Most of my experience is with Python, Bash, HTML, CSS/SCSS. I am starting to learn low-level systems languages like C and Rust, with a focus on Rust. Im also getting myself familiar with relational databases. I'm still getting a feel for what I actually want to do, so I experiment a lot, just like to learn how stuff works.

I'm a junior developer, kinda seeking a mentor or someone to work on projects with. If you're interested, email me at eminent_went_0d@icloud.com.

Wow I didn't realize things were so black and white

Youve raised some good points. I'll take them into consideration.

This is really insightful, I often write little bash scripts to solve annoyances on my system. But I never realize that those bash scripts could be the seed to plant something larger, like an actual full featured tool that solves the original problem and also grabs other related problems as well. And I would love to chat! It would be really helpful to back-and-forth with someone and gain new insights. Please email me at eminent_went_0d@icloud.com!

I don't think I'm in the position to try making a living off a service yet, I just want a little passive income. I'm still a junior developer. Maybe something like $400/month. But I despise the idea of viewing users/customers as a revenue source first, and human beings second. And I don't have a specific service/project in mind either, so feel free to be creative.
anbardoi··on Ask HN: How to stay open source and also make money?
I understand I'm not under obligation to, but I do feel obliged to make software that people actually want to support, rather than just playing another bill for another means-to-an-end. And Ill definitely be transparent about my desire to make money, I just want to be non-scummy about it, and approach it in a way that is both effective and honest.
anbardoi··on Ask HN: Junior developer here, seeking a mentor
Any servers you recommend? I just posted here because I know theres a lot if high-level engineers here, and I'd love to meet someone I could help and learn from. Discord would definitely also be a good avenue.

Thanks, I appreciate your support! I sent you an email. I'm looking forward to hearing back!

I've been using Arch Linux for about 6 months now— on both my work laptop and desktop at home I've spent a LOT of time adjusting both of them for their use-case. My laptop is mainly for dev stuff, and my home desktop is the same but with extra tweaks and optimizations for gaming.

I use KDE for a desktop environment, however its increasingly starting to annoy me. I've honestly spent most of my time optimizing and ricing it on both devices. I use Neovim for an editor with nvim-tree.

But after all this ricing and adjusting, I've pretty much run out of stuff to do. Thats why I'm hoping to meet people that might want to work together on stuff

anbardoi··on I'm giving up on open source
Ahhh okay makes sense. Yeah its truly grotesque. But money is a different kind of game. They see OSS as low hanging fruit. Idk if licenses like GPL would keep them at bay, but I think it might be an avenue more OSS developers should go down
anbardoi··on I'm giving up on open source
Is that really how source-available works? I mean whos stopping me from screenshotting and using tesseract or some other OCR tool to get the actual no-bullshit source code
anbardoi··on I'm giving up on open source
That is, if "source-available" means that I can adjust the code to what I want it to be. If not, then it is not what I want.
anbardoi··on I'm giving up on open source
For me, they're both included. I have no qualms with paying for good software if I have the ability to learn how it works and customize it to my liking. What I absolutely loathe, is closed-source that is useful to me, but with obviously lazy design elements that I dont get to customize.
anbardoi··on I'm giving up on open source
You know, I often wonder if I'll ever receive an encouraging or somewhat kind response on this forum. That's probably a lot to ask from the internet in general. But could you elaborate on what reason you mean? You mean learning how the software works, or just because it's free?
anbardoi··on I'm giving up on open source
I understand the sentiment for this article, but I disagree with the part about using open source mainly to avoid paying for software.

I use open source because I like having the ability to learn how it works. If I can't know how a program works, I can't have control over it. It is not my tool, I am its user.

I also just like learning how technology works in general, and non-free software is generally difficult to share the source code looking from the perspective of a company. Also in my experience, open source software is generally a more fun experience when using it. It gives me a sense of freedom in an increasingly restrictive world.

anbardoi··on I love programming but I hate the programming industry
It's mind-boggling to me just how greed-driven thr comments are in this thread. Wish software was about making something cool anymore
anbardoi··on Ask HN: Encrypted File as a Login Method
Thank you for the change of perspective and encouragement. I'm wanting the 1.0 announcement to be an admin blog post from the platform itself.. That way after people read about it, well, they're already there and can try it out or explore the site if they want to.

One of my big concerns is moderation and legal, as I know cybercriminals/scammers will see my platform as a viable tool for their operations. I'm thinking blocking known malicious IP's, maybe some kind of regex system. Ill still new to this so if you have an suggestions, I am desperate to hear them.

anbardoi··on Ask HN: Encrypted File as a Login Method
Being an anonymous coward in some countries is better than the alternative. I'm still going to try to do the encrypted file login lol this isn't for personal financial gain or even for some social clout I can gloat about. This is for me to say I did something cool or beneficial for the world. If I could get this to work and gain traction, it will raise the bar for user privacy and maybe put an end to the obvious human data mining operation invading the entirety of the web. In thinking of maybe even doing a SSO service using the same security method.
anbardoi··on Ask HN: Encrypted File as a Login Method
But there's no email or username. No identifier. That's what makes it useful from a privacy standpoint. That, and the only way a user can login is if they upload a file that generates the matching checksum in my database. Whereas with hashed passwords, there's more avenues for an attacker to reveal the actual password. If all they have is only a sha256 sum, they'll probably just give up. Idk maybe I'm wrong and this is pointless to pursue. And I'm not sure what bcrypt or scrypt is, I just thought sha256 would be sufficient for the use case.
anbardoi··on Ask HN: Encrypted File as a Login Method
Right, that is my intention. I loathe the current software landscape of hand-holding and unhealthy dependency on a company to properly handle a user's data. With this method, the user is responsible for their own security, and I just provide a secure way for them to blog anonymously with virtually no risk of their posts being associated with them. Thats my vision anyway.
anbardoi··on Ask HN: Encrypted File as a Login Method
The service I'm creating is an anonymous blogging website with a '.dev' extension. It will be made for developers, who are more technically inclined.

The reason I am intentionally not considering user device security, is because with this method, I intend to give users ownership of their data. They own their computer, they own their security. I just want to provide a secure means of blogging where they dont have to worry about my server being compromised, because if it is, the attacker will only see sha256 checksums associated with user posts/comments. The posts/comments themselves will be publicly available just by visiting the website.

anbardoi··on Ask HN: Encrypted File as a Login Method
I appreciate the resources, I read each of them. The file is essentially no different from a password, but the major difference here is that I would not store the file on my server, nor the decryption keys. Only the sha256 checksum of the file. An attacker can do very little with a checksum associated with user data. I know this is a novel approach, but thats why I'm trying this on a project that is hardly sensitive as an anonymous blogging platform. If there are vulnerabilities, the data gained by an attacker would not even be very valuable.
anbardoi··on Ask HN: Why do news websites think this is a good idea?
That line you said has been echoing in my head the past couple days.. "dont't expect reasonable actions from unreasonable people".

It's not even that they're probably inherently unreasonable, it's that they CHOOSE to be unreasonable because they must be to increase revenue. If there's anything in the world that can return man to his primitive roots, it's money.

anbardoi··on Ask HN: Is there a way to customize the stories on Hacker News?
Yes! This!

This could definitely be done in a user script, or if someone's feeling especially bold, make a whole extension that redirects any paywalled news site to the archive.is equivalent

anbardoi··on Ask HN: Is there a way to customize the stories on Hacker News?
Nice work. I use Firefox but am gladly bumping this
anbardoi··on Former Nouveau Lead Developer Joins Nvidia, Continues Work on Open-Source Driver
This is a bold move by nvidia. But I think they can afford supporting Nouveau at this point, since theyve got all that new revenue from AI. Maybe open source DLSS is on the horizon?
anbardoi··on How the American Workforce Got Hooked on Adderall
Yeah, if you guys could stop posting paywalled/account-walled articles, that'd be great.
anbardoi··on Ask HN: What software sparks joy when using?
For iOS apps:

Feeeed - completely customizable RSS reader with no data collection.

Widgy - Custom widgets on iOS. Not talking like "mmmm widget green now" I'm talking custom javascript in the widget, API calls, custom symbols, colors, transparency, sizing, whatever you need. The complexity of photoshop almost.

iSH: Alpine terminal emulator. Its surprising what you can do with it.

For desktop:

Tesseract: FOSS OCR(optical character recognition). Can convert text on images to actual encoded text.

OpenRGB: FOSS interaction with a diverse set of RGB devices

MultiMC: Minecraft Java edition custom launcher

anbardoi··on Ask HN: Is a masters in ML worth it?
I'm stacking my chips in the study of quantum computing. It might be fruitless, it might not. I just think its really cool. Plus it feels like I'm casting a wide net. If quantum does become more practical, what is every tech company in the world going to gravitate to, no matter their field?

I hate how much I like this
anbardoi··on Ask HN: Is Advertising Becoming Obsolete?
This is a pretty good analogy. But I think that I may be part of the majority in this context. It would be like the avocado farmers paying somebody to put avocados in your kitchen, even though you hate them.
