anonova··on Speech Is 3x Faster Than Typing for English and Mandarin on Mobile Devices
It's silly they only compared it to a normal on-screen keyboard and not any other input methods, predictive or not (Swype, etc.).

It should be also be noted that their speech tests were done in a controlled, silent environment. I'd expect the error rate and time to complete a phrase would dramatically increase in a noisy room.

anonova··on Fedora 25 to Run Wayland by Default
OS X can only scale by powers of 2. If your monitor runs at native 4K (3840x2160), scaling ~1.28x renders to 6016x3384 and scales down by 2x to 3008x1692. Your example is at 1.5x (2560x1440), which renders to 5120x2880 and scales down by 2x to 2650x1440. The most efficient scale is 2x (1920x1080) because that can be rendered natively. So while you can have arbitrary effective resolutions, it's rather wasteful to render and can have serious performance implications when you're not using native or powers of 2.
anonova··on Why don’t podcasts use VBR MP3s? Because iOS and macOS don’t accurately seek them
No, this is incorrect. It's up to the implementation of the muxer to determine where index information goes, which is typically at the end of the file. This is simply because writing a file is a single pass operation, and you don't know the contents of the atom until you've gone through the all the data for each stream. Many muxers provide an option to place it at the beginning of the file by adding padding and overwriting it afterward, which solves the progressive streaming problem.

How does one actually see the bug report? What is `rdar://27848317` supposed to open?
anonova··on Moving 12 years of email from GMail to FastMail
Oh, that's interesting. I've been wanting to use a custom domain just for forwarding, and the enhanced personal plan seemed like overkill. I'll have to look into the limitations of the lite family plan.
anonova··on Ask HN: What is your go-to example for a good REST API?
Have you actually implemented something following this spec? My experience is that it's somewhat okay-defined for consuming data, but the spec itself is wildly incomplete in the other direction. Looking at the repo and discussion forum, the maintainers are inactive, with tons of open questions unanswered.
anonova··on 31 years later, we found the flight recorders
For those interested, Bill Hammack (Engineer Guy) pulled apart a 1970s-era flight recorder in an old video.[1] The one in video, though, gets etched to a roll of tin rather than recorded to a magnetic tape.

anonova··on The impossible task of creating a “best VPNs” list
The worst problem I've had running a VPN on a VPS is that Google tends to think you're a bot and makes you enter captcha every search query.
anonova··on Out-Of-Box Exploitation: A Security Analysis of OEM Updaters
Indeed, but I do think they are aware of it since they do offer "Signature Edition" computers, which require manufacturers to not install additional software.

anonova··on Google Calendar for Android: Find a time for my meeting
There is indeed a lot of focus on the screenshot now, but the two column layout wasn't that great either. For example, videos with long prefixes would make the right half of the layout useless: http://i.imgur.com/7L8nB7s.png
anonova··on Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus)
No, many people get this wrong. Mainline is stable, and http://hg.nginx.org/nginx/ is dev. The labeled stable version is for distros that have strict upgrade policies.

nginx recommends using mainline over stable: "We recommend that in general you deploy the NGINX mainline branch at all times." [1]

anonova··on Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge
I have an iPhone 5 that has this issue. ~40% battery and if there's a sudden voltage sag like turning on gps or opening the camera, the phone will immediately shut off. This ended up indeed being a defect, so much so that Apple had a recall: https://www.apple.com/support/iphone5-battery/

anonova··on The Story Behind F.lux
Note that autobrightness with f.lux is currently broken in OS X 10.11, and they suggest you to disable it: "Note for people using f.lux on El Capitan (10.11): The new version of "Automatically adjust brightness" in El Capitan seems to cause flickering with f.lux. For the moment, you'll have to turn this feature off to use f.lux. To make the fix, use System Preferences > Displays and uncheck. Occasionally, a reboot may also be necessary." [0]

anonova··on Voxel Quest January 2016 Update
NovaLogic's Delta Force (1998) and Delta Force 2 (1999) had a "voxel game engine [that allowed for a] nearly unlimited draw distance" [1]. Though the other objects in the game were rendered with polygons, has a far view distance been difficult with modern voxel engines?

anonova··on Ruby 2.3.0 Released
How prevalent is `try` in rails/activesupport? My benchmarks show that the lonely operator is ~2x faster than `try`. I'd expect someone to create a gem that monkey patches `try` for those running 2.3.0.

anonova··on MagSpoof – wireless credit card/magstripe spoofer
It's pretty much the same as what's being described in the article. Samsung calls it Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST): http://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00043865/9974103...
anonova··on MagSpoof – wireless credit card/magstripe spoofer
Samsung Pay's pitch is that it is (mostly) backwards compatible with existing card readers. When NFC fails, it does fallback to magnetic strip emulation.
anonova··on Google Launches Android Studio 2.0
This reminds me of the Microsoft vs MikeRowSoft case [1], where Microsoft took legal action against a high schooler for a domain that was phonetically similar to their company name.

anonova··on CINT – A C/C++ interpreter
It's not a layout issue. There are 50+ tiny requests for images of the background and borders. If anything, this shows the reason to use css sprites.
anonova··on Shrine – A new solution for handling file uploads in Ruby
The creator of carrierwave started the new project refile [1] as a better alternative. Is there a comparison between the two approaches, i.e, refile vs shrine?

anonova··on Running Swift code on Android
I use rust with ios, and my bridging header just includes a single C header file. I don't see how it's any more complicated than using a C library.

anonova··on Show HN: A Hand-Drawn QR Code Alternative
For creation and updating, I can see why you would want to authenticate and authorize users, but there should should still be a way to have the app go into a read only state if all I want to do is scan.
anonova··on Bug in widely used OpenSSH opens servers to password cracking
Ah, you're right. I read sshd_config(5) on Arch, which uses 6.9p1 and says the incorrect default is "no". I assumed this was the case on other distros.

So to correct my previous post (I can't seem to edit?), it should be, "Debian-based distros set `without-password`, and others use the default `yes`."

Thanks for the correction!

anonova··on Bug in widely used OpenSSH opens servers to password cracking
I was curious, so I checked different distros. Debian-based distros set `without-password`, and others use the default `no`.

  * Arch Linux (openssh-6.9p1-1): #PermitRootLogin no
  * CentOS 7 (openssh-server 6.6.1p1-12.el7_1): #PermitRootLogin yes
  * Debian 8.1 (openssh-server 1:6.7p1-5): PermitRootLogin without-password
  * Fedora 22 (openssh-server 6.9p1-2.fc22): #PermitRootLogin yes
  * openSUSE 13.2 (openssh 6.6p1-5.1.3): #PermitRootLogin yes
  * Ubuntu 14.04.2 (openssh-server 1:6.6p1-2ubuntu1): PermitRootLogin without-password
  * Ubuntu 15.04 (openssh-server 1:6.7p1-5ubuntu1): PermitRootLogin without-password
