Firing him was just a logical consequence, since he didn't seem to do an awful lot of work.
You should be angry as hell and not thanking them.
If it was your fault, what do you expect to happen? If you travel by TGV in France and miss your train, your place is also gone and you have to buy a new ticket.
It's really cheap (but only on the price! :-)
And the advertised prices have 19% sales tax included, so it's even cheaper for companies :-)
I would never change my hosting company if I would be fully satisfied and I would only be saving 100$ a month.
In other countries, alone the fact that you are storing the content (without publishing it) is blatant theft.
You can't also steal something in a store, just because the store didn't tell you not to steal something!
And google has to obey to local laws and local copyrights and not just to US law.
The google book case is just another thing that's going to backfire at google. The ignorant attitude of google making foreign books (books written by authors where it is clearly illegal by the law do scan in the books and make those freely searchable on the net) available to all US citizens, even though the authors don't want their books to be available trough google, will only create more hate against google.
You must be a fool to believe that they don't own the pirate bay anymore, or are not associated with the keyman islands shell company running the company.
Alone mininova disclosed making > 1 million of profit a year, piratebay's profit must be much bigger, all from the copyrighted works of others.
Most of you wouldn't support piratebay anymore if your program/source code showed up there, except if it's opensource.
Besides, firing would definitely be a little harsh. Everybody deserves a 2nd chance.
He should fire his sysadmin for not checking the in/out network traffic...
I can still remember that I talked to one of the founder guys of directed edge at a party at the web 2.0 conference in Berlin last year, and he was like "ooh, you are one of the few here having an interesting project".
His project wasn't uninteresting as well ;). Good luck!
