analog··on An apology to open source
Agreed, but he's based in the UK, so the 'we own all your IP' thing doesn't apply here. On company time yes, in your own time I believe not. Your own time would not be "in the course of his or her employment."

analog··on An apology to open source
He built it during University, so before he started working for the employer. They may have a legitimate business concern, but that doesn't change the fact that it's Nick's IP and he can do what he wants with it.

I did a quick google search and it was one of the first references that came up. I only have to provide a citation that CAM sometimes works to disprove Nursies assertion that CAM "doesn't work".
analog··on Ask HN: Freelancing, where, how and should I?
I started out on Elance many years ago and to be honest it's pretty tough to make a decent living off.

If I were you I'd try getting out and about locally and meet people face to face. Lots of developers have too much work that they'd be happy to load off onto someone else who's competent. Try looking for local developer meetups or user groups.

You say you're based in Europe but you don't mention where, some places are better than others for finding work. Spain is pretty bad for example from what I hear whereas the UK is pretty good. Also in a particular country the number of jobs and quality will vary from city to city.

You could do worse than go to one of the places where there is a lot of development work, getting a courier job or anything and meet people until you get the work you want.

How about, for unauthorised access to have occurred, the data accessed must have been 'secured', with 'secured' defined according to industry practices.

If I told a client that I had 'secured' their website, but access was available by incrementing an integer, they could sue me and they would win.

Well I suggest you take up your objections with the American Cancer Society because that's where the quote is from. Here's their contact form.

Well he was certainly a much more likeable character than Weev, but he also didn't believe that what he did was wrong.

And really, who did Weev harm with this?

analog··on It’s a part of my paleo fantasy, it’s a part of my paleo dream
Nice use of selective quoting. Heres another.

"Other aspects of naturopathic medicine, like healthy nutrition, have been shown to lower the risk of illnesses such as heart disease and cancer. Some aspects of naturopathic medicine may be useful when used along with conventional medical treatment."

Like I said, you're simply choosing to ignore the evidence. If you'd like to stay ignorant of it then that's your right and your privilege.

analog··on It’s a part of my paleo fantasy, it’s a part of my paleo dream
"That depends on what the condition is, how trustworthy the anecdotes are and how much someone was trying to charge me for it."

This is true for any medical treatment. You weigh up the costs, risks, benefits and then you decide if you want to go ahead with it.

There are also numerous examples of normal medicine cures that have been dreadfully harmful. Thalidomide and SSRIs to name a couple off the top of my head,

Citation provided.

You'd be crazy to only use alt med for cancer treatment, but as an addition studies have shown it to be effective.

analog··on It’s a part of my paleo fantasy, it’s a part of my paleo dream
Right, but if you've tried doctors and they haven't been able to help, and if you have heard of a treatment which anecdotally works, and has no reported side effects, then why wouldn't you try it.

If it works for you then you still have a sample size of one but this would be good enough.

3.5 years for accessing public urls and then forwarding the information on to a media organisation (yes I know it's Gawker, but still). Makes me wonder what Aaron would have got if he'd gone to trial.
analog··on It’s a part of my paleo fantasy, it’s a part of my paleo dream
I'm sorry but anecdotes are evidence, just with a very small sample size. You can keep saying "it doesn't work" as many times as you like but you'll still be wrong.
analog··on It’s a part of my paleo fantasy, it’s a part of my paleo dream
That's pretty unscientific, purely based on the opinions of a collection of individuals.

It also completely ignores the very personal nature of a diet. What's easy to follow for one person will be very difficult for another.

And if you're rating a diet for heart health I'd like to actually see the rates of heart related illnesses for those following the diets.

analog··on It’s a part of my paleo fantasy, it’s a part of my paleo dream
Well I know several people for whom the Paleo diet has worked, and also alt medicine. I don't know why it works but it's unscientific to ignore the evidence simply because you don't understand it.
analog··on It’s a part of my paleo fantasy, it’s a part of my paleo dream
Has anyone claimed that the Paleo diet is unhealthy? From what I've seen the only complaints against it are that the claimed reason for it's effectiveness are not well supported.

I don't have any studies but it certainly seems healthier than the high-carb, low-fat diet which was promoted by the medical establishment for so long.

analog··on It’s a part of my paleo fantasy, it’s a part of my paleo dream
If it works it's not unmitigated bullshit.

Number of people on the wait list is kinda significant. Call it a marketing list if you want and you'll realise there's definite value there.

It's fairly standard for big corps to outsource software development. They see software as a cost centre, and in some ways it is. Even at a loss of $5000 per day they may have still come out on top in the long run.

Edit: source, my brother has a senior position at one of the big four accountancy firms, they outsource a lot of dev work to India.

But what kind of software? Controlling an oil field is a little more critical than a CMS.
analog··on I want build Email service Website Like Gmail / Hotmail / Yahoo (for $500-$1000)
I'm not saying "they suck" at all. Just providing a piece of anecdata. So most of us on here work on the web and it would be standard for us to work with source control.

Software controlling an oil field is a step above the bog standard CRUD app that powers most of the web. I'm very surprised that such a mess up could happen, and so was my friend who was in charge of the project.

I'd be very surprised if that were true. BTC theft is problematic because the thieves don't get caught surely?

Exchange rate at time of payment is what I've always used when handling international transactions.
analog··on I want build Email service Website Like Gmail / Hotmail / Yahoo (for $500-$1000)
I heard a story from a friend who works in the oil industry. The Indian dev team had updated the software that controlled the oil flow from a field, but they'd introduced a bug that was losing $5000 (or barrels, memory fails me) a day somehow.

They couldn't roll back to the previous version because they weren't using version control for the software.

I've seen some balls ups from UK teams too fwiw, but nothing that approaches that level of wtf.

Roundcube would probably do the job. The problem is what if the guy says "but this doesn't have feature X that gmail has, add it or I won't pay you."

If you could change the spec to be "install roundcube" then maybe it wouldn't be such a bad deal, but then you're essentially doing the most important part of the work (telling him how to get what he wants) for free.

analog··on The Redhat of Drupal
There's no reason why Automattic shouldn't use Drupal if it's the right tool for a particular job. Drupal projects have used Wordpress in the past, Microsoft use Linux servers etc etc.

What do you think his offence was then? He had the right to access all of the articles he downloaded individually. You seem to be suggesting that he should be prosecuted because he might have distributed them.
