angra_mainyu··on Pope Francis has died
Hit the nail on the head.
angra_mainyu··on Pope Francis has died
Jihadi-sympathizing.... I have no words.

No wonder he never cared when muslims murdered Christians in Nigeria this year. Just 50 in Easter.

angra_mainyu··on Pope Francis has died
Actually fairly simple.

Killing someone for insulting Christianity => goes against Christian theology.

Killing someone for insulting islam/moe => completely in line with Islam.

angra_mainyu··on Pope Francis has died
Literally.

As Christians are being massacred in Africa at the hands of muslims, as Christianity is besieged, all he did was simp for one group in specific and scold everyone else.

Even scolded Greece for not wanting to share the same fate as some Western European countries.

angra_mainyu··on Pope Francis has died
Went to Jesus in a keffiyeh, that in itself is atrocious!!! Then simped for jihadis. Plenty of similar stuff.

It's hard to blame all the catholics that are sighing in relief hoping for a better successor.

angra_mainyu··on Pope Francis has died
Yeah, Hamas gave a note on Francis for his support.
angra_mainyu··on Pope Francis has died
Don't know about that. I'm not a catholic and still view him in a much more favorable light than Francis.

I think maybe it's just some progressives (and related groups) who liked Francis a lot for many of his positions.

angra_mainyu··on Pope Francis has died
Exactly, and as a pope far more respectable.

Even non-catholics like me could sympathize with the dismay of so many catholics at many of the positions/blunders of Francis.

angra_mainyu··on Pope Francis has died
Interesting, I always considered him possibly the most unpopular pope of recent times and understandably so.

If I were to say one pope that many have been fond of, it's probably John Paul II.

angra_mainyu··on Ask HN: Writing an Interpreter in Go or Crafting Interpreters?
I started them but dropped them and went straight for:

- Engineering a Compiler

- Programming Language Pragmatics

- Crafting a Compiler

Quite doable, particularly if you focus on one and supplement with the other two.

Power series are possibly one of the most powerful tools in analysis.

momentum + ecosystem often play a much larger role than actual language merits.
angra_mainyu··on Comparing economic inequality between the Roman Empire and the Han Dynasty
> Nordic countries are made of homogeneous populations

Something like 25%-32% of Sweden is non-ethnic Swedish.

Maybe once upon a time they were homogeneous, but they are probably one of the most heterogeneous countries (outside of the New World countries, which are an entirely different category), though I'd wager most of Western Europe is catching up (see: UK, France, Germany, Belgium, Spain).

angra_mainyu··on How much oranger do red orange bags make oranges look?
A piecewise function is definitely not what I'd call "complicated".
angra_mainyu··on Comparing economic inequality between the Roman Empire and the Han Dynasty
I think there is a bit of a false equivalence going on - Roman elites held immense power with far fewer human rights constraints compared to modern wealthy individuals. No, I do not accept hyperbolic wailing of the "being a wagie is literal slavery" sort.

1) slavery and ownership of lives: they could literally own slaves. No matter how much anyone will want to twist "working for corporate" as slavery, there is simply no comparison to such direct dominion.

2) magisterial power: consuls and praetors could even sentence people to death with barely any resistance. You're welcome to find me an example in the first world.

3) land and resource control: we are in an era where the masses have a much larger share of land and resource ownership compared to then (e.g: latifundia).

4) judicial immunity: yeah, we all know the legal system isn't perfect but you don't have the same extreme levels of abuse you had back then unless again, you appeal to corrupt 3rd world countries.

5) military command: I don't see the billionaires in the first world with their own personal armies.

angra_mainyu··on Lotka–Volterra Equations
The very short gist of it is a trade-off between (low quality, high quantity) and (high quality, low quantity).

R-selection: emphasis on high numbers / growth.

K-selection: emphasis on high quality.

angra_mainyu··on Lotka–Volterra Equations
For me, r/k selection applied to human behavior broke my mind.

Once you see it, you can't unsee it. Be it dating or comparing cultural approaches to relationships, etc.

angra_mainyu··on Europe is trying to leave Starlink behind
>The idea is that (completely reasonably) if you have a “single market” as you describe

I didn't really describe this though. Had I mentioned currencies or trade agreements you might have more of a point.

It's more like automatic work permits for Europeans within Europe, unlimited stays, ease of access to renting + purchasing housing.

angra_mainyu··on A Reddit bot drove me insane
Honestly can't remember, it was years ago when I looked into it.

Here's a good starting point though (trying to remember): https://www.reddit.com/r/shills/comments/3uoxpl/internet_shi...

But yeah, the site changed heavily around 2015-2016, in tandem with content policing growing, subs getting closed, etc.

These days I just use HN tbh.

angra_mainyu··on A Reddit bot drove me insane
I remember going down the "dead internet theory" rabbit hole of reddit and it was gruesome.

Tons of people who are actually paid to go through conversation scripts, push narratives, etc.

angra_mainyu··on Open source and self hostable/private file converter
It's just the average thing you learn going through EE or CompE, plus a knack for turning specs to code.

Don't get me wrong, I find him to be an elite dev, but more for the incredible ability to hold a spec in his head in sufficient detail - and do that multiple times.

angra_mainyu··on Europe is trying to leave Starlink behind
I honestly would not be surprised if we ended up returning to a more fragmented EU, it's becoming quite a mess.

Personally, I absolutely love if we could have something looser, like a "Common European Area": freedom to travel, freedom to study, freedom to live, freedom to work. That's it. No EC/EP or anything like that.

angra_mainyu··on Show HN: memEx, a personal knowledge base inspired by zettlekasten and org-mode
I went the opposite way, I started off as you (with nvim), then moved to other open-source PKMs like Trilium, then used Obsidian and it was love at first sight.

Keeping everything in a git repo makes it easy to sync across devices + backed up.

angra_mainyu··on Go channels are bad (2016)
Haven't read the article but it sounds like a waitgroup would suffice.
angra_mainyu··on Show HN: memEx, a personal knowledge base inspired by zettlekasten and org-mode
I have yet to find a solid obsidian competitor, plugins + git repo really do cover most things.

angra_mainyu··on Nix Derivations, Without Guessing
To be fair, that is not problematic at all and most definitely not what I think is the issue with Nix adoption/learning curve.

Personally, it's the fact that there are 57698 ways of doing something and when you're new to Nix you're swarmed with all the options and no clear way of choosing where to go. For example, the docs still use a shell.nix for a dev shell but most have moved to a flake-based method...

I always recommend starting with devenv.sh from the excellent Domen Kozar and then slowly migrating to bare Nix flakes once you're more accustomed.

angra_mainyu··on Nix Derivations, Without Guessing
Controversial, but I found just going through the docs, attempting to write my own flake, throwing it at ChatGPT and asking it to review it and give me feedback was enough to get started.

I never ask it for code, just to review code - keeps me sharp and makes the iteration cycles faster.
