu··on Poison, Poison Everywhere
So I need to put something in my body to prevent other things in my body? I don't mean to be the party pooper but this is my first thought. Health conscious people care about plastics in their body and are probably shopping organic and what not. So you have a high hurdle to climb with any "modified" foods.
anonu··on Public Montessori programs strengthen learning outcomes at lower costs: study
The article doesn't really address why Montessori programs performed better at lower costs: these classrooms emphasize self-directed, hands-on learning where children choose activities based on their interests, driving independence and curiosity. Traditional classrooms follow a rigid teacher-led curriculum with structured lessons and uniform pacing for all students.
anonu··on I audited 47 failed startups' codebases
Not indexing your tables is a fireable offense.
anonu··on Vancouver Stock Exchange: Scam capital of the world (1989) [pdf]
Fun piece of writing. Well written.

This still goes on today, to some extent, with the TSXV venture exchange. Listing standards are low and many mining companies go here to raise speculative capital. There are some successes, diamonds in the rough, so to speak.

anonu··on SEC approves Texas Stock Exchange, first new US integrated exchange in decades
Loose language here: in the US you choose which exchange you want to be your primary listing. Listed securities can and usually do trade on all exchanges. Exchanges have different liquidity profiles and market makers. The rules are enforced to ensure that you can send an order to any exchange and you should always get the best price even if it's on another exchange. During regular market hours...
anonu··on SEC approves Texas Stock Exchange, first new US integrated exchange in decades
In this case it's a marketing ploy for the state of Texas and also a way for Schwab, citadel, blackrock and fortress to press their finger on the balance of power which is far tilted towards the ICE.

Also note Schwab is headquartered in Texas and they account for a significant percentage of trading in the US on a daily basis.

anonu··on SEC approves Texas Stock Exchange, first new US integrated exchange in decades
This is the free market speaking. If there was one exchange there would be ~no~ less latency arbitrage. But there are many... Which creates a competitive landscape and reduces fees for investors. The by product is you have many HFTs that come in to take advantage of mispricings, even if they are on sub millisecond scales. It doesn't harm the company or the investor. Its quite the opposite... Investors benefit from competition amongst exchanges and HFTs.

In addition you have redundancy in the markets system. Exchanges are important for national security... Having everything centralized would risk people's retirements, savings, and more

anonu··on I spent the day teaching seniors how to use an iPhone
I'll never forget teaching my elderly aunt how to use a desktop computer. She put her hand over the mouse and rotated it left and right like a steering wheel.

Things many of us take for granted need to be learned if you've never experienced it.

anonu··on I spent the day teaching seniors how to use an iPhone
As an Android-only user, and occasional iphone user (my wife's phone) I agree that the iphone is not as intuitive an interface as it is was. Especially compared to Android.

I would also add that overly designing things usually makes interfaces worse over time. Designers assume some sort of prerequisite knowledge from a user which is not always the case.

On the other hand, having observed kids explore the interface I'm always amazed at how quickly they intuit everything.

anonu··on Map of Near and Middle East Oil 1965
One of the more "recent" developments, not depicted on this map, is the development of the Leviathan gas fields in the Eastern Mediterranean: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leviathan_gas_field

This is bound to shape the geopolitics of the region.

anonu··on Typst: A Possible LaTeX Replacement
Anyone have success with typesetting in HTML and then printing to PDF? This works really well for me and if your application is web centric then it's an easy win if you need to generate PDFs as well.
