ano-ther··on Show HN: Simple Audio Sweeper
Nice tool, which came just in time.

Took me a while to figure out how to sweep (hold ctrl while selecting one of the tracks on the right, then hit start), which could be explained in a slightly longer tooltip for start. The auto sweep creates a more jagged curve for me than sweeping manually, so I will have to play with the parameters.

Good example of why synthetic market research based on LLMs won’t add much value. You just won’t find such hacks in the model.

ano-ther··on Love Dart
Fascinating. How many generations does it take to evolve such a feature? And what steps does that process take?
ano-ther··on People inside Microsoft are fighting to drop mandatory Microsoft Account
Fully agree.

The problem is that on a fresh system with a free MS account, OneDrive shows up as the first choice as “$User - Personal files”. No notice that this actually only stores it online and offers only a fraction of the 1TB local drive.

Truly deceptive and my mistake for not noticing when I helped to set up that laptop.

ano-ther··on People inside Microsoft are fighting to drop mandatory Microsoft Account
That would improve things.

Over the weekend, a family member could not log into their laptop any longer. Turned out to be “a problem with Teams” that required an unscheduled update which was marked as optional. Needless to say that they never used Teams on that machine.

When the login worked partially, their files weren’t accessible because they accidentally saved it on OneDrive which now defaults to storing online only. And OneDrive was also affected by the Teams bug.

Spent a good part of the day cursing in the direction of Redmond.

ano-ther··on MIDI 2.0 (and enhanced MIDI 1.0) comes to Windows 11
This sounds exciting and it seems to be enabled on my Windows installation (checked with their tool).

But where do I go from here? Is there something usable for the end user (like the settings app they mention) or is it developers-only for now? How do I use it with my Ableton + external setup?

The documentation I found is not very clear: https://microsoft.github.io/MIDI/

ano-ther··on Claude's Cycles [pdf]
Interesting that for a paper by Don Knuth himself the PDF was created with dvips (TeX Live) but then switched to Acrobat Distiller, resulting in a rather low resolution (at least on my screen).

From the document properties: > Creator: dvips(k) 2023.1 (TeX Live 2023) > PDF Producer: Acrobat Distiller 25.0 (Macintosh)

ano-ther··on The $6 Bug
Great post. Even if you don’t care for the 6$, avoiding to hog 64% of the CPU would be worth it.
ano-ther··on The RCE that AMD won't fix
Not that this isn’t bad, doesn’t this only apply when an update is available?

So you have to be on a shady hotspot, without VPN, AMD has recently published an update, and your update scheduler is timed to run.

That would be a little less than “immediately own anyone with ATI”.

ano-ther··on Microsoft is working to rebuild trust in Windows
There is a setting to control which app that key opens.
ano-ther··on Microsoft is working to rebuild trust in Windows
I am not sure if I count as a “passionate customer” or more a captive one, but I sure hope they fix it.

Recently, even cut and paste is no longer reliable.

- Sometimes cmd-c doesn’t do anything, only right-click works

- Pasting an image into PowerPoint requires an explicit paste as picture

- Pasting as picture in Outlook is only available after I default-paste the picture once

These and other things are very irritating because they disturb my flow and make me question my sanity (“did I not press cmd-c?”).

ano-ther··on Experiments with Ableton-MCP
Excellent! I tried to use Claude on the Ableton file format about a year ago and it left me quite frustrated -- but now I have a new reason to look at this again.

Generally, it would be nice of Ableton to release an official documentation of their API.

ano-ther··on Common Home Appliances Emit Trillions of Harmful Particles, Study Finds
> these appliances emitted a high number of UFPs. The worst offender was a pop-up toaster, which without any bread inside it, gave off around 1.73 trillion UFPs per minute.

If my math is correct, that toaster is shedding about 0.6 mm^3 per minute of its heating coils.

ano-ther··on Here is the 15 sec coding test I used to instantly filter out most applicants
Was that the trick? When copying the text, it is also >=, which is why an online search or AI tools probably give the wrong answer as the article asserts. If you correct the code then at least Claude gives the right answer.
ano-ther··on Ask HN: Glasses with lights that flash whenever they detect cigarette smoke?
It draws the attention more to the non-smoking wearer rather than to the smoker. People may be puzzled about what the signal means.
ano-ther··on Vsora Jotunn-8 5nm European inference chip
I don’t get the negativity.

The specs look impressive. It is always good to have competition.

They announced tapeout in October with planned dev boards next year. Vaporware is when things don’t appear, not when they are on their way (it takes some time for hardware).

It’s also strategically important for Europe to have its own supply. The current and last US administration have both threatened to limit supply of AI chips to European countries, and China would do the same (as they have shown with Nexperia).

And of course you need the software stack with it. They will have thought of that.

ano-ther··on Passkeys: They're not perfect but they're getting better
That’s a good overview of the benefits and challenges.

I like the convenience of passkeys, but it adds to my worries of losing or breaking a device.

Does anyone know a good solution that is as easy and portable as handling a KeePass kdbx file? (Without resorting to Apple or Windows backup solutions)

Yubikey looks ok, but they are apparently restricted to 25 keys (why?).

ano-ther··on AOL to be sold to Bending Spoons for $1.5B
Can someone enlighten me on the economics of such a deal?

From what I know about acquisitions, valuations are in the range of 10-12 times annual EBITDA (or perhaps even profits). This would mean that AOL is making 150 million a year. Is that correct?

ano-ther··on Structure and Interpretation of Classical Mechanics (2014)
It’s been a while but I seem to remember that the first book of Landau-Lifschitz‘ Theroretical Mechanics starts with a 20 page discussion that does this and culminates in the Lagrangian.
ano-ther··on Tags to make HTML work like you expect
Please don’t. HN has just the right information density with its small default font size. In most browsers it is adjustable. And you can pinch-zoom if you’re having trouble hitting the right link.

None of the ”content needs white space and large fonts to breathe“ stuff or having to click to see a reply like on other sites. That just complicates interactions.

And I am posting this on an iPhone SE while my sight has started to degrade from age.

ano-ther··on Dutch spy services have restricted intelligence-sharing with the United States
To be fair, Excel (on Windows) is far ahead of the competition, especially for power users like Finance.

For other office apps, the alternatives work, although I don’t know how, for example, LibreOffice fares with collaborative editing.

ano-ther··on How Apple designs a virtual knob (2012)
The knob is clever and very well emulates a physical knob. That's not a good design for an on-screen one though.

- Going "around the rim" in an arc is difficult both for touch and mouse. Results in jerky motion.

- Defining the direction based on which outer rim I am closer to makes it unpredictable, especially for small knobs.

Best in my opinion is the "click / hold the knob and pull vertically or horizontally with up/right turning to the right. Makes it fast and predictable even with little space like a DAW audio mixer.
