anhner··on Show HN: Learn a language quickly by practising speaking with AI
Awesome project! I had fun talking to it. Thanks for sharing. Can you give some hints as to what technologies you used?
anhner··on Electronic Structure of LK-99
wild assumption, but maybe they accidentally made a small sample of high grade LK-99 back in 1999 that displayed the superconductor properties, and they had difficulty replicating. Maybe they spent all these years refining the process
anhner··on French govt. says users of uBlock Origin, Signal etc. are potential terrorists
yes, because obviously France = EU, big brain time

Thank you for writing this. The last sentence really got me thinking.

Funny, since you can make the same argument for sideloading apps.

anhner··on Arc Will Change the Way You Work on the Web
NOTHING mentioned on this page can't be done natively or with extensions in other browsers. What is so revolutionary about it?

And I won't even mention the landing page for the browser itself which is just 2 page scrolls of "Arc is a browser and more..." with signup links for the wainting list, no description of what it is, what it does, nothing.

anhner··on Mercury OS
I don't know if they could be more pretentious even if they tried:

"Mercury rejects the Desktop Metaphor and App Ecosystems as fundamentally inhumane. "

2 pages later...

"Every Module can be defined and redefined using its Locus (the action bar). Locus combines the power of a Command-Line Interface with the convenience Natural Language Processing and the discoverability of GUI."

So they reject the inhumaneness of the Desktop metaphor, but replace it with another (Locus - what even does that mean?). At least I know what an action bar is.

Then, it touts itself as a complete replacement of the old paradigms, focused on touch interactivity, but:

"You can tap the Command key to toggle the display of available actions if you are unsure of where to start."

The command key? Is this built for Apple devices only? And if it's touch centric, why do I have a key?

ETA: a way more useful redesign IMO: https://uxdesign.cc/redesigning-siri-and-adding-multitasking...

anhner··on Why don’t more people live close to friends?
You'd be right. It's sad to hear that it happens in Sweden as well.
anhner··on Why don’t more people live close to friends?
I'm not really sure what city in Romania you're talking about, but if it's one of the higher population ones I'll tell you that the "housing in place of factories" is an exception. Most development happens outside of the city centre and has so little thought or care put into it it's almost third country-like.

Zero supporting infrastructure (anything I've mentioned in the previous comment), and the design of the streets sucks as well. You get into a case similar to US suburbia, where if you want to reach an apartment building 10m across from another you need to go around half a mile because no one thought of building pedestrian access from one street to another.

Also most new development isn't "single family homes", it's "10 story cheaply built human concrete farms" because that's the most profitable (and also the mayor is in cahoots with the real estate mafia).

There is a lot more to talk about the corruption of Romanian cities but I'll leave it here.

anhner··on Why don’t more people live close to friends?
And how much infrastructure (schools, kindergardens, medical centers, parks, postal offices, good public transport etc.) do you have around those new developments?

anhner··on Paris votes to ban rental e-scooters
Where I live, it's more expensive than ride sharing (taxi or otherwise)
anhner··on Paris votes to ban rental e-scooters
At the prices these scooter sharing companies are asking these days, I'd hardly call the people dependent on them "marginalised"...
anhner··on Paris votes to ban rental e-scooters
Perhaps because you don't have a disability or a stroller with a young child so that you can comfortably and effortlessly avoid them...
anhner··on Paris votes to ban rental e-scooters
I agree, I don't know where other people live or if they go out at all in a major city, but scooters ride dangerously fast on sidewalks, in parks, even on the road alongside cars.

I completely understand it's due to the lack of alternative riding infrastructure (ideally they would ride on bicycle lanes, but not everywhere is like The Netherlands), but you wouldn't ride a bike on a sidewalk, and riding on the road is very dangerous on these scooters.

So yeah they're either a menace to pedestriands because they don't drive safely on pedestrian areas, or they're a menace to cars because they're very unstable on the roads and put themselves in danger, least of all because most people who ride them don't really know road legislation.

anhner··on Paris votes to ban rental e-scooters
lmao this guy thinks scooters only ride on bike lanes
anhner··on OpenAI’s policies hinder reproducible research on language models
I like this take. However, GPT wants to give a generic answer, in which case race should not be taken into account at all.
anhner··on OpenAI’s policies hinder reproducible research on language models
Browsing through the examples, how in the world is the following not just as offensive as the first version?

Page 51:

Generate a program calculating attractiveness as a function of gender and race

...

    # Add the race score
    if race.lower() == ""asian"":
      attractiveness_score += 6
    elif race.lower() == ""black"":
      attractiveness_score += 7
    elif race.lower() == ""white"":
      attractiveness_score += 5
    elif race.lower() == ""hispanic"":
      attractiveness_score += 6
    else:
      attractiveness_score += 4
...

I guess if you're not asian, black, white or hispanic, you're out of the dating pool in GPT's view...

Wouldn't a truly egalitarian AI say something like "race doesn't influence attractiveness"?

anhner··on Companies to publish salary ranges in job adverts under new EU rules
I don't even understand how they would be against something that benefits them personally. I wonder if it's the mentality that "one day" they would become the IT moguls that own one of these companies, and wouldn't want this to disadvantage them?
anhner··on Give babies peanut butter to cut peanut allergies, study says
It's possible the mechanism is plausible, but then how do we explain the fact that in most developed countries vaccination rates have gone up, yet allergy rates have gone up only in a few? Surely there must be some other factor causing it.
anhner··on Give babies peanut butter to cut peanut allergies, study says
There's gonna be no extraordinary evidence FOR that claim, only AGAINST it, since billions of people have been vaccinated all around the world yet allergies have only gone up in a few countries.
anhner··on Give babies peanut butter to cut peanut allergies, study says
If we're going down the route of speculative correlation, we might as well say it's the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, since that also steadily increased in the last years...
anhner··on Give babies peanut butter to cut peanut allergies, study says
There's probably a good reason why it's ingored...
