anbop··on Advertising Is a Cancer on Society
Eat all the sugar you want... just make sure your bank account is full when you have your heart attack.
anbop··on Epstein Arrest Leaves Top Technology Figures Racing to Distance Themselves
Bill Gates is not a nice person, but I will believe almost everything before believing that he was raping underaged girls on a secret island.
anbop··on Epstein Arrest Leaves Top Technology Figures Racing to Distance Themselves
That’s true in average cases but at the highest levels of power, having inconvenient people killed is just another power like getting caviar delivered by private jet.
anbop··on Stripe subsidiary plans to open office in Baltimore
The perpetual debt of the US federal and state governments makes some people forget that governments can actually be in the black. Governments like Norway, Singapore, Brunei, and Saudi Arabia run huge sovereign wealth funds that lend, for debt or equity, huge amounts of money to all kinds of companies.
anbop··on YouTube faces creator backlash
But Google has the resources to fight Apple and Microsoft, in the markets and in the courts, if denied a level playing field in a way that is illegal or bad optics. YouTube content creators, and content creators in general, have no defense against this since the big aggregation companies like YouTube, Twitter, and Instagram have market power over hundreds of millions of creators instead of just a few powerhouses.
anbop··on Slack was down
You’re supposed to be soft on a company during an outage? That’s exactly when you’re supposed to be considering alternatives!

Similar peeve is when people say “don’t politicize this tragedy.” No, politics is how we decide to act, a tragedy is exactly when we should be the most political. The Boeing 737 crashes is when we should excoriate and eliminate the rot at Boeing and the FAA, not six years later after some respectful silence.

anbop··on MIT Fellow Says Facebook ‘Lifted’ His Ideas for Libra Cryptocurrency
MIT is supposed to create ideas that are “lifted” by others. Produce your patent or shut up.
anbop··on How Much Water Do You Need to Drink?
Along those lines you could say “when you want something sweet eat something sweet” but that wouldn’t be good for your long term health.
anbop··on Amazon.com Announces Second Quarter Sales Up 20%
And “assets” as accountants define them are an almost useless metric for knowledge-based companies.
anbop··on Math versus Dirty Data
Is it the new normal to vent about your job on a public blog post, talking about how it's not very exciting and how it involves mostly "poop-smithing," and how you'd be thinking of quitting if you didn't have other stuff you were doing, and for the company to be totally OK with that?
anbop··on Facebook revenue beats estimates; discloses antitrust probe
I use one for my personal use. Another for video calls for my kid. Another for snooping on girls I slept with when I was single. A fourth for apps that want third party login.
anbop··on Facebook revenue beats estimates; discloses antitrust probe
Why would they lie? These numbers hurt their stock price because they suggest that future growth is capped.
anbop··on Attorney general: Americans should accept security risks of encryption backdoors
I’m not the person you’ve been talking to earlier
anbop··on Mitchell Feigenbaum (1944–2019), 4.66920160910299067185320382…
He’s one of the great minds of his generation but his insecurity complex is so severe that he constantly needs to boast about himself and his achievements to an extent that is unbecoming even in a professional athlete. Tilting his (extremely interesting) book “A New Kind of Science” and saying that it would take a place next to Chemistry and Physics as a discipline is one such example. Even in this eulogy to a dead friend he is content marketing Mathematica’s numerical precision.
anbop··on Mitchell Feigenbaum (1944–2019), 4.66920160910299067185320382…
I normally find Stephen Wolfram insufferable (and he still is, in this article) but boy what a privilege it is to have a friend who will eulogize us like this. If I was an intellectual associate of Wolfram’s I’d ask him to write this article for me to read before I died.
anbop··on Attorney general: Americans should accept security risks of encryption backdoors
But given a hypothetical question like “What play should a football team run when they are on 2nd down and 3 with 2:19 in the 3rd Quarter while leading by 3 points” — wouldn’t a professional NFL coach’s opinion be given more credence than mine? Einstein may have been wrong on quantum mechanics but if you had 1000 physics question it would be hard to think of a better person to ask.
anbop··on Justice Department to Open Broad, New Antitrust Review of Big Tech Companies
Government spend can't create a Google. Google depends on huge compensation packages to pampered engineers who get sushi for lunch and Segways for entertainment. A government facility of this nature would be political suicide.
anbop··on Justice Department to Open Broad, New Antitrust Review of Big Tech Companies
But if you look at the things that were considered "science fiction" back in the day, like video phones, or augmented reality glasses... stuff like Facebook's Portal or Apple's ARKit or Microsoft's HoloLens really do fit the bill. The basic science is done in academia but there's no academic team that would create something as idiot-proof as Facetime.
anbop··on Attorney general: Americans should accept security risks of encryption backdoors
That’s not a logical argument by Franklin, it’s his opinion. There’s no axiomatic reason why Ben Franklin’s opinion is more correct than anyone else’s, even William Barr’s.
anbop··on An Analysis of WeChat’s Realtime Image Filtering in Chats
China could easily go beyond its border without consequence. Look at how easily Russia took Crimea.
anbop··on Airlines are finally fixing the middle seat
I flew in a lot of middle seats and it’s because I was a young unattached guy booking last minute trips at high prices.
anbop··on Building a Reflow Oven
It's extremely irreponsible of this author to not list a respirator as a requirement for handling ceramic fiber, given that the audience is likely to be unfamiliar with the materials.
anbop··on QuickBooks Cloud Hosting Firm iNSYNQ Hit in Ransomware Attack
Why would someone use a third party to host Quickbooks? Won’t Intuit host it?
anbop··on Microsoft’s Q4 earnings and 2020 expectations
Emotional expression is an important component of high bandwidth business communication.
anbop··on Amazon Accidentally Sold $13k Camera Gear for $100 on Prime Day
Well if I listed a house for $60,000 instead of $600,000, but I owned $1 trillion of houses and was selling several hundred of them every single second of the day, then sure there isn't anything wrong with buying one for $60K.
anbop··on Show HN: PCBs with Full-Color Graphics
The market is niche but not necessarily the profit pool. Dell buys PCBs from Foxconn who buys the components in large bidding processes from commodity vendors who probably are eking out basis points of profit. Whereas if someone’s making this for a hobby project or a piece of home decor they might be willing to pay $20 for the printing. Could be a very nice profit stream.
anbop··on Notre-Dame came closer to collapsing than people knew
I don’t know what they meant by closer than people knew. I heard the news, saw the pictures, and went to bed assuming it would be completely gone by the morning.
anbop··on Ask HN: What is the best chair for developers?
+1 on Steelcase Leap, bought mine used for $400.
anbop··on Dean and Deluca Is Closing Its Stores
The foods here used to be special but in the last 10 years seemed more focused on tourists.
anbop··on Ask HN: Refusing to join meetings that require proprietary programs
I would not hire a vendor who presented such odd requirements to me as I would see it as trying to use my company as a vehicle for your personal crusade. The installation point is valid, but I would expect it to be nulled by offering you company-owned hardware to work on.
