andrewgjohnson··on Sigil
It's always disappointing to me when I come across something that is a better version of an unfinished side project of mine.

Well done.

andrewgjohnson··on What advice would you give your 16 year old self?
Actively pursue girls and recreational drugs more than you are.

Hah, I'd never considered that.

Company idea: Dropbox but with a default folder that is green rather than blue or manilla.

Signed up, the desktop client seems a lot clunkier than Dropbox (I use Windows 7 for those wondering)

I don't really use any online backup service all that much -- all my docs are in Google Docs which I guess is Google Drive now and I'm a single dude so I don't have hoards of kids videos & photos. After seeing this and signing up I was planning on installing this on my mom's computer (currently she's using Dropbox -- down to 2GB after not wanting to pay for more than that) but don't know if I'm going to follow through just because this seems so clunky and un-intuitive.

Odd, it seems Dropbox somewhat perfected the model of "here's your folder (it's blue not manilla so you remember which one it is) just put your stuff in it and we'll back it up online and sync it up with the blue folders on your other computers" -- the "Default Sync Folder" is a real bummer.

andrewgjohnson··on $700/hr for legal advice vs. $100/hr for a top software engineer – why?
The problem is there's no lawyers charging extremely low prices in third world countries and it's exceptionally unlikely that you would hire a lawyer that isn't within an hour's drive from you. The same can't be said for programmers.
andrewgjohnson··on Ask HN: Why does this site use center and table tags?
a) Agree b) It's fast? More markup = faster? Definitely not the case c) You mention HTML5 & CSS3 which some browsers don't have full support for but considering none of those features would be required for HN I don't understand this point at all. How far back to you need to go to find a browser that doesn't support "background-color"? d) Why is this a pro? e) What context would it not be considered overkill? Completely arbitrary decision.
andrewgjohnson··on 10 Million hits a day with Wordpress using a $15 server
Great makes a lot of sense thanks for expanding. Like you touch on I think price is the big issue for most people who aren't looking to build for 15mm/month but are just looking to sleep at night knowing that getting to the frontpage of digg, reddit, techcrunch, hackernews, etc won't sink the ship.

After reading this my question is: will his system work on a small instance on ec2 instead of micro? It sounds as though the majority of issues you're describing are micro-specific and while there's a thousand "tune wordpress" blog posts out there it sounds like this one is a good idea minus the use of a micro instance.
