anon6362··on The last RadioShack in Maryland is closing
RatShack was the finest purveyor of overpriced electronic components and electronic repair tools and supplies, electronics learning kits, Tandy computers, RC cars, and ham/CB radio gear. As a kid, it was the only such electronics shop withing bicycling distance, although was located in a ugly shopping mall that no one went to pre-internet. An Australian holding company later bought the mall and refurbished it with exterior-facing shops so that it became both a shopping mall and a very long strip mall on the same property.
anon6362··on Intuit, Owner of TurboTax, Wins Battle Against America's Taxpayers
Regulatory capture and lobbyists win again. Corruption at its finest.

Other countries like Norway have much simpler tax systems that pre-compute the amount for taxpayers.

anon6362··on Man who built ISP instead of paying Comcast expands to hundreds of homes (2022)
I'm about to switch from Spectrum to GVEC, a regional ISP and utility co-op started by farmers. It's about as good as Google Fiber but much more widely-available here, and doesn't give more money to a megacorp.
anon6362··on Is it possible to write plain C iOS app in 2025?
Objective-C is a C superset, while Objective-C++ is a C++ superset, where C++ is a mostly C superset. You're not really buying anything using Objective-C++ by adding another form of OOP, except perhaps for interop with C++.
anon6362··on Stainless steel strengthened: Twisting creates submicron 'anti-crash wall'
Dan Gelbert with his micron accuracy milling machine and lathe. He has stuff on air bearings, positive pressure rooms with pH and humidity control measures.

anon6362··on Stainless steel strengthened: Twisting creates submicron 'anti-crash wall'
I was recently watching a Dan Gelbart video where he mentioned hydrogen-induced cracking of steel (HTHA) discovery during the development and scaling-up of the Haber-Bosch process.
anon6362··on AGI Is Still 30 Years Away – Ege Erdil and Tamay Besiroglu
Fusion power will arrive first. And, it will be needed to power the Cambrian explosion of datacenters just for weak AI.

I could be wrong but AGI maybe a cold fusion or flying cars boondoggle: chasing a dream that no one needs, costs too much, or is best left unrealized.

anon6362··on Students at Military Base Schools Walk Out to Protest Trump Policies
Moral courage is being willing to pay a personal cost. I'm glad for them if they did so clearly.

PS: I'm currently watching baldandbankrupt showing bullet holes in brickwork where a dozen or so Ukrainian citizens were summarily executed by Russian soldiers. This is the kind of evil that must be fought and defeated.

anon6362··on America underestimates the difficulty of bringing manufacturing back
US corporations benefit today from slave labor by people housed in for-profit prisons where there are incentives to over-prosecute brown and poor people. These include, but aren't limited to:

- Aramark

- Avis

- IBM

- JCPenney

- Kmart

- McDonald's

- Nintendo

- Sprint

- Starbucks

- Verizon

- Walmart

- Wendy's

- Whole Foods/Amazon

anon6362··on CVE Foundation
Yup. I'd say around 15% of very severe incidents are ever announced publicly. In most cases, the default is cover-up and hope no one finds out.

To anyone who thinks a libertarian/anarcho-capitalist/Network States "utopia" of Retire All Gubberment Employees (RAGE) is a "good thing", thing about air, water, and soil pollution from sewage to arsenic to particulates to lead to radioactivity. Greedy sociopaths DGAF who they hurt, which is perhaps why James Madison observed: "If all men were angels, no government would be necessary." Obviously, this is not human nature and so some laws, enforcement, and regulators is required indefinitely. Anyone who tells you differently isn't a serious person.

anon6362··on AWB 63-002 Bell 206 Freewheel Unit Failures [pdf]
It's based on this incident. [0]

Contrary to some aviation experts on YT, mast bumping and catastrophic mast separation in the 206 is possible with debris in the oil restrictor to the freewheeling unit.

anon6362··on Dead trees keep surprisingly large amounts of carbon out of atmosphere
Nope. Philip Mason debunked #TeamTrees as yet another, completely pointless MrBeast vibe cause.

Better off with bio-CSS using GMO kelp or algae, e.g., biomass that grows faster and doesn't rot or burn.

anon6362··on Palestinian activist arrested by ICE while expecting U.S. citizenship interview
Be the change you seek.
anon6362··on 'Parkinson's is a man-made disease'
Possibly.

Being too closely related to MPP+, paraquat should be banned.

As an unrelated example of residues in non-organic crops: oats are typically sprayed with glyphosate to speed drying them simply to reduce the amount of fuel needed to harvest them.

anon6362··on Education Secretary Wants 'A1' in Classrooms
There are many better BBQ sauces. A1 is for cube steak and other trash.
anon6362··on The next generation of Bazel builds
Proper, dependency-aware build caching makes or breaks a build system. Meta's buck2 builds tend to be crazy fast because of this and it can also do synthetic checkouts with arc/"hg" via eden.
anon6362··on The next generation of Bazel builds
https://github.com/facebook/sapling/tree/main/eden

I'm still unsure if a complete, viable eden solution was released with all of its necessary components.

anon6362··on The next generation of Bazel builds
I miss Meta's arc + buck2 + eden + "hg" + "phabricator" + testing infrastructure that does a lot of acceleration of builds, testing, and landing commits without rebasing.
anon6362··on The next generation of Bazel builds
That's the rub. It provides scalability for very large organization, of which, there are few. It's similar to running OpenStack. Meta also has some projects like this, such as buck2 which lacks the really good virtual FS acceleration stuff (eden). Megacorp FOSS tend to skew towards offering whizbang features that are incomplete, complicated, poorly documented, and require a lot of extra work.
anon6362··on Cannabis smoking associated with persistent epigenome-wide disruptions
IME: Increase in artist-like traits like creativity, magical beliefs, and odd behavior. I've seen a couple of Youtubers like this and remember some heavy weed smokers in undergrad who started to go off the rails.
anon6362··on Linux Kernel Defence Map – Security Hardening Concepts
By default, Linux has way, way too much functionality, insufficient testing and proof of security correctness, and not enough security controls.
anon6362··on Busy Bar
This should be a $4.99 app on a smartphone and/or desktop and doesn't take up any space.

Related but different better time/social management physical device for cube land would be an Arduino, a button, and an 4-7 color andon tower representing states such as:

- Working

- Lunch or errand (will return)

- Out-of-office (not returning for the day)

- Working remotely

- DND

- Open to socializing

- On vacation

And then a glossary for definitions posted prominently on the cube/office and on the intranet portal personal page. No app, no internet connectivity, no security vulnerabilities, no complexity, and <$20.

anon6362··on Tell HN: Pocket (acquired by Moz) only works with FF now
Yep, both major non-Safari Mobile browser are still using WebKit, which means, it's probably better to use Safari unless there are compelling features that break out of the walled garden.

Apple rescinded the "WebKit for every browser" requirement, but Chrome iOS with the Blink rendering engine will supposedly arrive this year (2025) and yet I don't think a similar FF Quantum for iOS will happen anytime soon.

I happened to have FF installed on an iPhone 13 Pro because it synced over from an iCloud backup but I never bothered to run it since I tried running on an iPhone 6S once-upon-a-time.

anon6362··on Why I don't discuss politics with friends
The problem is the property political class, which includes both parties a-la Gore Vidal, seeks to dismiss, gaslight, and distract from these problems and instead make them pseudo-wedge issues or political footballs. One side is stuck on remaking reality as a shared, fantastical mirage, and the other complains about the delusion with stern words but agrees to it anyhow. Neither is concerned with addressing the core problem: big money buying all 3 branches of govt, and John McCain found that out the hard way that ethics don't win votes because enough Americans' manufactured consent to condone lawlessness, authoritarianism, radical deregulation, and privatization.

Either a Constitutional Convention 2.0 needs to happen to undo the damage like the repeal of the Tillman Act and the disastrous Citizens' United, or Americans needs to voluntarily do away with popularity contests by instead picking public administrators with limited power by sortition from amongst professional societies for a limited term of say 4 years once.

anon6362··on Why I don't discuss politics with friends
"Unbiased" aggregators like Ground News, MSM, and the right blogosphere like Joe Rogan are doing their best to normalize dragging the Overton window to the right with haste. Progressives have a handful of obscure, disconnected, largely-unknown reputable sources with a wasteland of as many or more former progressives and once-promising journalist and journalist-adjacent personalities.
