anhner··on Stanford's “Elimination of Harmful Language” Initiative
I laughed at your reply, but not so long ago (though before ChatGPT) I got downvoted to hell for asking a very similar question...
anhner··on Stanford's “Elimination of Harmful Language” Initiative
It feels like this whole list was compiled by one or very few people with no actual expertise.

Why don't they ever consult the people about what words should make it on the list? I bet you most of the terms on that list are not even found offensive by those who they allegedly describe.

anhner··on Ask HN: Best books read in 2022?
Thanks, appreciate it!
anhner··on Ask HN: Best books read in 2022?
> Good Enough Parents

There are at least three books with similar name, can you please say the author as well?

wow, the book is only physical and it costs $60 to get it where I live... (without import taxes)

anhner··on Working with Tailwind CSS every day for 2 years
> "Tailwind is for beginners" just sounds to me like "I don't like this thing because I'm too smart for it"

More like "I don't like this thing because I don't understand it, so I blame it on juniors because I feel superior to them, so I must be right"

anhner··on The Rune Programming Language
Is there any reason the `secret` type can't be implemented in, say, Rust, or is it just Google getting really excited to reinvent the wheel again?
anhner··on High-documentation, low-meeting work culture
> Expecting "specifications" to match "spec" is expecting too much

When I use Google to search the whole web, it DOES match. So how come it doesn't work when I search a small document?

anhner··on Z-library founders arrested in Argentina
> If you live outside of US/Canada and EU it is much harder to obtain books legally

I completely agree and even though I imagine countries outside of these have it much worse, even within the EU you can find massive differences between countries. For example, there is a much smaller selection in Eastern European countries vs. Western, and books are the same price or sometimes even pricier while wages are significantly lower.

anhner··on ZLibrary domains have been seized by the United States Postal Inspection Service
Yes, I am sure the author is glad that he received 30% of a book sale that is shared between hundreds of people...
anhner··on ZLibrary domains have been seized by the United States Postal Inspection Service
Completely agree, and most people in developed countries don't even realise or think about this.
anhner··on An unwilling illustrator found herself turned into an AI model
Except you're not stealing anything and the "thief" didn't steal anything, either. You both just made a copy.
anhner··on Ask HN: Am I getting older or did typing on the iPhone become unbearable?
I played with a friend's Pixel a few weeks ago and I was surprised by how much better the typing experience was. Especially so if you have set up multiple languages. Support for non-mainstream languages is a joke on iPhone. Even the Google keyboard for iOS is shit, but I can't blame that one on Apple.

I can't justify changing my phone now, but I'm highly considering my next phone to be an Android.

> And similar limits (for similar "this shouldn't run that there" reasons) just arrived for the Chromium family.

If only there were another browser other than Safari and Chromium that didn't have those limitations...

anhner··on Does cashless society discriminate against the poor and elderly? (2019)
Daily necessities and daily excercise. For some of these people it's the part of the day they look most forward to.
anhner··on Does cashless society discriminate against the poor and elderly? (2019)
Do you seriously think it's easier for a 80-year-old to hop in a car to go somewhere than walk 10 minutes to the store in a more compact city or take the bus?

Plus, look at the Netherlands, geriatric people who've biked their whole lives and maintained good physical shape have no problem continuing to bike.

anhner··on The Ethereum merge is done
I think you forgot "contributing to climate change by using as much energy as a small country" which may not apply to ethereum anymore, but it sure still applies to bitcoin
anhner··on The Ethereum merge is done
don't worry, it's not "one of the largest technological events in the industry to date", they're just talking out of their ass
anhner··on YouTube currently testing 5 to 10 unskippable ads before video starts
I just remembered, I think I heard Brave Browser also blocks youtube ads. Will update my original comment.
anhner··on YouTube currently testing 5 to 10 unskippable ads before video starts
Also on Android*, unfortunately.

If you want adblocking youtube on iOS I recommend using Safari with the vinegar (paid) extension. (And wipr for general adblocking)

ETA: If I remember correctly, Brave Browser also has ad blocking built in. For youtube as well.

anhner··on “Secrets” about the consumer audio business you may find interesting
Fair enough. I don't know how to delete it so I'll edit it. I genuinely didn't understand what they were trying to say.

However at some point we WILL need a way to differentiate between real humans and AI generated content for farming.

anhner··on Show HN: Make 3D art in your browser using Lisp and math

anhner··on Try Stable Diffusion's Img2Img Mode
I'm using lstein's repository which loads the models and keeps them in memory. Then, for some diffusers 16 steps is enough to come up with a usable image (and using more steps will only add details, most of the time won't change much).

This is for the initial "exploration" step of the process. Once I like an image I typically play with the settings, then in the final step run with a large number of steps (and maybe even use upscaling).

So, default 512x512 size, 16 steps and default for the rest of the settings (I believe 7.5 scale, 0.75 strength).

Having said that, I also tried the official Docker image for stable diffusion and with the default values it generated an image in about 40 seconds.

anhner··on Try Stable Diffusion's Img2Img Mode
also on a 1070, I can generate an image in ~15 seconds, surely you're doing something wrong.
anhner··on What is the cost of a cashless society?
Ah yes, the widespread and highly used GNU Taler
anhner··on Facebook's TikTok-like redesign marks sunset of social networking era

This is the same as saying "in 10 years we'll have flying cars". No, we won't.

anhner··on EU Digital Markets Act, aimed at Google, Apple, Amazon, approved
I think you misunderstand what the sandbox of the operating system does. An app cannot start tracking you 24/7 just because it's sideloaded.
anhner··on EU Digital Markets Act, aimed at Google, Apple, Amazon, approved
You can just keep using an old cell phone. See? I can do it too.

> When Facebook mandates that to install Instagram you must sideload it from the Facebook store and your entire's family's location is being tracked 24/7 I hope you will thank Zuckerberg for all the freedom hes giving you

How will the Instagram app evade iOS's security measures if it's sideloaded?
