analogj··on Show HN: Hatchet – Extracts unique unsubscribe links from mailing lists in Gmail
Hey HN,

I got frustrated with the amount of daily spam in my Gmail "Promotions" tab -- especially since it made searching for email basically impossible. While there are services that will help me unsubscribe from all the mailing lists I'm signed up to, they wanted unfettered access to my Google account, which I wasn't going to give.

I wrote a open source tool called hatchet which will access your Gmail account using IMAP, find the latest unsubscribe link for each unique email sender, and write it all to a csv/spreadsheet file.

You can actually clone/checkout a "merged" PR provided by Github:

git checkout --force refs/remotes/pull/119/merge

They generate it async behind the scenes, so it may not be immediately available after your PR is opened, and changes to master may be delayed.

analogj··on Drawbridge – Bastion/Jump host tunnelling management
A while back I made a reddit post asking for help finding a tool that would manage/generate ssh config files for all our jump/bastion hosts.

There was some interest (and great discussion), however no-one submitted a tool that solved the actual problem.

Since that post, I've worked on an open source tool that implents the features of our closed source application. Its available now on github: https://github.com/AnalogJ/drawbridge

Here are some of its features:

  - Single binary (available for macOS and linux), only depends on `ssh`, `ssh-agent` and `scp`
  - Uses customizable templates to ensure that Drawbridge can be used by any organization, in any configuraton
  - Helps organize your SSH config files and PEM files
  - Generates SSH Config files for your servers spread across multiple environments and stacks.
	- multiple ssh users/keypairs
	- multiple environments
	- multiple stacks per environment
	- etc..
  - Can be used to SSH directly into an internal node, routing though bastion, leveraging SSH-Agent
  - Able to download files from internal hosts (through the jump/bastion host) using SCP syntax
  - Supports HTTP proxy to access internal stack urls.
  - Lists all managed config files in a heirarchy that makes sense to your organization
  - Custom templated files can be automatically generated when a new SSH config is created.
	- eg. Chef knife.rb configs, Pac/Proxy files, etc.
  - Cleanup utility is built-in
  - `drawbridge update` lets you update the binary inplace.
  - Pretty colors. The CLI is all colorized to make it easy to skim for errors/warnings

I'm always open to PR's and feature requests. I'd also love to hear any feedback you guys may have.

analogj··on GitMask – Develop Anonymously
yeah, I guess thats how Docker does it. Automated builds tied to a github repo.
analogj··on GitMask – Develop Anonymously
To be honest, I wrote GitMask for myself. Yep,if anonymity is really important to you, a VPN and/or TOR is required. GitMask just ensures that you don't unintentionally leak personal info. GitMask is open source, so if you don't trust me to run it, just run it yourself.

Spam is a potential issue. All PR's reference gitmask.com so maintainers have someone to message if they get flooded.

analogj··on GitMask – Develop Anonymously
I think that's pushing past the goals of GitMask. As much as possible I want to leave the code as is, as the developer intended, while stripping all personally identifiable information and metadata.
analogj··on GitMask – Develop Anonymously
fixed the capitalization. I'll have to figure out whats locking up the scrollbar in the CSS though.
analogj··on GitMask – Develop Anonymously
:) Thanks!
analogj··on GitMask – Develop Anonymously
thanks, fixed.
analogj··on GitMask – Develop Anonymously
Yeah, adding a privacy/retention policy would be a good idea.

Under the hood its pretty simple (and open source), just an AWS lambda squashing the commits and stripping metadata before pushing to Github. Potentially you could tie the commit to an IP address, but I'm not logging any of that info.

I'm not really sure how I can prove that the code I'm running is the code you'll find on GH though.

analogj··on GitMask – Develop Anonymously
that's an interesting idea, thanks :)
analogj··on GitMask – Develop Anonymously
haha I can understand that. Thanks for the support.
analogj··on GitMask – Develop Anonymously
I get that, but at the same time, there's a ton of reasons why a developer might not want their name attached to a bunch of code.

As a maintainer myself, I can respect that. If the PR is important enough, I'm more than happy to merge it without knowing the author (with some additional tweaking if necessary).

analogj··on GitMask – Develop Anonymously
I don't really want to go down the rate limit route quite yet, but it could be an option.
analogj··on GitMask – Develop Anonymously
Fair enough, the examples could use some work. I kinda just threw the landing page together without thinking about it much.

I'll take another pass at it.

analogj··on GitMask – Develop Anonymously
Thanks!
analogj··on GitMask – Develop Anonymously
weird. What browser are you using?
analogj··on GitMask – Develop Anonymously
hmm, good to know. I'll have to look into that
analogj··on GitMask – Develop Anonymously
Good point.
analogj··on GitMask – Develop Anonymously
creating another account is an option, but Gitmask also strips github comments, strips the author info (which comes from your ENV and .git config), and squashes the commits.

Just in case there's any data leakage.

analogj··on GitMask – Develop Anonymously
To be honest, I was worried about that as well. But it's been pretty good so far. Gitmask always adds a comment in the PR mentioning where the PR is comming from, so in the event of any projects/repos getting spammed, I can hopefully disable PR's being opened against those projects.
analogj··on GitMask – Develop Anonymously
woah, this is my project. Glad you guys find it interesting. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have.

analogj··on Firebase is Joining Google
Theres definitely that fear of vendor lockin right now, because theres no standard yet. But on the other hand, the possibilities that firebase opens up are definitely worth that lockin for some users. There's going to be other alternatives sooner or later, now its just about determining how much you trust Google to keep firebase alive as is.
