anilshanbhag··on Please Buy Less
I was not sure about posting this. The world is weird in that you are a single person in a sea of 7+ billion people, it is very hard to get your message across and even harder to make a change that will actually make a dent. Hope you think twice before buying and save some money too - have a nice extended weekend :)
anilshanbhag··on Personal and social information of 1.2B people discovered in data leak
People data labs's data is pretty accurate. Here is mine: https://api.peopledatalabs.com/v4/person?api_key=9c6a1382204...

You can try it for yourself by changing the email. All of the information is public, so I don't mind. They are basically doing data integration.

anilshanbhag··on Microsoft Wins Pentagon’s $10B Contract
A key ammo that Microsoft has to get customers to its cloud is their Windows and Office 365 franchise. It is likely like many traditional companies Pentagon wanted to move their mail, storage, powerpoint/excel/word, etc to this cloud rather than use lambda or other hot features that AWS has.
anilshanbhag··on PG&E may cut power to 850k California customers this weekend due to fire risk
Background on why california has so many fires: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/09/climate/why-california-fi...

Answer: Santa Ana Winds + above ground power lines + fire suppression. From the article:

It’s counterintuitive, but the United States’ history of suppressing wildfires has actually made present-day wildfires worse.

“For the last century we fought fire, and we did pretty well at it across all of the Western United States,” Dr. Williams said. “And every time we fought a fire successfully, that means that a bunch of stuff that would have burned didn’t burn. And so over the last hundred years we’ve had an accumulation of plants in a lot of areas.

“And so in a lot of California now when fires start, those fires are burning through places that have a lot more plants to burn than they would have if we had been allowing fires to burn for the last hundred years.”

In recent years, the United States Forest Service has been trying to rectify the previous practice through the use of prescribed or “controlled” burns.

anilshanbhag··on Open-source apps removed from Google Play Store due to donation links
In this case, can't you simply have a one time purchase instead of a donation ?
anilshanbhag··on Overwatch's Mei Is Becoming a Symbol of the Hong Kong Resistance
I have been reading r/hongkong on reddit for the past few months. The hong kong protest will likely go down as one of the smartest protests ever - use of lazers, memes, bluetooth based messaging, etc.
anilshanbhag··on WeWork and Counterfeit Capitalism
"The company is losing an enormous amount of money and 'has no path to profitability at scale'." - well if there is no path to profitability, how is it still worth 10-15 billion ?

"If you know Dimon’s actual reputation, him getting suckered isn’t surprising. From what I heard back in 2009, Dimon is a mediocrity who essentially got lucky his bank was too slow to get in on the subprime scam in 2006; he then used his bank’s incompetence at getting into the bubble as justification for how prudent he was." - Dimon is the most respected banker and he led JPM to become the largest bank in the western world. Well somehow that is mediocre.

"WeWork ostensibly became more valuable because Son said it was more valuable, and bought shares for higher prices. " - well isn't this how market pricing works.

And then whole blurb on Counterfeit Capitalism - which in essence described capitalism. The stronger player aims to get market share at the expense of a weaker player.

The author is just another one with a big mouth writing clickbait articles !

anilshanbhag··on The We Company S-1
I for one think those photos / charts are important as otherwise you won't understand how big WeWork is. Couple of days ago I was casually checking Wework locations and was surprised that they have 24 locations in Beijing, 10 in Bangalore, 21 in Tokyo ! They are everywhere.
anilshanbhag··on The L.A. Times’ disappointing digital numbers
The LA times website looks more like a boutique apparel store than a newspaper - there is blue sale signs on a while background. What were they thinking ?
anilshanbhag··on Alphabet Announces Second Quarter 2019 Results [pdf]
I would say it is the rise of digital media. Newspapers had a captive audience, now in the digital world everyone has to compete for attention.

Google rise happened at the same time as digital media - both coinciding with rise of internet.

anilshanbhag··on 40% of the top sellers on Amazon are based in China, according to research
“Why buy a $40 bikini made in America when you can buy a $4 bikini directly from China? For that matter, why buy a $20 bikini made in China but imported by a U.S. company like the Gap when you can buy a $4 bikini directly from China?”

– Alana Semuels, The Atlantic

^ 40% of merchants are in China but the percentage of goods made in China is likely much higher maybe like 75%.

anilshanbhag··on TurboTax Uses Dark Patterns to Trick You into Paying to File Your Taxes
I was seriously considering running ads for FreeTaxUSA out of disgust for TurboTax, it is sad that information flows so slowly through the world :/
anilshanbhag··on How to Train Your OpenAI Five
This is such a pessimistic view of things. As the hero pool expands, the training challenge increases at the rate of n^10. So going from 16 to 25 - we have ~100x blowup in hero combinations, likely requiring significantly more compute to train.
anilshanbhag··on Tesla owners protest over drastic price cuts
Thread on r/teslamotors about this: https://www.reddit.com/r/teslamotors/comments/awvsz7/kelviny...

Two good comments there: 1) "huh... i guess outrage over a price drop falls under the category of "there's no such thing as bad press"" 2) "The news accounts on weibo posted the news in a negative tone. But the comments are mainly against who demand refund over price drop. So I would say it's now viral without much backlash"

anilshanbhag··on Walmart Is Eliminating Greeters. Workers With Disabilities Feel Targeted
In a recent interview on CNBC, Buffett said that Walmart CEO Doug McMillon always carries with him a list of top 10 retailers of each of the past decades just to remind himself of the brutal history of retailing. Walmart took Sears to the cleaners and with status quo, there was a high chance Amazon and Costco will take Walmart to the cleaners. So far, they have done a pretty good job modernizing.
anilshanbhag··on Launch HN: Modern Labor (YC W19) – Paying People to Learn to Code
What is the selection criteria ? I feel many folks who have flexible jobs (waiter, uber driver, etc) would love to join your program, work on assignments for a say 5 hours and do part time work rest of the time.
anilshanbhag··on U.S. Student Debt in ‘Serious Delinquency’ Tops $166B
There is so much waste in universities: bloated admin/it staff , libraries filled with journals/magazines that no one reads, tenure system that doesn't allow you to downsize departments that have no students. Tuition can be reduced, however there is no incentive to do it since students can easily get loans.
anilshanbhag··on Krugman Sees Possible U.S. Recession with Little Fed Wiggle Room
The problem is Fed has learnt its lesson. However, China/ Japan/Europe have learnt nothing and are sitting on their own set of unique problems and these countries will be the likely cause of next recession.
anilshanbhag··on Tesla Q4 2018 Earnings Letter
Looks like everyone is worried about a few percentage points up and down in financial numbers. There are three keys points I took away:

1) We expect the capital spend per unit of capacity for this factory to be less than half of that of our Model 3 line in Fremont.

2) Since Model Y will be built on the Model 3 platform and is designed to share about 75% of its components with Model 3, the cost of the Model Y production line should be substantially lower than the Model 3 line in Fremont, and the production ramp should also be faster.

3) This year, we will continue to implement more automation projects, and our ongoing cost reduction efforts will also make an impact.

In the end if Tesla wants to achieve its mission of moving to world to sustainable energy, costs need to go down. Every quarter they are making improvements and the three points above show significantly potential to further improve costs. The global auto market at $2 trillion is gigantic and good fraction of it is going to be electric - it is really a race to improve costs and Tesla is significantly ahead of the pack so far.

anilshanbhag··on Oracle allegedly underpaid $400M in wages to underrepresented employees
There is no shortage of jobs for someone working at Oracle. If someone feels underpaid, they can just jump ship. I have friends who work at Oracle and their salaries are fairly competitive. I am no Oracle fanboy but this just seems like a bunch of jobless federal employees dragging their feet around.
anilshanbhag··on Inventory of Homes for Sale Is Rising in Silicon Valley and San Francisco
It can't keep going up forever. There is enormous demand around $800k which is still significantly higher than the median price of homes of around $500k Houston/Dallas. As supply increases, prices will fall and hopefully people can buy houses finally.
anilshanbhag··on A Dollar Store Backlash Has Begun
It's fairly obvious that grocery stores would not want to be in poor neighborhoods. This article paints it all as segregation / race issue which is inaccurate where it is really an issue of purchasing power of the community. While many poor neighborhoods are communities of color - dollar stores have their origin and largest footprint in rural America which is predominantly white.
anilshanbhag··on The U.S. Yield Curve Has Inverted
Thats not how it works. If 5-year bond has yield x, for principal P you receive Px for 5 years. With 3-year bond with yield y, you get Py for 3 years. If y > x => after 3 years rates will be lower than y. So you will get lower than P*y for the last 2 years (of 5 years).

anilshanbhag··on US asks allies to drop Huawei
A key difference between Huawei and other Chinese companies like Xiaomi or Alibaba is that they have an opaque shareholding structure with no public investors which makes it hard to know if it is free from the influence of the Chinese government.
anilshanbhag··on PG&E stock plunged 32% after it disclosed a possible link to California’s fire
Article on how California's forest policy might have exasperated the wildfires: https://www.wsj.com/articles/californias-paradise-lost-15420...
anilshanbhag··on US Announces Withdraw from Postal Treaty; International Shipping Prices to Rise
Well you would be surprised that you can buy a sub-dollar item (eg: [1]) on AliExpress and have it shipped all the way from China to your home in US. Just the shipping within US using USPS costs at-least $3.

anilshanbhag··on Short sellers are good for markets
This is not true. Highly shorted stocks are some of the most volatile ones. Anyone can buy a stock that is falling, most stocks have little short interest (<10%) meaning volume when stock going up or down is most people buying or selling down their long position.
anilshanbhag··on Bloomberg News Pays Reporters More If Their Stories Move Markets
Accounting issues are internal issues and can be sorted out - they do not affect a customer who is paying money to buy a server. If however someone spreads a rumour saying your server does surveillance for China - people will just go to another vendor to avoid the fallout.
anilshanbhag··on Bloomberg News Pays Reporters More If Their Stories Move Markets
Their hit piece on SuperMicro is a prime example. With zero hard evidence, they posted a multi-page hit-piece on them permanently damaging their brand developed over past 25 years. The stock is down 45%, added some more salt to US-China tension and the authors are happy with their paycheck.

Libel laws need to be improved to hold shoddy reporters accountable for their work.
