anikom15··on Calculus for Mathematicians, Computer Scientists, and Physicists [pdf]
I think there are usually two: Calculus for scientists and engineers which is analytical and has lots of symbols, and Calculus for everyone else which is more practical.

Math majors might have their own. I also know they end up taking complex Calculus.

anikom15··on Britain's railway privatization was an abject failure
The only issue I have with British rail is the expense. Otherwise, seems rather well done. Much better overall experience than I had with DB at least.
anikom15··on The 'Toy Story' You Remember
Film is only 35 mm or 70 mm large, and the picture itself is slightly smaller than that. Even a tiny amount of dust adds a lot of noise.
anikom15··on Montana becomes first state to enshrine 'right to compute' into law
Laws generally continue across governments anyway.
anikom15··on Montana becomes first state to enshrine 'right to compute' into law
There’s no conflict. DMCA trumps state law.
anikom15··on Montana becomes first state to enshrine 'right to compute' into law
You are also free to alter the device in any way you want as long as it doesn’t start emitting radio waves.
anikom15··on Montana becomes first state to enshrine 'right to compute' into law
What restrictions do European governments impose on the state?
anikom15··on 3M Diskette Reference Manual (1983) [pdf]
They were not in the storage market. They were in the tape market. It just so happens tape was used for storage at the time (floppy is essentially tape in a circular shape).

No more tape storage, no more market for 3M.

anikom15··on The end of the rip-off economy: consumers use LLMs against information asymmetry
I remember how life was before the Internet. It did exactly what it set out to do.
anikom15··on The end of the rip-off economy: consumers use LLMs against information asymmetry
Before Reddit we had hobby forums and before those we had BBS. The anti-spam network runs deep.
anikom15··on Why do some radio towers blink?
The 100 Hz TVs weren’t that common and had other issues. They weren’t strictly superior. TVs were supposed to use a different set of phosphors for 50 Hz that were less flickery at 60 Hz but in practice I don’t know if tube producers bothered to have different sets for the different markets.
anikom15··on Apple Vision Pro upgraded with M5 chip
Watching sports alone is not a hobby enjoyed by most people.
anikom15··on Apple Vision Pro upgraded with M5 chip
Does it matter what the age of the users are? Clearly they are all children regardless.
anikom15··on I Don't Want to Code with LLM's
LLM’s can write documentation well, too.
anikom15··on Frying Eggs and Air Quality Tests
I'm pretty sure a hood is mandatory in the U.S.
anikom15··on Frying Eggs and Air Quality Tests
At least in America, most places will have big enough kitchens that can isolate grease to the area around the stove. Good design will put the stove far enough from living and dining areas.
anikom15··on Japan sets record of nearly 100k people aged over 100
That’s wonderful. I hope I can live so long.
anikom15··on Tomorrow's emoji today: Unicode 17.0
I would be more receptive to endless emojis if Unicode bothered to accept archaic and historical forms of characters as well as deprecating Han unification. It’s rather odd that they reject actual useful things while accepting endless objects that have never been found in any text prior.
anikom15··on Chat Control Must Be Stopped
The Chinese SIM is the key. If you are a foreigner and want to use a phone, either use a burner phone with a Chinese SIM or use international roaming with a non-Chinese SIM. You should not use a Chinese SIM.

Other restrictions are tied to the account which are based on the region of the Apple account, so any phone with a Chinese account will have various restrictions.

anikom15··on Chat Control Must Be Stopped
In Britain, such a thing is not even possible because no Parliament can limit the power of a future Parliament.
anikom15··on How inaccurate are Nintendo's official emulators? [video]
The biggest barrier is needing to modify the games to reduce the chance of triggering epileptic seizures. Nintendo has been good about archiving and knowledge preservation, but modifications may still be difficult or uneconomical.
anikom15··on Intel Arc Pro B50 GPU Launched at $349 for Compact Workstations
Video cards with HDMI don’t support CEC anyway. eARC is only relevant for TV to AVR connexions.
anikom15··on Microsoft Azure: "Multiple international subsea cables were cut in the Red Sea"
The chances of it being due to accident seems astronomically low, but I didn’t realize the intentional cutting was by an actual anchor. That makes sense though, as it would be an easy, discreet method.
anikom15··on Microsoft Azure: "Multiple international subsea cables were cut in the Red Sea"
I meant they are intentional, as opposed to being a side-effect of ‘anchoring’ the boat to keep it from moving.
anikom15··on Microsoft Azure: "Multiple international subsea cables were cut in the Red Sea"
(It’s not actually anchors.)
anikom15··on Bear is now source-available
1 is a breach of license, 2 is not a solution to the problem, it is avoiding the problem.

Plenty of companies develop both proprietary software and contribute to GPL codebases. It’s not at all the dichotomy you think it is.

anikom15··on We already live in social credit, we just don't call it that
Anything that can’t be done while in prison, for starters.
anikom15··on We already live in social credit, we just don't call it that
Some people value freedom more than comfort.
anikom15··on We already live in social credit, we just don't call it that
Your day-to-day life may have been the same, but that does not mean everyone's lives would be.
anikom15··on Bear is now source-available
How does one keep software proprietary while leveraging the GPL (aside from the case of not distributing it)?
