is that open source?
andygeorge··on Show HN: I'm open-sourcing my game engine
fwiw they're called "IO games" and they're - even still - not-unpopular games
andygeorge··on Google OAuth is broken (sort of)
> Just use an integer or GUID or something as primary key

We're not talking random apps and services, we're talking about the big providers that are commonly used for SSO, where "just change ur primary key" is wildly impractical at best, and more likely impossible at their scale. That ship, as it were, has already sailed.

> Unless you're sending a verification email for every sign-in...

Yes, absolutely do this! This is what Slack does, and what we do at my current employer (defined.net). "Magic link" email + TOTP is pretty slick.

andygeorge··on 25 hours of Xcode Cloud now included with the Apple Developer Program
> happens to own a cloud

macOS hardware or virtualization is beaucoup bucks in every cloud. As I said, this is not just a GitHub (or Microsoft) problem.

> charging 3x the regular pricing for this is absurd

macOS virtualization is pricey by Apple's design. This is not just a GH problem

andygeorge··on Oxlint – JavaScript linter written in Rust
there's a reason `cargo install` is usually the last distribution option that maintainers of rust software provide ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
andygeorge··on Oxlint – JavaScript linter written in Rust
> I just tell people, first install rust, then just `cargo install`

local compilation may work for you and other individuals, but "just cargo install" can immediately run into issues if you're trying to deploy something to things that aren't dev workstations

> npm and cargo are absolutely the same category of tool

as a dev tool? absolutely. as a production distribution solution? definitely not

andygeorge··on Oxlint – JavaScript linter written in Rust
Cargo is still a dev tool and isn't a great distribution solution.
andygeorge··on Google Promises Unlimited Storage; Cancels; Tells Journalist Life's Work Deleted
I've worked at multiple places that unfortunately paid for CF services (and support), and have consistently had trouble with them. And that doesn't include just general CF service instability for end users.
andygeorge··on Google Promises Unlimited Storage; Cancels; Tells Journalist Life's Work Deleted
you're only skeptical of CF now? They've been garbage for years in terms of service and support
andygeorge··on Telecom Industry Is Mad Because the FCC Might Examine High Broadband Prices
I've had charter and comcast over the years and they're both pretty equally awful

andygeorge··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
wait is this where "green with envy" will come from?????
andygeorge··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
fwiw it hasn't been called "OSX" for awhile now
andygeorge··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
they could call it "apple blue" and charge a few bucks a month for it. People love that stuff
andygeorge··on Buggy animation in Atlassian Bitbucket is wasting half a CPU core at all times
Dunno, I use FF on all my PCs with a variety of configurations and do not experience the GitHub slowdown referenced earlier.
andygeorge··on Buggy animation in Atlassian Bitbucket is wasting half a CPU core at all times

andygeorge··on This page knows your battery charge level (unless you're using Firefox)
> Doesn't work without Javascript.

That's fine maybe? Imo it's totally reasonable to expect end-users to have some sort of js support

andygeorge··on This page knows your battery charge level (unless you're using Firefox)
Conveniently blocks all APIs
andygeorge··on The Radiating Programmer
> Writing can have such a better signal to noise ratio

It can, but in my experience with employers who push async as primary communication, the noise is MUCH higher than regularly scheduled stand-ups.

andygeorge··on The Radiating Programmer
Same. I don't want to have to write OR read those reports, and a quick daily stand-up is far better, IMO, for effective communication.
