andrewinardeer··on France targets Australia-style social media ban for children next year
Because parents can't or won't monitor their kids internet usage 24/7.
andrewinardeer··on France targets Australia-style social media ban for children next year
Why did you cherry pick advertisments from my reply and run with that?

It clearly isn't just a singular data point that is a True or False that would include a site in the ban.

Perhaps it should be, "If I had a 12 year old daughter, do I want her to have easy access to pornography, self harm material and the ability to receive private messages from a 45 year old registered sex offender?"

I get your point - "Where is the line in the sand?" and it's a valid point but no need to argue in bad faith.

andrewinardeer··on Tell HN: Happy New Year
Okay, not unthinkable but I would think it is very difficult. I'm hoping a country who has never won a WC to be champions this year. Croatia and Netherlands have done well in the last few. Cape Verde and Curaçao have also never won.

What's wrong with right wing populist movements? They come and go just like left wing populist movements. The pendulum swinging across both the political spectrums over election cycles is a thing of beauty.

Are you also harvesting teens data and selling it to the highest bidder or using it for target advertisements?
andrewinardeer··on Ask HN: Anyone still using RSS feeds?
Yes. It's how I browse HN.

Rss for articles +25 points to Pushover onto my phone.

andrewinardeer··on Tell HN: Happy New Year
I wonder what events will transpire that will shape our world by this time next year.

There will be a new FIFA World Cup champion unless Argentina does the unthinkable.

No doubt regime change somewhere. Probably a massive cyber event that cripples critical infra. A magnitude 8+ earthquake in a populated area?

andrewinardeer··on Swapping SIM cards used to be easy, and then came eSIM
To clarify, I went to the hotel, she got through (eventually) and went to a conference. I collected her luggage. We met back at the hotel later that evening.
andrewinardeer··on Iran Protests Enter Third Straight Day as Students Join In
Until they do.
andrewinardeer··on ManusAI Joins Meta
Nothing about how much Meta paid for Manus. Is this an actual accuquisition?
andrewinardeer··on Swapping SIM cards used to be easy, and then came eSIM
Did this yesterday on Android when arriving into Indonesia. While my wife waited in immigration, I used the Smart Gates. I downloaded an eSim via Airalo in just 90 seconds, providing me with enough data to send her a "good luck" message and let her know I'd see her at the hotel if she cleared immigration.
andrewinardeer··on Ask HN: What is the international distribution/statistics of HN visitors?
Shouldn't you be sleeping? You've had a busy 24 hours.
andrewinardeer··on Ruby 4.0.0
It truly is Christmas.
andrewinardeer··on Nvidia to buy assets from Groq for $20B cash
Headline is incorrect.

NVIDIA isn't buying Groq.

It's a non exclusive deal for inference tech. Or am I reading it incorrectly?

andrewinardeer··on My 2026 Open Social Web Predictions
Probably because of the pile on a few months ago about "no X links in my subreddit" because Musk is allegedly a Nazi.
andrewinardeer··on The ancient monuments saluting the winter solstice
Where I live, I find it wild that there is a 5.75-hour difference between the summer and winter solstices, nearly a quarter of a whole day.
andrewinardeer··on The WhatsApp Whisperer
What are there so many green usernames here? Has this thread been brigaded?

Only if you let it.

andrewinardeer··on FTX insider Caroline Ellison has been moved out of prison
Is it deliberate that I've never seen a media outlet publish a flattering photo of her?

That said, when the movie is inevitably released they'll probably cast Scarlett Johansson or Cailee Spaeny as her.

andrewinardeer··on Australia begins enforcing world-first teen social media ban
It's crazy that social media is banned but kids are still subject to gambling ads prior to or after watching the footy on free to air TV.
andrewinardeer··on Someone at YouTube Needs Glasses: The Prophecy Has Been Fulfilled
> I should not have to PAY MORE for a product that doesn't damage my health.

Is this the same way of saying your mental health is important to you but you're not prepared to pay a service money to protect said mental health and support creators you like?

andrewinardeer··on Google's new 'Aluminium OS' project brings Android to PC
Any decade now.
andrewinardeer··on Implications of AI to schools
Ironic that one of the biggest AI companies is also the platform to offer a service to protect yourself from allegations of using it.
andrewinardeer··on 'Suddenly exposed' DOGE employees fear prosecution after Musk abandoned them
Sorry for being so cynical, but that's just wishful thinking these days.
andrewinardeer··on The realities of being a pop star
Sorry for the bogan nomenclature.

I mean "fell upwards". Gave it a shot for shits and giggles and made it.

andrewinardeer··on The realities of being a pop star
I couldn't think of anything worse than to be known world wide.

You couldn't go out in public without being hounded or swamped by people. The parasocial relationships people form with you can put your life in danger.

Even worse is being a politician - particularly at a global leader level. Surely there has been an average Joe who has shithoused their way into being a leader of a significant country. Once you do that, with politics being as toxic as it is, for the rest of your days you can be a marked person.

andrewinardeer··on Streaming platform Twitch added to Australia's teen social media ban
And social media companies are compelled to deactivate any existing <16 years old accounts. Not just creating.
