ano-ther··on Looking at some claims that quantum computers won't work
I am not Scott Aaronson, but probably because that statement is not making any effort to analyze how Hilbert is connected to reality and how where why that connection breaks down.
ano-ther··on Rumor About GPT-5 Changes Everything
Hm

> Let me be clear: this is pure speculation. The evidence is public, but there are no leaks or insider rumors that confirm I’m right. In fact, I am building the theory with this post, not just sharing it. I don’t have privileged information—if I did, I’d be under an NDA anyway. The hypothesis feels compelling because it makes sense. And honestly, what more do I need to give the rumor mill a spin?

ano-ther··on Webtop – Alpine,Ubuntu,Fedora, and Arch containers containing full desktop envs
Sure. But you don’t have to deliberately destroy all data and be mean about it as in GP‘s case to get an emotional reaction.
ano-ther··on AI founders will learn the bitter lesson
So what is the appropriate course of action if you are a founder? Just wait until the models inevitably get better, or help a customer with their problem now?

Computer power has been increasing all the time, but that hasn't kept people from experimenting with the limited power of their time (which ultimately led to better solutions) rather than waiting for the more powerful machines.

ano-ther··on My Gen Z kids had a surprising reaction to 'Dead Poets Society'
Maybe we should reserve “traumatized“ for truly damaging events. The movie may be touching and upsetting, but that’s a way to explore what matters to you.
ano-ther··on Doomsday Book (2006) [pdf]
It's accountable to Congress:

https://www.federalreserve.gov/faqs/about_14986.htm

> The Federal Reserve System is not "owned" by anyone. The Federal Reserve was created in 1913 by the Federal Reserve Act to serve as the nation's central bank. The Board of Governors in Washington, D.C., is an agency of the federal government and reports to and is directly accountable to the Congress.

> Some observers mistakenly consider the Federal Reserve to be a private entity because the Reserve Banks are organized similarly to private corporations. For instance, each of the 12 Reserve Banks operates within its own particular geographic area, or District, of the United States, and each is separately incorporated and has its own board of directors. Commercial banks that are members of the Federal Reserve System hold stock in their District's Reserve Bank. However, owning Reserve Bank stock is quite different from owning stock in a private company. The Reserve Banks are not operated for profit, and ownership of a certain amount of stock is, by law, a condition of membership in the System. In fact, the Reserve Banks are required by law to transfer net earnings to the U.S. Treasury, after providing for all necessary expenses of the Reserve Banks, legally required dividend payments, and maintaining a limited balance in a surplus fund.

ano-ther··on Microsoft Bitcoin Strategy by Michael Saylor [pdf]
This is not Microsoft’s strategy, but someone wanting them to buy Bitcoin.
ano-ther··on Human study on AI spear phishing campaigns
I just received a corporate IT security training link. From an external address and with a cryptic link. After a previous training which asked us not to trust external emails (spoofable) especially not with unknown links.

IT wasn’t amused when I reported it as phishing attempt.

ano-ther··on Taiwan asks South Korea for help over Chinese ship after subsea cable damaged
Worrisome. But is it a good idea to let the owner know that their ship will be searched at the next scheduled port?

> “Since it was not possible for us to question the captain, we have asked the South Korean authorities to help with the investigation at the ship’s next port of destination,” a Taiwan Coast Guard official said. A Taiwanese national security official said the ship was due to arrive in Pusan over the next few days.

ano-ther··on Shmøergh Hog – The making of a simple analog synth
Cool project, very nicely done.

And Ikea Bittergurka as enclosure is a great idea for my next project.

ano-ther··on New ThinkPad X9 comes without TrackPoint
Oh no. That’s the biggest reason why I just bought another ThinkPad instead of a comparable other brand.
ano-ther··on Unforgeable Quantum Tokens Delivered over Fiber Network
Large companies and governments go to some lengths to protect their internal communications between their sites.

Cloud providers also have some dedicated fiber between their data centers.

ano-ther··on Microsoft rejects documentation PR because AI chatbots can't display tables
Did you solve (a)? I found the “globe” button but have to press it for every single page which gets tedious.
ano-ther··on Mystery as radioactive shipment goes missing in New Jersey amid drone invasion
Indeed:

> HIS MATERIAL EVENT CONTAINS A 'Less than Cat 3' LEVEL OF RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL

> Sources that are "Less than IAEA Category 3 sources," are either sources that are very unlikely to cause permanent injury to individuals or contain a very small amount of radioactive material that would not cause any permanent injury. Some of these sources, such as moisture density gauges or thickness gauges that are Category 4, the amount of unshielded radioactive material, if not safely managed or securely protected, could possibly - although it is unlikely - temporarily injure someone who handled it or were otherwise in contact with it, or who were close to it for a period of many week

ano-ther··on Home Assistant can not be secured for internet access
I understand complexity of VPN as a reason to give up, but not the other two.

Wouldn’t it just be the server which needs to be accessed from the outside? And the control interface is not that bandwidth-hungry.

> Bandwidth Limitations: A VPN could bottleneck the performance for some devices.

> Device Compatibility: Not all devices can reliably connect to a VPN.

ano-ther··on Sci-Hub is now available as meme coin
Why should I speculate with this rather than donating directly at https://sci-hub.se/donate ? It doesn’t seem like the full amount arrives at SciHub:

> $scihub is not an official Sci-Hub token, is not affiliated with Sci-Hub, and does not own Sci-Hub.

> The $scihub community has proudly pledged 20% of the total token supply to Sci-Hub

ano-ther··on Contradictions in photography advice
Agree. Mostly, the “rules” help a beginner to understand the levers they can pull to get the intended effect. Then they can experiment and develop the artistic taste & technical experience so they can choose what to apply.

But they shouldn’t be seen as dogma. (Well, unless you do it on purpose: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogme_95 )

ano-ther··on Musicians to lose a quarter of income to AI in next four years, study finds
I can’t imagine choosing to listen to AI generated music. But then there is so much (uninteresting) background music everywhere that I may not even notice.

The other part is how many people you need to produce music. There are tools which can replace some of the work, such as mastering, playing an instrument or even making me a singer with a decent voice. Not for the high end, but still a threat to studio musicians.

ano-ther··on US officials urge Americans to use encrypted apps amid unprecedented cyberattack
> Our suggestion, what we have told folks internally, is not new here: encryption is your friend, whether it’s on text messaging or if you have the capacity to use encrypted voice communication.

Solid advice. But how do I get encrypted voice communication? Are Signal‘s or WhatsApp‘s calls encrypted?

Also, they sound so much worse than an old-fashioned call.

ano-ther··on Scarf pin-related hijab syndrome: Unusual type of foreign body aspiration (2017)
Ouch.

And an interesting asymmetry:

> The left main bronchus is the most common site of pin impaction.

> Although inhaled foreign bodies commonly lodge in the right bronchial tree, scarf pins more often settle in the left tree. Numerous authors have attributed this finding to the Bernoulli phenomenon, which states that coughing, laughing, or speaking creates stronger negative pressure in the narrow left bronchus than in the wide right bronchus.

ano-ther··on EU High-Level Group: access to data for effective law enforcement [pdf]
Background on the High-Level-Group: https://home-affairs.ec.europa.eu/networks/high-level-group-...

From the document it seems they want to be able to intercept and decrypt all communication (even complaining that car manufacturers don't retain enough data).

ano-ther··on 'Shallow' sports and 'deep' social hierarchies
In official diplomacy that is very much alive, eg for the US: https://www.state.gov/bureaus-offices/secretary-of-state/off...

Not just hierarchy but to create a common ground for everyone involved. Very helpful. If you’ve ever felt awkward at an event because you didn’t know the customs — this is to avoid that.

EDIT: here is another example, UN protocol in Geneva https://www.eda.admin.ch/dam/mission-onu-omc-aele-geneve/en/...

ano-ther··on Developing a cancer drug without Big Pharma: this hospital shows it can be done
From the article translation it sounds like they have phase 3 data and submitted or are about to submit an application to the European Medicines Agency.

That means they have gone all the way to prove it’s safe and effective, and now have to convince the regulators.

Can anyone find the studies?

ano-ther··on Ask HN: Has anyone tried adapting a court reporter keyboard for writing code?
Is that language specific then?

I would imagine that programming languages need another vocabulary and you will also need to deal with LongVariableNames, delimiters, tabs etc.

ano-ther··on US Regulation of Sausages
Looks like fairly standard operating procedure to ensure preservation and avoid infections.

The author wishes for courts and insurance to replace such regulation, but that would be more onerous for businesses (especially small ones).

It would also be slower and more random to react to new insights, because instead of having a structured agency consultation process, it will have to make its way through the courts.

ano-ther··on A summer intern once saved Valve from a near-fatal lawsuit
In a discovery you don’t really have a choice.

On the other hand, perhaps the summer intern would have had an easier time finding something (and the defense more time to spot potential gaps in their arguments).

ano-ther··on Thing DELETED 3 MONTHS OF WORK (2017)
Agree.

The UI prompt was: “Are you sure you want to discard ALL changes. This is IRREVERSIBLE.”

This, after the user wanted to stage their files for the first time. What does “changes” even mean in that context?

But also trying a new tool on 5k files that aren’t saved elsewhere isn’t advisable.

ano-ther··on Time-series forecasting through recurrent topology
Isn’t it because m = n - 2 (above equation 4) and you want to get to n + 1?
ano-ther··on Time-series forecasting through recurrent topology
Thanks. What I don’t understand is how searching for previous patterns that are similar helps in predicting timelines that are chaotic (it seems to be quite good at that).
ano-ther··on Time-series forecasting through recurrent topology
Interesting idea.

The FReT algorithm (if I understand correctly) works on equally spaced points in time and projects on the same grid into the future. So it would seem that interpolation is not possible with this method.
