anon4··on Show HN: Grid – Multiplayer Creative Workspace
Looks like pretty folders for pictures with titles with a grid background. I'm not sure why it's so revolutionary all of a sudden. Maybe the UI is really slick?
anon4··on Wikimedia removes the Diary of Anne Frank due to copyright law
I'm leaning towards an army of battle droids. I wonder if I can kickstart that...
anon4··on Overworked? Good habits, not holidays, are the answer
It's called Shadowrun. You're living it. The only thing missing is corporation-states and those are coming fast.
anon4··on What do you mean ‘we need more time’? Project schedule estimation in software
> The fact that I technically only asked how long the fix would take is something only an engineer would bother pointing out. -_-

Well excuse me for not fitting your prejudiced profile for a neurotypical extroverted 20-something white male. Yes, I might have needed the clarification between "how long will it take you to paint the room" vs "how long until the room is back the way it was with the walls in a different colour", but you help noone when you talk down to the painter like that. You asked a question and I misunderstood, because we use slightly different language and I have a ton of other things to think about all the time.

Can we stop this "oh let's treat engineers like they're children with mental development issues" already? I'm not some god in an ivory tower, I don't want you to kneel before me, I just want the usual everyday respect you afford to your peers and to engage with me as one professional with another.

This kind of treatment is not ok.

anon4··on A Better Varargs
Yeah, but then you have to compile the function in every single cpp file and your linking time increases and you're at risk of violating ODR and you have to give people the full definition of your function if you're making a library rather than just the declaration and a .a/.obj/.so.
anon4··on My Little Sister Taught Me How to “Snapchat Like the Teens”
P.S. as a corollary, if you were 14 today and on snapchat, you'd be one of the weird people she doesn't want to snapchat with and you'd be in the exact same position.
anon4··on My Little Sister Taught Me How to “Snapchat Like the Teens”
I didn't know how to use Facebook when I was 18, so don't feel too bad. We grew up on IRC and PHPBB, social networks of fundamentally different make than the ones in use now.

Plus, you are (were) one of the dorks and your sister is one of the cool kids. The two groups have noticeably different modes of socialising.

anon4··on The Sad State of C Strings
Right, 8. I miscounted it as 4 loops :)
anon4··on The Sad State of C Strings
And then you do infinite copying if you're catenating a string with itself.
anon4··on The Sad State of C Strings
Good, but I'd do one modification -- always write a null byte at the end. Otherwise you end up with a non-null-terminated string and that's bad.

So,

  copy_sz = src_sz < (dest_sz - dest_off) ? src_sz : (dest_sz - dest_off - 1);
  ...
  *dest_end = '\0';
anon4··on The Sad State of C Strings
strcatm is the convenience macro that adds a last NULL arg. And it's 16, because it doubles each time. Already fixed.
anon4··on The Sad State of C Strings
As a bonus, this works with e.g.

  char buf[256]; buf[0] = 'x'; buf[1] = '\0';
  strcatm(buf, buf, buf, buf);
producing a string of 16 'x's
anon4··on The Sad State of C Strings
Eh...

  // This code is licensed under CC0.
  // A copy of the license can be obtained at https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/
  // May you forever catenate in peace.
  #define strcatm(...) strcat_multi(__VA_ARGS__, NULL);
  char* strcat_multi(char *dest, ...) {
    va_list srcs;
    char *dest_end;
    const char *src;
    size_t src_sz;
    va_start(srcs, dest);
    for (dest_end = dest; *dest_end; dest_end++);
    for (src = va_arg(srcs, const char *); src; src = va_arg(srcs, const char *)) {
      src_sz = strlen(src);
      memmove(dest_end, src, src_sz);
      dest_end += src_sz;
      *dest_end = '\0';
    }
    va_end(srcs);
    return dest_end;
  }
There. Now go and catenate, children.
anon4··on Do animals feel empathy? the decades-long quest for an answer
Could it be that all animals have empathy, but some have a much smaller and/or different set of feelings they experience? As an analogy, if I see you eating candy, I can understand that you're currently tasting sweet, but if a cat sees you, it has no concept of sweet, because its tongue doesn't have those receptors. You can also see this in people, the most egregious example being "Let them eat cake" oft mis-attributed to Marie Antoinette. If you have never felt something yourself, either due to your upbringing or because your species has no capacity to experience that feel, is it that you have no empathy towards someone having that experience or that you simply cannot so much as conceive of the feeling in question?
anon4··on How Would You Do on the New SAT?
The phone one was a bit grating because the numbers didn't have any quantities attached to them. Though of course that would make the question trivial, if I wrote something like "P = 108 - 23*d", I'd get marks off and a big (WHAT?) next to the numbers. Without specifying 108 whats it is, it could be 108 peppers or 108 bicycle-riding monkeys wearing suits. It's more of a common sense question than an actual mathematics question.
anon4··on How Would You Do on the New SAT?
I'm more perplexed by how to solve it, since any odd number of salads is a solution. I.e. for every k, 836.5 - 6.5 * (2 * k + 1) is an even number
anon4··on Avast: a Chromium fork with critical security checks removed
From what people I've talked to have told me - they don't trust Microsoft to secure the OS.

Plus, e.g. Comodo gives you a firewall. While I know that Windows has a perfectly good firewall, it doesn't come with a systray icon with a button labeled "protection from active network probes: active" or whatever.

Personally, I just have a router between me and the big bad internet and use Security Essentials plus Common Sense 2012.

anon4··on The Rent-Seeking Is Too Damn High
You also have laws against copyright infringement. And just as you can't unsee an illegally downloaded movie, you can't unkill a man.
anon4··on Artisanal Integers
Off-topic (though hand-picked integers isn't much of a topic to begin with..) do you know of a font, preferably serif, that has the little cross bar on the digit 7 that's common to hand-writing but seems to be shunned by most font designers?
anon4··on Laura Poitras Reveals Her Own Life Under Surveillance
So you're saying the "pretend to upkeep security while in reality maintaining an iron grip on society for your friends in [REDACTED]" market is ripe for disruption? ...
anon4··on Why a city should not build a stadium for an NFL team

Annnd that's a downvote. This community prides itself on good, honest discourse and high-level language. Please don't bring us down to the level of a 7-year-old redneck.

anon4··on SnooCode: addressing and routefinding in a country without street addresses
Kind of related, I'm really disappointed at Google Maps's inability to deal with my country's addressing scheme. We practically have two parallel systems in use: the usual street+number, and district+number. Almost without exception, the latter is used only for blocks of flats and other residential buildings built under the former communist regime. Each building only has an actual address in one of these systems, i.e. either it's directly on a street and given a number, or it's offset from the main street with a small unnamed side street going to it and given the next sequential number for the district, or it is on an actual street, but the street doesn't have numbers or a name posted. This does mean that buildings in the district+number scheme are practically plopped at random and there is no guarantee that N will be next to N+1 and sometimes a building gets an extension and the extension's number is N-A. Sometimes you have a pair of buildings planned and N-A and N-B allocated for them, but then N-B gets cancelled and you only have N-A...

Paper maps work by having a reference on the back telling you at which rough coordinates building N in district X is and our homegrown online maps simply have all the GPS coordinates for every building.

However, in Google's case, half the time it fails if I write "City, district number". It knows, say, building 219, but not 220, even though they're right next to each other. It seems to treat the entire "district number" string like a property name, like if you have a property called "the awesome steakhouse" and type "the awesome steakhouse" in maps, it shows you where the awesome steakhouse is in the city.

anon4··on Lexical Distance Among the Languages of Europe
Yeah, a full graph would have been nice. Maybe one where you can click a language and it rearranges centred on that.
anon4··on Pagination 101
So SELECT yada yada LIMIT n + epsilon + 1, and if you get that many elements out, display n, otherwise, display all of them.

anon4··on Why Shitty Products Survive and Thrive
You can replace cat in show() with tail -n +0 which will also output each file's name as a heading.
anon4··on How I fixed a bug in Atom
Because it has a friendly interface, while Vim and Emacs have all these "weird" keybinds and whatnot. These are people switching from e.g. SublimeText to Atom.

I am not trying to harp on Vim or Emacs, I myself am a Vim user and use it for C++ code.

anon4··on Rich dad, poor dad – the story that formed my views on making money
Isn't he basically preaching a rentier economy? That sort of thing is not sustainable at scale - at best you can have something like 10% of people getting rent (leeching off of) the people doing the actual work. Speaking ethically, this is one of the sleaziest ways you can make money - you're making your own basic income, except it's 5 times bigger than the income of the people who actually do the work. You're depriving honest workers of the fruits of their labour.

People like him are what's wrong with society today and nothing short of a bloody revolution will set us back on the right path.

anon4··on Sit/Stand Desk: IKEA Skarsta Review
His wallpaper doesn't strike me as particularly work-appropriate. And let's not forget the blow that Leia's "slave outfit" dealt to feminism and female participation in the arts.
anon4··on Viewer.js – JavaScript image viewer
At this point I'm not sure if it's even the perception of those around you and not what those around you think the perceptions of those around them might be.
